[San Gabriel] [Chinese] 湘味樓 Xiang Wei Lou Restaurant

Xiang Wei Lou Restaurant
湘味樓

My dad loves spicy food, but my mom doesn't eat anything spicy (well, except kimchi).  Last time we went to Liang's Kitchen, we passed by Xiang Wei Lou Restaurant in the same plaza.  We saw their posted menu on the window, and it said "we can make all the dishes non-spicy per request".  So dad thought we could check out the place and order some non-spicy dishes for my mom at this Szechuan restaurant.

The night we went, the entire restaurant was empty the whole night.  The two people sitting down in the picture were the workers.  I don't know.  I always feel a little awkward when eating in an empty restaurant.

酸辣大腸 Hot & Sour Pork Intestines ($8.99)

All the dishes we ordered are under "Chef Recommended" section.  I picked Hot & Sour Pork Intestines.  It was the best dish ever!  The pork intestine was stir fried with sour cabbage, celery and carrot.  It wasn't too spicy.  Just the right amount of spiciness and sourness that just open up our palate.  Dad also agreed that this was the best dish of the night.

梅菜扣肉 Steamed Pork with Sun Dried Vegetables ($8.99)

Mom picked Steamed Pork with Sun Dried Vegetables.  The pork looked pretty on the plate when it came out.  But after moving the sliced pork around, we saw that most of the pork was just fat.  There were only three pieces with meat on it.  There wasn't that much sun dried vegetables either.  This dish did not have the sun dried vegetables fragrance at all.  We were all very disappointed about this dish.

煲仔腊味 Preserved Delicacy Combination ($10.99)

Dad picked Preserved Delicacy Combination.  There were fish, ham, and chicken in it.  I couldn't be the fair judge of the dish because I never like preserved meat.  But dad thought it was great.  I did tried a few pieces.  The meat just tasted salty and dry to me.  Preserved fish was also salty, and tasted very fishy.

黃燜土雞 House Special Brown Sauce Chicken ($7.99)

We wanted to order one more non-spicy dish for my mom.  The waitress recommended House Special Brown Sauce Chicken.  The chicken was cut up into small bite size.  There were a lot of bones.  This dish tasted just alright.  It was nothing special.

The only dish I like was the hot and sour intestines.  Honestly, we didn't really care too much about this restaurant.  We all agreed that we probably won't come back for our second visit at Xiang Wei Lou Restaurant.

  1. Hey Eileen - I like the way they prepare pork intestines here. We also thought the whole steamed fish was a bargain. Didn't like the combination smoked meats, we thought Hunan Seafood was the best, but of course, there's the "issue" we have with rice there.

My family and I like the food at Hunan Seafood much better than this place.
But same here. After we heard about the rice "issue", we've never gone back.

  2. Hey Eileen, you got a better meal than I did at Xiang Wei Lou. I just think I ordered the wrong dishes. LOL

I don't think it was the wrong dishes.
This place really is just ok. We wouldn't try too hard to go back again for sure.
