My ex-coworker Sanja and her hubby Joe drove all the way to LA from Boston for a visit.  I miss her a great deal and couldn't wait to see her.  Couple of us from the old job got together to have a night out with Sanja and Joe.  Since Sanja was in the German department, we picked a German eatery for our gathering.  I've heard about the famous Red Lion Tavern and their beer garden.  I was really looking forward to seeing Sanja and have some delicious German food.

Chicken Soup ($3.75)

I went for the food, but everybody else went for the beer.  Claire and Bill already ate, so they just ordered a chicken soup to share.  I didn't taste it.  But they didn't finish the soup.

German Potato Salad ($3.00)

Sanja and Joe only ordered a German Potato Salad to share.  It came in a super small plate... like the size of a Asian dipping plate, and it was $3!  Both of them are vegetarian, and there was bacon in the potato salad.  So I ate it.  The biggest difference between American and German potato salad was the sourness.  I like both versions.

Beef Rouladen ($16.75)
Boiled Beef Rolls stuffed with pickles, onions and bacon. served with mashed potatoes with gravy, and red cabbage.

David and his Polish friend both ordered Beef Rouladen.  They said it was very good.  Both of them finished their plate really fast.

Red Lion Schnitzel ($16.25)
Pork Cutlet Breaded And Fried Golden Brown served with boiled potatoes and red cabbage.

I had no idea what to order.  The waitress suggested Red Lion Schnitzel, saying it's classic German food.  It was a huge piece of fried pork cutlet.  I only ate half of it and gave the rest to the boys to share.  I thought it was a little dry and oily, and didn't really like it that much.  The sour and sweet red cabbage was good.

That was all we ate, and the bill was so expensive.... from all the beer!

Honestly, the food was quite disappointing.  But I was very happy seeing my friends!  Hope we'll get together again soon.

  1. I've been addicted to your blog lately after finding it! Please update with more!

As for the Red Lion, the beef rouladen is good and for dessert the Apple Strudel is a MUST. it comes with a creamy hot or cold vanilla sauce.! Try it next time!

My Polish friends know their German food!
If I ever go back again, I'll be sure to order beef rouladen and apple strudel!
