For my sister's birthday, she requested macarons instead of birthday cake.  A quick internet search and I found Layer Cake Bakery in Irvine.  It was a Thursday, and the plaza was packed with high school kids around 11am. Layer Cake Bakery was also filled with kids.  Most of them were getting sandwiches for lunch.  But I came for their sweets.

There were 7 different flavored macaroon on the day I went.  There were Hazelnut buttercream....

Mango buttercream....

Passion Fruit buttercream.... (my favorite!!)

Caramel buttercream....

Pistachio buttercream....

Coconut buttercream....

and Chocolate Ganache.

They even have my absolute favorite dessert of all time, Canelle!

French Macaron (12) ($19.20)

I got a dozen Macarons with all the different flavors.  My favorite was the passion fruit.  My sister's favorite was coconut.  I took some leftover http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.  Dr. P loved it as well.  He went back a few days later and got more macarons to bring http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com for me.  :-)  My sister came down to Orange County to visit a few weeks after, and also made a trip to Layer Cake bakery to get more macarons.

Canelle ($2.25/each)
chewy & caramelly on the outside

Love the canelle!  A little crunchy on the top, caramelly on the outside, and soft & chewy on the inside.  Best dessert in the whole wide world!

The sweets at Layer Cake Bakery is pricey.  It's pretty much about $1 every yummy bite.  My sister was really happy with her birthday treats, so I was very happy, too!  This was only the beginning of her birthday feasting day!

  1. I love macarons too--I fell in love with them while I was in HK and Tokyo because they seemed to be everywhere.

Yeah, macarons are all over Asia.
But I rarely see them in the U.S.

  2. Wonderful photos... I have never seen anything like this before---but I admit to staying away from bakeries----I'm fat enough already. They look like little hamburgers!

Yup, those are sweet little hamburger that taste like they are made in heaven. haha....
If you ever seen them in a bakery, just get one to try.

  3. yummmm...
