We didn't know south Orange County too well. I'm so glad there's this thing called the internet nowadays. We were thinking about having Japanese food. After a quick search online, we found out that there are a lot of all you can eat Japanese restaurants in south Orange County. We picked Sushi Tomo to try because it has high reviews on Yelp. People said that the fish on sushi is fresh and big, and they don't give you too much rice. I like that.
It's not a big restaurant. I read that there's always a wait on weekend night. We went on Saturday for lunch. The price was $24.95 per person for all you can eat. But people can always order a la carte if they choose.
Hot Sake (Large) ($6.95)
Dr. P always wants to have sushi with hot sake.
Miso Soup ($1.50)
And he always has to have a bowl of miso soup, too. (I have included the a la carte price for reference.)
Fried Oyster ($4.95)
Fried oyster was crunchy and hot, with soft and juicy oyster inside, and dipped with spicy sriracha sauce.
Baked Mussels ($5.99)
I like how the baked mussels didn't have tons of mayonnaise on it. It tasted very fresh.
B.L.S.R. Roll ($10.95)
Crab, avocado, cucumber / baked lobster
We started the meal with some rolls. B.L.S.R. Roll was pretty much baked lobster on top of California rolls. Portion was huge! They sure gave you a lot of lobster.
Scallop Tempura Roll ($10.95)
Crab, avocado, cucumber / scallop tempura
Scallop Tempura Roll was very similar to B.L.S.R. Roll. But instead of baked lobster, it was scallop tempura on top of California rolls. The scallop tempura was crunchy and yummy. But after two big plates of rolls, we were already half full. Next time, I think we'll just order one of those rolls.
Yellow Tail (Hamachi) Sushi ($3.25) / Salmon (Sake) Sushi ($2.95) / Albacore (Shiromaguro) Sushi ($2.95) / Tuna (Maguro) Sushi ($3.25)
A plate of fresh sushi. Yallow tail, salmon, albacore, and tuna. The Yelpers were right. They really gave us big pieces of fish with very little rice.
Oishi Roll ($8.95)
Spicy tuna, salmon, avocado, crab / cucumber
Oishi Roll was my favorite roll. Love the crunchy cucumber wrapped roll. So refreshing. I heard another group of people ordered Oishi Roll without crab. When I was eating it, I also thought the imitation crab was a bit much. Next time I'll do the same, order Oishi Roll without the crab.
Fatty Tuna (Toro) Sushi ($5.95)
While we were eating, we heard the waitress lady (also the owner?) talking to the sushi chefs in Korean. Ahhh, so it is a Korean owned place. I kept on telling Dr. P to say something to them in Korean. Service was good, but I think they would be even nicer to us if they found out Dr. P is half Korean. So he finally did, and see what we got? They gave us Fatty Tuna (Toro) sushi, which isn't on the AYCE menu!
Spicy Tuna Hand Roll ($3.25)
Just look how much fish they gave us in the Spicy Tuna Hand Roll! Yum!
Udon ($5.95)
If you want to get your money worth for AYCE, do not order udon like I did. haha.... But I was really craving for a bowl of udon the entire time after I saw it on the menu. I couldn't resist. Gotta have a bowl. The plain noodle was exactly what I wanted, hot, chewy, and tasty.
Mackerel (Saba) Sushi ($3.25) / Octopus (Tako) Sushi ($3.50) / Yellow Tail (Hamachi) Sushi ($3.25) / Avocado Ball
Our last plate of sushi, mackerel, octopus, and more yellow tail. The sushi chef threw in something special. It was an avocado ball!
Avocado Ball
Inside the avocado ball were tuna and more crab. I had just about enough crab by then, and thought this was nice, but too much.
We like Tomo Sushi. It's not your traditional Japanese joint, but the rolls were good, sushi was fresh, and service was great. I would love to visit with big group of friends one day so we can order a variety of rolls to try.

Is it comparable to California Beach? I love California Beach but I live in Lake Forest. My friend told me it's fish is not that fresh. I have a Korean Bf...can't wait to use him :)
ReplyDeleteI like California Beach, too.
Actually I think the sushi and rolls taste different at those two places.
Both are pretty good. You just have to try for yourself to see which one you like better.
Plus you can put your Korean boyfriend to use. haha....
