I'm on a quest to find more Taiwanese restaurants in Orange County.  And I found Bong Bong Noodles!  I never expect there to be a Taiwanese restaurant in Huntington Beach.  I don't think there are too many Asians living around that area.

There's no mention of Taiwanese food at all from outside of the restaurant.  There's not even any Chinese writing.  If I pass by this place, I probably would think it's one of those Americanized Chinese fast food place.  But guess what?  It's actually an authentic Taiwanese restaurant owned by a Taiwanese chef.  Who would've guessed from the look of it?

They have a small menu.  I actually like that.  Their specialty, obviously, is been noodle soup.  The owner told us that he had a beef noodle soup restaurant in Taiwan for 20 years.  We noticed majority of their customers are non-Asians.  They like to order fried rice, wonton noodle soup, and dumplings.  But we are there for traditional Taiwanese beef noodle soup and pork chop rice.

This place was run in a fast food style.  You place the order at the counter, pay first, and find a seat.  When the food is ready, the counter girl/waitress will bring it to your table.  So no tips necessary.  Most people don't leave tips.  But we felt bad for the friendly counter girl and left her proper tips.  Anyway, so while we were waiting for our food, we got two cups of iced water.  They look like your normal iced water.

But once you put a color straw in the iced water, the water changed color!  Wow!  Look, now we have green water and blue water!!  haha....  We were two dorks and spent a good 10 minutes playing with straws and iced water.

半肉半筋湯麵 Spicy Beef/Tendon Noodle Soup ($6.00)

The broth for Spicy Beef/Tendon Noodle Soup looked soooooo good!  It was not as spicy as it looked.  Well, it was definitely spicy, but still within people's comfort level of eating the soup.  The beef and tendon were super tender and soft.  We love the flavor, too.  We picked normal thin noodle this time.  The owner told us to try their handmade thick noodle next time.  He said it's better than the thin noodle.  I also like how they have a self-served counter full of cilantro, green onion, and pickled vegetables.  I like to add bunch of those things into the beef noodle soup.

排骨飯 Pork Chop with Rice ($6.00)

Pork Chop with Rice was pretty good, too.  The pork chop tasted very authentic and tender.  The only thing I think they should improve on is the side dishes.  The green veggie was good, but it was so plain.  I would like it even more if they had one or two variety of side dishes with the pork chop rice.

鹵蛋 Flavored Eggs ($2.00)

We also ordered some appetizers.  But they came after the main course?  Hmmm....  Flavored Eggs was sure flavorful.  I like.

豬耳朵 Pork Ears ($2.00)

Pork Ears were crunchy and yummy.  A beer would be good with it.

紅油炒手 Wontons in Spicy Oil Sauce ($5.00)

Wontons in Spicy Oil Sauce was the only dish we didn't like.  First, it took such a long time.  It came out when we already finished all the food.  The wontons tasted like they were overcooked.  The skin was mushy.  The spicy oil sauce didn't taste that good to us.  I probably won't order this again.

We like the beef noodle soup and pork chop rice at Bong Bong Noodle a lot.  Definitely will return again.  It's good to find more Taiwanese options in Orange County.  Does anybody knows any good Taiwanese restaurants other than the ones in Irvine?  We already tried all the Taiwanese eateries in Irvine.

  2. I want to know of more Taiwanese places in Orange County too! I recently went to Mama Liang's cuisine in Irvine, and was disappointed. I had tried another one of the Liang's chain in the Bay Area, and it was really good. The one in Irvine was too salty, though they have good hand pulled noodles.

We just had Mama Liang's from Irvine last night.
We got a to-go order of beef noodle soup and pork chop rice.
Pork chop rice was good, but beef noodle soup was very disappointing.
We need more Taiwanese restaurants in OC!

  3. What a hidden gem and quite an alternative from A&J. Thanks for the post.

It's always good to have alternatives and competitions.
The restaurants will try to get better (I hope), and us consumers have more choices.

  4. I wish here have a 刀削牛肉麵....
I miss this type of beef noodle a lot..

The owner told me they have handmade thick noodle.
I'm not sure if it's the "dough cut", but thick noodle is similar to 刀削牛肉麵. haha...

  6. Thanks so much for going here and posting so many photos. I live in HB and was curious about this eatery (it used to be a Vietnamese restaurant---but didn't stay in business long). I will stick with the spicy beef noodle soup (I wonder if they would let me order extra noodles after I eat what is in the bowl and have broth left over? Some pho places that I go to only charge $1 and I leave very filled up).

You can order a large bowl for $1 more.
Yeah if they let you add more noodle to the broth, that would be awesome.
Let me know if you try it and if they'll let you.
