Fish 'n' Chips

I haven't cooked for so long, and really miss it. I have been really busy with school stuff since it was the end of the semester. Lots of lab notebooks due, have to study for lab final and written final, paperwork needs to be done for graduation, preparing for the seminar class before taking the state board exam.... etc. Not to mention that I still have a wedding to plan, which is coming up in 2 1/2 month! I am stressed just thinking about all those things. But somehow cooking relaxes me. I really wanted to cook, but didn't have that much time. So I found a Rachael Ray's 30 minutes Fish 'n' Chips recipe.  Perfect!

Fish 'n' Chips

Here is the recipe with my modification:

Dr. P's brother came down to OC to take care of some "business" with Dr. P.  After they are done with everything and came back to Irvine, it was already almost 10pm.  We were starving!  They wanted fast food, but I didn't.  I suggested to go to Chili's for their $20 for 2 special, but only found out that they no longer offered the special when we got there.  So we headed over to China garden Seafood for some late night Chinese.  But.... right when we got to that plaza, we saw the Korean BBQ place Shik Do Rak was still full of people.  We changed our mind and decided to have all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ, but when the waitress was about to sit us, she said that we only have 30 minutes to eat because they close at 10:30pm.  And they didn't mean stopping serving food at 10:30pm.  She said we have to leave the restaurant at 10:30pm.  Hmmm....  So we changed our mind back to Chinese food.

明爐火鴉-半隻 Roasted Duck-Half ($7.99)

Roasted Duck was really tasty.  The duck wasn't very meaty though.

Take Your Pet for X-Ray Day

It was "take your pet for X-Ray day" in my radiology class. Some classmates brought very interesting / cute pets to class that day.

A girl had a giant tortoise for pet.  Tortoise is probably the only pet that would outlive its owner.  Maybe they think we are their pets in a way?  haha....

[Irvine] [Chinese] Spicy City

Spicy City
雲川園

Dr. P's cousin-in-law is a real estate agent.  He took an afternoon to show us some houses around the area for us to get an idea about the housing market right now.  It was so nice of him to do that for us.  We wanted to treat him to dinner.  So I thought, Koreans like spicy food, so why not take him to try Chinese spicy food?

風味涼菜 Cold Table Appetizers ($5.50)

We started the meal with 3 items cold appetizer combo.  There were green veggie, spicy beef, and seaweed.  The nice waitress also gave us a bit of the tofu noodle to sample.  Everything was tasty.  But....  This turned out to be our favorite item of the night.

[Tustin] [Indian] Haveli Fine Indian Cuisine

Haveli Fine Indian Cuisine
13882 Newport Ave # G
Tustin, CA 92780-4666
(714) 669-1011
http://www.havelifineindiancuisine.com

Back to Haveli Fine Indian Cuisine for our Indian buffet fix.  We had a coupon for $6.99/person lunch buffet.  The restaurant was super busy on a Monday.  I've never seen that many people at the restaurant.

Lunch Buffet ($6.99/person)

There were mostly vegetarian dishes for lunch buffet, which we didn't mind.  One of my favorite vegetarian Indian dishes is spinach.  Haveli usually does a great job making the spinach dish, but on that day it was burnt.  The spinach tasted bitter with a burnt flavor.  Nothing really stood out form this plate.  Even the chicken tikka masala wasn't that good that day.  The fried rice was made with some pickled vegetables, and it tasted really sour.  I wasn't exactly a fan of sour fried rice.  The only thing I liked was probably the corn.

Our lease for the apartment is up in July.  I like our apartment in Irvine.  The only thing I don't like is that they do not allow dogs.  You all know how much I love animals.  Dr. P is allergic to cats, so we've been wanting to have a dog (or two, even three?) so bad.  We decided to go down to San Clemente to see some places on Sunday.  Dr. P goes to San Clemente to surf all the time, and he really likes the beach vibe at this small town.  But before we go see houses, we gotta fill our stomach first.

I did a quick search on the internet, and found most of the eateries in San Clemente are Mexican fast food or pizza places.  Then I found Hapa J's, a Hawaiian restaurant.  From the pictures on their website, it looks like a nice sit-down restaurant.  Yup, we are going there for lunch!

[Lake Forest] [Japanese] Sushi Wazen

Sushi Wazen
22641 Lake Forest Dr
Lake Forest, CA 92630
(949) 855-8330

We haven't been back to Sushi Wazen for a few months.  I kinda miss it.  When I asked Dr. P if he would like to go there for dinner on Saturday, he said yes immediately.

Chef Nobu san is still nice, funny, and friendly.  But I think he lost a lot of weight.  He insisted it was because he was wearing glasses that day, and the glasses made him look skinner.

[Tustin] [Fast Food] Chick-Fil-A

Chick-Fil-A

Tustin, CA 92782-2711
(714) 258-1400
http://www.chick-fil-a.com

After lunch at Whole Foods, since Chick-Fil-A is right next door, I all of a sudden got the urge for some of their delicious Chicken Strips.  I LOVE Chick-Fil-A chicken strips.  So tender and flavorful!

Chick-Fil-A Nuggets (12) ($4.45)

But then as we were going through drive-thru, I changed my mind.  I've never tried their chicken nuggets before.  Why not try something new?  We got my favorite Polynesian sauce.  Dr. P was a sauce bandit and got Chick-fil-A sauce, buttermilk ranch sauce, and buffalo sauce.  He also got a peach milkshake.  The shake was a little watery, but still good.  The one I got from Walnut location was better though.  I like how you get little pieces of fresh peach in the shake.

Dr. P was at work, and called me around lunch time to ask me if I would like to have a lunch date with him at Whole Foods Market.  Of course!  Dr. P really really really likes the noodle soup at Whole Foods.

We ordered our noodle soup at the Asian food counter, paid, and found a seat at the little dining area.  I love the fresh sunflowers on the table.

[Irvine] [Light Meal] Crepes de Paris

Crepes de Paris
2700 Alton Pkway #A125
Irvine, CA 92606
(949) 727-2096
http://www.crepesdeparisinc.com

We go to Diamond Jamboree plaza all the time.  Every time we pass by Crepes de Paris, the little cafe is always somewhat empty.  I wonder how they manage to stay in business, but still sort of want to try their crepes.  I saw a "$10 for $20 Worth of Delectable Crepes and More at Crepes de Paris" deal on Deal Perk, I thought it would be a perfect chance to try the place.  (P.S. Deal Perk is another website that is similar to Groupon.)

Crepes de Paris is a really cute little cafe.  We were supposed to order from the counter and pay first.  But we sat down to study the menu, and the girl behind the counter came up to us to take our orders since we were the only customers.  Also I think she did that to make some tips.

Gorilla Reunion

I saw this video on Today Show.  It's amazing, heartwarming, and it made me cry!  I love gorillas!!

[Irvine] [Japanese] Taiko Japanese Restaurant

Taiko Japanese Restaurant
14775 Jeffrey Road #K
Irvine, CA 92618-0403
(949) 559-7190

Every time we passed by Taiko, we see tons of people waiting for tables.  It doesn't matter if it was day, night, weekday, or weekend, this place is always full.  Taiko must be the most popular Japanese restaurant in Irvine.  We wonder why, and assumed the food must be good then.  We just have to try it for ourselves.  Dr. P worked form http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com on Monday.  Perfect day to try an early dinner at Taiko to avoid the crowd.

The restaurant opens at 5pm for dinner service.  We got there at 4:50pm, and there were always people waiting in line to get in.

Another $100 from MySurvey

I wrote about MySurvey.com before.  Basically it's a website where you can take surveys for points, then exchange the points for cash or prizes.  I just received another $100 from them.  I have been a member for about 5 years now.  So far I've collected $1,000 just by doing surveys.  That breaks down to about $200 a year.  I know it's not a lot of money.  But it's free money, right?  Membership is always free.  I recommend MySurvey.com to people who would like to have a little extra income on the side.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Grandma P's 100th Birthday

It was Dr. P's grandma's 100th birthday last Sunday. 100th birthday! 100TH BIRTHDAY!!!! I don't think I've known anyone who is 100 years old before I met Grandma P. The birthday party was held at Uncle P's house. Dr. P has a really big family with 4 generations all together at one time.  It was a really great birthday party with a lovely family and delicious food.

There were about 50 people at the party.  Every table at Uncle P's house was covered with food.  Some were catered, and some were prepared by the aunties.

We came to the same location for dim sum before.  This place used to be Royal Kitchen Seafood Restaurant.  Now it became a Szechuwan restaurant called Spicy City.  We came here to try some spicy Chinese food for lunch.

They just opened last week.  We went for a late lunch.  The staffs were having lunch when we got there.  We felt bad to bother them while they were eating, but they greeted us with big smile.  The cooks and waitstaff were all very nice and friendly.

[Irvine] [Japanese] Sushilicious

Sushilicious
15435 Jeffrey Rd #119
Irvine, CA 92618
(949) 552-2260
http://www.sushilicious.com

We were both feeling like having sushi for lunch on Wednesday.  By the time I got back from school, it was already 2pm.  We called around a few places, and found out that most Japanese restaurants close for lunch around 2pm.  Dr. P suggested Kula Sushi since they stay opened the entire afternoon.  Hey, if revolving sushi places all stay opened in the afternoon, what about that new revolving sushi restaurant, Sushilicious?

Sushilicious opened its door maybe about 1 or 2 month ago.  They were just putting on a more permanent sign on the day we went.

HTC Droid Incredible

Yes! I finally have a smart phone.  So I heard iPhone might be available for Verizon customers in June.  I was going to be patient and wait till June.  But then I saw the review for HTC Droid Incredible on CNET, and decided to get the phone right away.

Retail price for the phone is $529.99.  With a contact for another 2 years, and my "new every 2 years" discount of $50, plus a 15% off coupon code, the final price was $134.99 for the phone.  It also came with a free 2GB memory card and card reader.

[Irvine] [Pizza] Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut
972 Barranca Pkwy
Irvine, CA, 92606
(949) 551-1505
http://www.pizzahut.com

Dr. P wanted to stay http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com to watch UFC, and I was too lazy to cook.  We decided to order pizza form Pizza Hut to go with Dr. P's beer and fight on TV.  Pizza Hut has a special right now for any pizza any size any topping for $10.  Online ordering is very easy and convenient to use.  They do charge $2 delivery fee.  30 minutes after ordering, we got hot pizza on the table.

Hawaiian Luau / Super Supreme Pizza ($10.00)

We ordered a large pizza, half Hawaiian Luau, and half Super Supreme.

Woodbury East Santa Rosa

We were driving to Irvine Spectrum, but Dr. P just realized he punched in the wrong address on his navigation. We exit the freeway, and pull over to one of the side street to get the correct address. Then we saw Woodbury East across the street with a big sign saying "Now Selling". So I said, "hey, why don't we go take a look?"  We looked at several different model http://www.eileenlikestoeat.coms.  I like Santa Rosa 2 bedroom model the best.

Bright living room with high ceiling and balcony.

[Mission Viejo] [Mexican] Tortilla Flats

Tortilla Flats
27792 Vista del Lago
Mission Viejo, CA 92692
(949) 830-9980
http://www.tortillaflatsrestaurant.com

I bought a $20 certificate from Tortilla Flats for $10 at Groupon.  I am seriously loving Groupon.  Not only I get to save money, it also gives me a chance to explorer Orange County and try new restaurants.

I have never been to Mission Viejo before.  It's a beautiful city with really blue sky.  There's a lake in the middle of the city, and Tortilla Flats is located right by the lake.

[Walnut] [Supermarket] Fresh & Easy

Fresh & Easy
21580 Valley Blvd
Walnut, CA 91789
(909) 595-2643
http://www.freshandeasy.com

After going to school for almost 2 years, I just found out that there is a microwave in the agriculture department office for us students to use.  It was very thoughtful of the department to provide that since a lot of our classes go from 9am straight to 4pm.  I picked up something on my way to school from Fresh & Easy.

Chicken Fajita Bowl ($3.99)

I got a Chicken Fajita Bowl.  It smelt really good, but tasted just ok.  I didn't like the flavor too much. But I like the vegetable and tender chicken breast.  I probably won't get this again though.

After trying a variety of "bowls" from Fresh & Easy, I think I like the Indian ones the best.

[San Gabriel] [Taiwanese] 阿宗麵線 Ay-Chung Flour-Rice Noodle

Ay-Chung Flour-Rice Noodle
阿宗麵線

140 W Valley Blvd #208
San Gabriel, CA 91776
(626) 280-0186

I have been craving for Ay-Chung Flour-Rice Noodle.  Original plan was going to New Capital for dim sum, then get take-out from Ay-Chung in the same plaza.  Even though plan changed (see previous post), I still wanted Ay-Chung after dim sum.

阿宗麵線 House Special Thicken Soup Thin Noodle ($4.60)

I wanted it so bad that I didn't want to get it for to-go anymore.  I just wanted to have it NOW!  Their House Special Thicken Soup Thin Noodle with intestine is the best!  I always add their special "tiger" chili sauce in my noodle.  The chili sauce wasn't as spicy as before though.  Dr. P was too full from dim sum, so I finished this whole bowl by myself!

[Alhambra] [Chinese] Lunasia Chinese Cuisine

Lunasia Chinese Cuisine
凱旋宮

500 W Main St #A
Alhambra, CA 91801
(626) 308-3222

Our original plan was to go to New Capital for dim sum and pay for the deposit to have our wedding reception there.  Before leaving, I thought maybe we should go back to 888 for dim sum since we liked it so much last time.  Then on the 2nd thought, I also wanted to try Lunasia's dim sum since a lot of people recommended it.  We finally decided  on Lunasia as we walked out the door.  Who knew that thought totally changed our wedding reception plan?  haha....

The parking lot was packed.  Lots of cars were waiting for parking spaces.  But as soon as we pulled in the parking lot, a car near the entrance backed out, and we got a parking space without any effort.  When we walked up to the door, there were tons of people waiting both outside and inside the restaurant.  We even thought if the wait was too long, then we'll just go to 888.  We went up to the hostess and said, "2, please" just as a waiter walked by.  He turned and said, "2 only?  Follow me."  The hostess didn't even put our name down on the long waiting list and we got seats.  I mean.... seemed like everything was meant to be....

[Rowland Heights] [Dessert] Genki Living

Genki Living
1380 Fullerton Rd
Rowland Heights, CA 91748
(626) 581-1395

After dinner, we went on our quest to search for dessert.  At first we wanted shaved ice.  We went across the street to that Ranch 99 plaza.  There is a Taiwanese restaurant called Class 302 that serves shaved ice.  But the wait for a seat is 20 minutes.  So we decided to go to Diamond Plaza's Ten Ren's Tea Time.  Even the wait there was 20 minutes.  Seemed like every place was packed on Saturday night.  Finally we found an empty shop, Genki Living.

I've been to Genki Living in Arcadia a few times and like the dessert a lot.  They serve Japanese (or more Taiwanese?) style crepe.

[Rowland Heights] [Seafood] The Boiling Crab

The Boiling Crab
18902 E Gale Ave
Rowland Heights, CA 91748
(626) 964-9300
http://www.theboilingcrab.com

My friend Jennifer invited us to go to The Boiling Crab for dinner last night.  Our friends were nice enough to offer to come down to OC Garden Grove location.  But since 4 of them all live up at SGV, it would make more sense if we drive up to meet them.  We decided to try the newest Rowland Heights location.

This place used to be a Taiwanese restaurant called Kanpai.  Now the inside looks completely different.  We were supposed to meet at 5:30pm for an early dinner to avoid the long wait.  There was no wait for seats when we arrived.  But we ended up waiting for our friends because they can't seat us until the entire party is there.  Dr. P and I got there on time.  Jennifer and hubby got there 15 minutes later.  Then Sharon and her man, who live right down the street in Rowland Heights, came 1 hour and 10 minutes later.... >_<  Ahhhhh.....  Yeah my girlfriends are ALWAYS late, REALLY late.

木須肉串 Moo Shu Pork Kebabs

I saw the recipe for Moo Shu Pork Kebabs on Rachael Ray's website.  The recipe looks simple, and I have all of the seasoning ingredients on hand.  I made a quick visit to the supermarket to pick up fresh vegetable and meat.  30 minutes later, I had Moo Shu Pork Kebabs on the table for lunch.

Moo Shu Pork Kebabs

There was no coleslaw mix at H Mart, which is a Korean supermarket.  So I bought cabbage and carrot, and shredded it myself.  Thank god that I just bought a mandoline, which made the job so much easier.  I used more vegetable than the recipe called for.  It never hurts to have more veggies.  The hoisin and soy mixed sauce was great.  It tasted pretty light right after cooking.  I placed the leftover in a container with all of the sauce from the baking pan.  The meat and mushroom was more flavorful the next day.  The way to eat it is simply making a "burrito" using the vegetables and pork.  Of course you can also eat the kabobs and slaw without the wrap.  Dr. P likes the dish a lot.  So do I.

Very easy and fast recipe. Also very cheap to make.  It's also light and healthy.  This is definitely a keeper.

[Irvine] [Indian] Annapoorna Indian Cuisine

Annapoorna Indian Cuisine
14450 Culver Dr #A
Irvine CA 92604
(949) 651-1144
http://www.myannapoorna.com

We felt like having Indian buffet for lunch.  We like Haveli a lot, but I wanted to try a new restaurant.  There are always coupons from Indian restaurants in this coupon book we get in the mail.  After a quick flip through the coupon book, I found Annapoorna Indian Cuisine.

The coupon is for $6.99/person lunch buffet ($8.99/person original price).  On their door I saw that they also have buffet lunch special on Monday and Tuesday for $6.99, no coupon needed.
