[Los Angeles] [Japanese] Ugly Roll Sushi

Ugly Roll Sushi

We felt like having sushi, but didn't have much money to burn.  Where could we go in West LA?  Ugly Roll Sushi, of course.

I wonder how did they come up with the name "Ugly" Roll Sushi?

They did a little remodling inside.  Now the kitchen is in the back and the dining area is more spacious.  There are also tons of Japanese and English manga book on the book shelf for people to read.

Miso Soup

Ugly Roll now offers combo platter for 1, 2, 3 or 4 people.  We opted for the Ugly Platter for 2.  It was $18.95.  But there was a $2.00 off coupon on their to-go menu, which the cashier handed to us.  So for $16.95, we got soup, salad, tempura, and 4 rolls.  Not a bad deal.

Salad

I love their side salad.  They don't just give you lettuce and dressing.  We also got some crab meat and fish roe, along with some fresh avocado.  Delicious!

Tempura (4 pcs of Shrimp & Veggies)

Tempura was great.  We got 4 pieces of shrimps with some broccoli, snap pea, and sweet potato tempura.

Rolls (Rainbow, California, Cajn & Spicy Salmon)

The 4 rolls that came with the combo were supposed to be Rainbow, Cajn, Spicy Salmon, and California.  But while we were ordering, I mentioned to Dr. P that I would like to have some Eel roll in the combo.  The sushi chef must overheard what I said.  Instead of California roll, he gave us Eel roll!  That was so nice of him.  I love all of the rolls, especially the spicy salmon roll.  All the ingredients were fresh, and the raw fish tasted delicious.

Yellowtail Hand Roll

Dr. P ordered an extra Yellowtail hand roll.  The yellowtail was melt-in-your-mouth kind.  Yum!

Delicious sushi lunch for 2 for under $20.  I love Ugly Roll Sushi!

  1. These rolls rock and they are not ugly at all! Funny name, must have a story behind, right?

The tempura looks so scrumptious too.

    I know, funny name yeah?
Tempura tasted as good as it looked.

  2. Wow! This definitely looks like worth visiting when I am in the area. The ingredients look so high quality and so fresh! It amazes me that they used fresh and real crab meat and not imitation for the salad. Don't see that too often in most of my local sushi restaurants these days.

Yup, fresh crab! Next time you're in the area, you should try this place.
Food is delicious, and the price is very reasonable.

This is a different review than my old ones.
This place is really a bargain, especially in the West LA area where everything is pricey.
