[Monrovia] [Seafood] Red Lobster

Red Lobster

http://www.redlobster.com

I had midterms for 3 weeks straight.  Finally finished the last midterm on Tuesday night, and went to my parent's house early.  Dad went out for dinner with friends.  I happened to have a $10 off coupon for Red Lobster which expires in 2 days, and a $25 gift card also.  I asked mom if she would like to go to Red Lobster for dinner, and she was happy.

Cheddar Bay Biscuits

Red Lobster has the best Cheddar Bay Biscuits.  I found the recipe online.  I am really horrible at baking.  But this recipe looks simple enough.  Maybe I'll challenge myself and give it a try at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.

Labradors Are So Cute

Ginny is the Labrador our group worked with this week.  I caught her winking in this picture.  Too cute!

蛋花雞湯麵 Egg Drop Chicken Noodle Soup

After finishing eating the rotisserie chicken from Costco, I used the leftover bones to make a pot of chicken stock.  Simply add onion, celery, carrot, and water, simmer for 1~2 hours, then you will get a pot of tasty http://www.eileenlikestoeat.commade chicken stock.

蛋花雞湯麵 Egg Drop Chicken Noodle Soup

I made a bowl of Egg Drop Chicken Noodle Soup for Dr. P using the chicken stock when he came http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com working late that night.  Cook noodle in a pot.  I used soba noodle.  Beat 1 egg in a bowl.  Heat up the stock.  When the stock boils, turn down the heat.  Using one hand to pour the egg into the soup slowly, while stirring with chopsticks (or fork/spoon) using the other hand.  I had some chicken meat from the rotisserie chicken so I added that also.  Season with salt, white pepper, and sesame oil.  Then add the cooked noodle into the egg drop chicken soup.  Done!  Well.... I wish I had some cilantro in the fridge... it'll make the soup taste even better!

Very simple recipe.  Very hearty bowl of noodle soup.

[Irvine] [Chinese] A&J Restaurant

A&J Restaurant
半畝園

14805 Jeffrey Rd #D
Irvine, CA 92620
(949) 786-3585

We eat at A&J and get takeout from them all the time.  The food is cheap, and pretty good comparing to the other Irvine Chinese restaurant.

芽菜海帶 Seaweed & Bean Sprout in Garlic Vinegar Sauce ($1.95)

Seaweed & Bean Sprout is my favorite small dish/appetizer from A&J.  The garlic vinegar sauce is slightly sweet, slightly sour, and slightly spicy.

[Irvine] [Japanese] Takaraya (CLOSED)

Takaraya
5408 Walnut Ave #1
Irvine, CA 92604
(949) 654-1221
(CLOSED)

We go to the 99 Ranch Plaza on Walnut all the time.  Passed by Takaraya plenty of time, but never had the desire to go inside.  From the look of the restaurant, we thought it was your typical teriyaki bowl kind of Japanese fast food restaurant.  Maybe the owner isn't even Japanese.  One night as we were leaving Tapioca Express next door, I saw an old Asian guy wearing apron and chef hat sweeping the floor inside Takaraya, and a young girl was leaving.  As the girl opened the door, I heard the girl saying goodbye to the guy in Japanese, and the old man said, "arigato xxxxxxx" and bowed.  I assumed the man is the owner/cook, and the girl is the waitress.  The man probably said something like "thank you for the help today."  But what surprised me was the bow.  Seemed like the owner really appreciate his employee.  Also he didn't make the waitress do the clean-up like most restaurants do, but he was doing it himself.  So I was wrong.  The place IS owned by Japanese.  And with a nice owner like that, now I really want to try this restaurant.

We came early, around 5ish.  The restaurant was empty.  But by 6:00pm, the restaurant was completely full, with most of the customers being Japanese.  We placed order at the counter, and picked up our food when it was ready.  No tip needed at this restaurant.  They also have a lot of Japanese manga and magazine for customers to read.

[Irvine] [Thai] Thai & Chinese Express

Thai & Chinese Express
2540 Main St #J
Irvine, CA 92614
(949) 724-1813

I brought http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com a 2-items lunch combo from Thai & Chinese Express once before.  Dr. P loved it.  Since then he had gone back a few times to pick up the combo meal to bring to work.  One night I was feeling lazy and asked Dr. P to bring some food on his way back http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com from work.  When Dr. P suggested Thai & Chinese Express, I immediately said, "YES! Pad Thai!!"

Pad Thai w/ Chicken ($6.25)

I had a sudden craving for Pad Thai for some reason.  Dr. P didn't like pad thai.  He said pad thai always tastes too sweet for him.  I ate the pad thai, and couldn't stop eating it.  It wasn't all that sweet at all.  It was savory with just a little bit of sweetness, spicy, and a little sour from lime juice.  It was a very very good pad thai.  At first Dr. P didn't even want to try it.  But I insisted that he needed to try a few bites.  He ended up loving it, too.

Instant Dukbokki (Spicy Korean Rice Cake)

While grocery shopping at H-Mart, a Korean supermarket, I tried some spicy Korean rice cake from the food demo girl. I liked it, and picked up one to make at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com for Dr. P.

The instant dukbokki needs to be refrigerated.  One bag is more than enough for 2 people.  Each bag is $3.99.

[Tustin] [Supermarket] Whole Foods Market

Whole Foods Market

Tustin, CA 92782 USA
(714) 566-7650
http://www.wholefoods.com

Dr. P went to Whole Foods Market one day for lunch while I was in school.  He texted me while eating, raving about how good their Hunan Spicy Noodle is.  I gotta try it for myself.

Spicy Hunan Chicken Noodle ($6.60)

We went a little bit late.  They only offered takeout order at that time.  Fine.  We'll just take it for to-go.  Spicy Hunan Chicken Noodle was made with grilled chicken, bok choy, bean sprout, cilantro, and jalapeno.  The soup base was tasty.  Dr. P said the portion seemed bigger when he ate over there though.

Amputated Kitty

We did an amputation surgery in class on Tuesday.  This poor kitty was born with a defect.  His left front leg was twisted inward and very rigid.  He couldn't use the leg to do anything.  And since his elbow is sticking out, it rubbed on the ground or bumped into things.  The would actually would cause more problems such as infection.  This poor kitty was abandoned.  Our teacher, who is also a vet, found a friend that adopted the kitty.  His name is Handy..... kinda funny and cute!  Watching the amputation surgery was.... uh.... scary but eyeopening.  I am sure Handy will do well in recovery, and he will have a happy normal life as a 3 legs cat.  Isn't he adorable?

[Walnut] [Supermarket] Fresh & Easy

Fresh & Easy

http://www.freshandeasy.com

I was tired of eating fattening food from Carl's Jr. in school.  I left for school a bit earlier on Tuesday, and stopped by at Fresh & Easy to pick up a healthier lunch.

Primary Greens Smoothie (3.49) / Veggie Hummus Wrap ($2.99)

When my vet teacher saw Primary Greens Smoothie on my desk, he said, "I know it's supposed to be healthy for you, but it looks like cow stomach contents for me."  haha....  This smoothie was made of celery, cucumber, kale, parseley, and spinach.  It tasted liked vegetables, and pretty good.

[Tustin] [Japanese] Tommy's Sushi & Japanese Restaurant

Tommy's Sushi & Japanese Restaurant
1051 E Main St
Tustin, CA 92780
(714) 544-5241

Woohoo~~~~  Tommy's Sushi night!  We miss Hide Sushi in WLA so much.  We're so glad we have a place like Tommy's Sushi in Orange County to serve our sushi craving.

Poki Salad ($8.50)

We ordered the same thing as we did before so I didn't take pictures.  The only item that we didn't try before was the Poki Salad.  Poki salad is pretty much Poki bowl without the rice.  It's perfect for me because I am trying to cut down my carb intake.  The salad didn't come with avocado and crab salad like the bowl did though.  I thought there would be lettuce, but instead of lettuce, the salad was just thin strips of daikon radish.  I ate half, and put the other half on Dr. P's rice that came with his combo dinner to make his own poki bowl.

After dinner, we went to Yogurtland in Tustin.  Remember those free water machines with strawberry that Yogurtland has?  That particular Yogurtland had MOLDY STRAWBERRY IN THE WATER!!!!  It was so disgusting!  Good I didn't see anyone trying to get the water while we were there.  I don't understand why they would put strawberry in their water.  It didn't make the water taste like strawberry, and strawberry goes bad and gets moldy pretty easily.  Why don't they just put lemon in the water?  And if they want to use strawberry, at least change the fruit everyday.  We will never go to the Tustin store again.  Remember to check the water before drinking at Yogurtland!

[Costa Mesa] [Moroccan] Marrakesh Restaurants

Marrakesh Restaurant
1976 Newport Blvd
Costa Mesa, CA 92627
(949) 645-8384
http://www.marrakeshdining.com

I've been to Marrakesh Restaurant once a long long time ago for a friend's birthday.  I wrote a post on my blog about it back in 2005.  I remember the food was delicious.  So when I saw Marrakesh on restaurant.com, I bought a $25 gift certificate right away. After a fun afternoon at Pet Expo, we headed to Mrrakesh for an exotic Moroccan dinner date.

We came for an early dinner around 5:30pm.  We just self parked at their parking lot.  When we left around 7:30pm, we noticed by then it was valet parking only.

Pet Expo

We went to Pet Expo in Costa Mesa on Saturday. It was such a fun event! It was our first time, and we think we'll go every year from now on. There were so many animals to see, cows, pigs, horses, dogs, cats, reptiles, snake, birds, rabbit, rodents, fish, llama, and even some wild animals. I only took pictures for the first two hour or so. Then the rest of the time I just want to enjoy the fun and stopped taking pictures.

Those two llamas are so funny looking (but still very cute) because they have messed up teeth.  I've never seen any other llama with teeth like that.  I wonder if other llama think they are not as good looking.  haha....

[Irvine] [Dessert] Mochilato

Mochilato
14310 Culver Dr #E
Irvine, CA 92604
(949) 559-1116

I took mom and sister to Shabu Shabu Bar for dinner.  Didn't take pictures because I wrote about it before.  Shabu Shabu Bar is my favorite shabu shabu restaurant, but mom and sister thought it was just a typical shabu shabu restaurant.  They also thought this was something they could easily make at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.  Hmmm.... next time they come visit, I'll take them to a more unique restaurant.  Oh well.  After dinner, I asked them if they would like to go to Yogurtland for dessert, or try this shaved ice place called Mochilato.  We all agreed that we want to try something new.

The front part of the store is the seating area.  We walked to the back of the store to place our order.

[Costa Mesa] [American] Lawry's Carvery

Lawry's Carvery
3333 Bristol St #2601
Costa Mesa, CA 92626
(714) 434-7788
http://www.lawrysonline.com/carvery_gen_info.asp

After a somewhat disappointed dinner, as we were strolling around South Coast Plaza, we saw Lawry's Carvery.  Lunch #2?  Why not?

We haven't been to Lawry's in Beverly Hills for the longest time.  Lawry's Carvery is like a fast food version of Lawry's. You place the order at the counter, pay, get a number, find a seat, and a server will bring the food to your table.

[Costa Mesa] [French] Marche Moderne

Marche Moderne
3333 Bristol St #3001
Costa Mesa, CA 92626
(714) 434-7900
http://www.marchemoderne.net

Mom and sister came to Orange County to visit me on Friday.  Since mom likes French food, and I've always wanted to try Marche Moderne's $20 prix fixe lunch, our lunch destination was decided.  Plus we could shop at South Coast Plaza afterward.  One stone kills two birds!

Marche Moderne is on the 3rd floor near Nordstrom.  The restaurant wasn't that big.  Indoor seats seemed crowded.  Personally I don't like it when table and table are so close together.

South Beach Diet.... Again

I tried South Beach a few years back, and lost 7 pounds in 5 days.  For the first two weeks of the plan, there is absolutely no sugar and no carb in the diet.  Even though the weight did came off, I had no energy at all without carb.  So I stopped the diet after 5 days.  Now I am desperately to see the number goes down on the scale, and decide to try South Beach diet again.... well, sort of.  I am not super strict about not having any carb.  If I feel low energy, then I cheat by having fruit or a cracker.  And I still eat everything when I dine out, but I'll control the amount of carb that I eat.  The recipes in the South Beach diet book are actually quite good.  This was what I ate for 3 meals in day 1.

Quiche

Quiche for breakfast.  It was made with egg substitute, spinach, onion, green bell pepper, and mozzarella cheese.  I like this veggie cheese quiche a lot.  For Dr. P, I made veggie egg breakfast burrito for him using the quiche.  He liked it, too.

[Irvine] [Korean] Juju Pocha

Juju Pocha
14775 Jeffrey Rd, #B
Irvine, CA 92618
(949) 786-2412

We saw a flyer with coupons at a boba place for this new Korean restaurant, Juju Pocha.  The pictures on the flyer looked good.  We gave it a try on our date night this week.

This restaurant is in the A&J plaza, but off to the side where Wienerschnitzel is.  I think this place used to be another Korean restaurant.

6362 E Santa Ana Canyon Rd
Anaheim, CA 92807
(714) 685-1103
http://www.slaters5050.com

We came to Slater's 50/50 Burgers with a $20 Groupon.  I read all about this burger place when I first moved down to Orange County.  People rave about their 50% beef 50% bacon burger.  When I saw the groupon deal, I bought the $20 certificate for $10 without any hesitation.

There was a GT-R parked right in front of the restaurant when we arrived.  We saw a few people admiring the car.  I don't know much about cars.  Personally I thought this car was alright.  I just noticed the rim was huge and really shining.  Dr. P told me it's a pretty rare and expensive car.  So there... this photo is for you car people out there.  haha....  (Oh wait... I've seen the same car before!)

[Santa Ana] [Vietnamese] Cay Dua Restaurant

Cay Dua Restaurant
3522 W 1st St
Santa Ana, CA 92703
(714) 839-7799

Our original plan was going to Shabu Shabu Bar for lunch yesterday.  When we got there, we found out that they are closed on Sunday.  Where to eat now?  It was cold, and we were totally in the mood for hot pot.  We thought about going to California Shabu Shabu.  But then I remember seeing this Vietnamese restaurant called Cay Dua last time we went to Siam Taste of Asia.  We saw a lot people eating some sort of Vietnamese hot pot through the window.  Since we are already in Santa Ana, why not try something different?

Cay Dua is right next door to Siam Taste of Asia, which is located in the Hispanic parts of Santa Ana.

[Glendale] [Bakery] Porto's Bakery

Porto's Bakery
315 N. Brand Blvd.
Glendale, CA 91203
(818) 956-5996
http://www.portosbakery.com

My sister woke up at 6:30am to go to Porto's Bakery to get a birthday cake for my brother's birthday.  What a nice sister!  ^^  She went that early to avoid the long line.  But she said there were still a lot of people when she got there at 7am.

Meringue Fruit Torte
Yellow sponge cake soaked in a light brandy syrup with a layer of custard and peaches. Finished with torched meringue (old-fashioned boil icing) and decorated with an assortment of fresh fruits.

Meringue Fruit Torte was DELICIOUS!  The cake was so moist.  Lots and lots of fruit.  Meringue was creamy and not overly sweet.  My sister cut me a huge piece.  I thought it was too much, but then ended up finishing everything and wanted even more.

[Monterey Park] [Chinese] 避風塘潮粵海鮮酒家 Seafood Village Restaurant

Seafood Village Restaurant
避風塘潮粵海鮮酒家

684 W Garvey Ave
Monterey Park, CA 91754
(626) 289-0088

Yesterday was my brother's birthday.  We went to Seafood Village to have "crabby" lunch to celebrate.  haha....

避風塘特式炒蟹 House Special Crab ($8.99/lb) ($26.97)

House Special Crab is always tasty.  But the price has increased!  In December, it was $4.99/lb.  In February, it was $5.99/lb.  Now in April, it's $8.99/lb.  I guess it's cheaper to eat crab in winter.  My brother really likes the garlicky crab.  We finished all 3 lbs of it.

[Anaheim] [Italian] Anaheim White House Restaurant

Anaheim White House Restaurant
887 S Anaheim Blvd
Anaheim, CA 92805
(714) 772-1381
http://www.anaheimwhitehouse.com

I have so many restaurant gift certificate from Restaurants.com and Groupon.  For our weekday date night, Dr. P and I played our "restaurant" version of deal or no deal by putting a number on each gift certificate.  It was very nerdy, but fun.  haha....  Anyway, we ended up with a $25 gift certificate fro Anaheim White House.  Deal!

We made a reservation for 7pm.  The restaurant definitely stood out in this neighborhood.  It is valet parking only.  But we parked on our own on the side residential street, and probably saved $10 by doing so.

[Irvine] [Thai] Thai & Chinese Express

Thai & Chinese Express
2540 Main St #J
Irvine, CA 92614
(949) 724-1813

When I moved down to Irvine, I did a search online for cheap eats in the city.  While driving http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com from school, I remembered Thai & Chinese Express from my research.  This place is inside a food court on Main Street near all the corporate offices.  I stopped by to get to-go lunch on my way http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.

2 Item Combo ($5.99)

This place is your usual 1, 2 or 3 item combo fast food kind of place.  You can see all the food on the counter.  They offer both Thai food and Chinese food.  I was more interested in their Thai food.  I picked green curry chicken and mixed vegetable & tofu.  I could also pick fried rice or noodle with the combo, but I thought the curry goes best with white rice.  The nice lady asked me if I would like to have some curry sauce on my rice.  Of course!  She really packed on the food.  I love their slightly spicy green curry chicken.  Dr. P already ate lunch.  He said he just wanted a bite to taste the food, but then he couldn't stop eating.  The vegetable mix was pretty good, too.

The portion was huge.  This box was enough for 2 full meals for both of us.  This is great cheap eat find in Irvine!

Carl's Jr.
1100 N Grand Ave
Walnut, CA 91789
(909) 594-5611 #2909
http://www.carlsjr.com

It was a very long surgery day at school, which means a quick lunch at Carl's Jr.... again.  Why don't we have more choices on campus?

Bacon Swiss Crispy Chicken Sandwich ($4.59)

I used the throw Carl's Jr's coupons away when I get them in the mail.  Now I look forward to the bi-weekly coupons from them.  I bought a Bacon Swiss Crispy Chicken Sandwich with a $1.00 off coupon.  This chicken sandwich has about 770 calories, which kept me full for the entire day.

[Irvine] [Chinese] Chong Qing Mei Wei Szechwan Restaurant

Chong Qing Mei Wei Szechwan Restaurant
重慶美味川菜

5406 Walnut Ave #C
Irvine, CA 92618
(949) 651-8886

We haven't been to Chong Qing Mei Wei for a while.  We went for a late lunch yesterday, and had some delicious Chinese spicy food with a side of.... earthquake!

風味冷菜 Cold Appetizer ($5.50)

When we arrived the restaurant, the employees were having their lunch, but a waiter got up and served us with a big smile.  We felt a little guilty for interrupting him from his little lunch break and apologized, but he said he didn't mind at all.  We ordered our usual 3 items cold appetizer.  This time we got spicy kidney, potatoes, and smoked chicken.  Everything tasted great, but I noticed that portion was smaller this time.

[Costa Mesa] [Japanese] California Shabu-Shabu

California Shabu-Shabu
801 Baker Street #A
Costa Mesa, CA 92626
(714) 540-1888
http://www.californiashabushabu.com

We have been to California Shabu Shabu in Fountain Valley a few times.  Then we found out they have a location in Costa Mesa, which is even closer to us.  Also we have been going to shabu shabu for lunch instead of dinner.  Portion is about the same, and the price is much cheaper for lunch.  Yesterday Dr. P was craving for shabu shabu again.  So we went to try California Shabu Shabu at this new location.

This California Shabu Shabu looked new and modern.  It's right next to Shark Club!  I remember I came to this club once when I was really young.  Now I found it again, and it's still the same Shark Club!

[Garden Grove] [Vietnamese] Lua Bistrot

Lua Bistrot
9892 Westminster Ave
Garden Grove, CA 92844
(714) 839-8338

I found Lua Bistrot from Monster Muching's blog.  What?  Steak & Egg is only $8.95?  And the steak picture looked so good.  I bookmarked the page immediately.  Dr. P got paid on April 1st and took me for our weekday date night.  I didn't want him to spend too much money right in the beginning of the month.  How about $8.95 Steak & Egg?  Perfect!

Lua Bistrot is located in a big Vietnamese plaza with a 99 cents store.  They are definitely the fanciest and most modern looking place in the plaza.  Don't let the fanciness fool you.  Their price is more than reasonable.

City of Industry, CA 91748
(626) 965-1388
http://www.jjbakeryusa.com

My mom heard about J.J. Bakery's lunch bento from her friends.  We went to the Rowland Heights location first, and found out that they only have bento between 11am to 2pm.  They told us that we should go to City of Industry location for more food.  That store was only a few minutes away from Rowland Heights location.  It seemed very new.  One side was bakery, and the other side was Taiwanese restaurant.

招牌排骨飯 Specialty Pork Chop Rice ($7.25)

I ordered two bentos to bring http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com, and Mom & sister also bought two to bring http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.  To-go orders are 10% off, which was nice.  Specialty Pork Chop Rice is their most popular item.  The pork chop was oily, but pretty good.  Dr. P loved it.  I like their bamboo shoots a lot.

[Rowland Heights] [Japanese] Niko Niko Sushi

Niko Niko Sushi
19705 Colima Rd #9
Rowland Heights, CA 91748
(909) 598-7299

Alice in Wonderland is a wonderful movie.  I love all of Alice's dresses.  haha....  After the movie, we went o Niko Niko Sushi for a late lunch.  We went because my sister bought a $25 gift certificate from Restaurant.com.  We really had no idea if the restaurant is good or not, and exploring and trying new restaurant is always fun.

Niko Niko Sushi is inside a huge shopping plaza.  There is a Yogurtland and a Starbucks right there.  Perfect for afternoon snack after lunch.  (I was already thinking about what to eat after lunch BEFORE actually eating lunch. haha....)

Si Hai (Four Sea) Restaurant
四海豆漿

708 E Las Tunas Dr
San Gabriel, CA 91776
(626) 285-8369

Wednesday was a school holiday, Cesar Chavez day.  So my sister and I planned to take my mom to go see Alice in Wonderland, and eat out all day long.  Mom always does yoga in the morning.  So sister and I went to Si Hai (Four Sea) Restaurant for some Taiwanese breakfast, then brought some http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com for parents.

The restaurant is big and bright.  It was spacious, and the seats were comfortable.

[Irvine] [Seafood] California Fish Grill

California Fish Grill
3988 Barranca Parkway
Irvine, CA 92606
(949) 654-3838
http://www.cafishgrill.com

It was the end of the month, so we were tight on budget.  We wanted cheap eats, but forget about unhealthy fast food.  What about seafood?  Cheap and tasty fish!  We heard good things about California Fish Grill.  So off we went.

California Fish Grill is a semi-fast food type of restaurant.  You place the order at the counter, pay, grab a number stand, and someone will bring the food to your table when it's ready.  The deco has a "pub" feel to it.  Atmosphere was very lively.

[Fountain Valley] [BBQ] 成吉思漢 Genghis Khan Mongolian BBQ

Genghis Khan Mongolian BBQ
成吉思漢

18900 Brookhurst St
Fountain Valley, CA 92708
(714) 968-4027

I don't know why, but all of a sudden we both had craving for Mongolian BBQ.  We remember passing by Genghis Khan Mongolian BBQ when we visited California Shabu Shabu before.  That restaurant seemed to have pretty good business.  Let's go give it a try.

Genghis Khan Mongolian BBQ didn't have any window so we couldn't see the inside at all.

Drunk Dog... Yes She's Really Drunk

I went into the hospital where I am working as an intern this semester, and saw this dog in the kennel.

I thought the dog looks funny and asked the doctor, "What's wrong with this dog?  She looks like she is drunk."  The doctor answered, "She IS drunk!"  What?!?!?!  Seriously?
