We were in the mood for Japanese, but didn't want to go too far away. Our house is about 5 minutes away from Aliso Viejo Town Center. We decided to give Kanpai Sushi in the Town Center a try. If we like it, then sushi is only 5 minutes away.
Kanpai Sushi is a small place. The two sushi chefs looked like they are Japanese. The rest of the waitstaff are all Hispanics.
Miso Soup ($1.75)
As always, Dr. P always starts his Japanese meal with a bowl of miso soup.
Spicy Tuna Roll ($7.00) / Albacore Sushi ($3.95)
Spicy Tuna Roll was just alright. It wasn't bad, but nothing too special about it. Albacore sushi, on the other hand, was very good. The fish tasted really fresh.
Poki Bowl ($11.00)
Poki Bowl had tuna, salmon, and albacore. There were also crab, and cucumber on top of sushi rice. It wasn't too bad, but it definitely wasn't as good as the one from Tommy's Sushi. There was something about the sauce they used didn't make it quite right. Also I hope there was avocado in the Poki Bowl.
Saporro Draft ($3.50)
At first, Dr. P was like "Let's not order drinks to save money." After the Poki bowl, he couldn't take it anymore. He said he HAD to have cold beer to go with it. He ordered Saporro Draft. Icy cold and very refreshing.
Baked Dynamite Scallop ($10.00)
Baked Dynamite Scallop was not exactly what we expected. I was expecting the kind with tons of mayonnaise on top and baked. But their version had scallop with mayo on the buttom, and imitation crab on top, drizzeled with tons of some kind of sweet sauce. The sauce tasted like the kind they use with Eel Rice. The Dynamite still tasted pretty good with rice. But it just wasn't what we were hoping for.
Yellowtail Cheek ($9.50)
Grilled Yellowtail Cheek was super delish! It was very meaty and juicy. Grilled and seasoned perfectly. We weren't exactly too impress with the food. But after having the Yellowtail Cheek, Dr. P said he'd come back anytime for the Yellowtail Cheek.
Kanpai Sushi was alright. We like the albacore sushi and yellowtail cheek. But everything else wasn't very memorable. To be honest, we rather drive a little further for Japanese next time.

Hi Eileen,
ReplyDeleteI'll be hanging out in OC this weekend and the next due to my niece's golf tournament at Alison Creek Golf and Tustin Ranch Golf. Do you have any recommendation for goof food around there?
Nana San in Newport Beach is really good.
Also I LOVE K'Ya Bistro in Laguna Beach.
Thank you...
