[Rowland Heights] [Taiwanese] 乾杯 Kanpai (CLOSED)

(CLOSED)

I heard one of my old friends was working at Kanpai.  So we went to visit on a Tuesday night.  Lucky me.  I picked the one day my friend was off work so I didn't get to see him.  But that's ok.  We still had a great dinner that night.

I used to go to a restaurant with the same name, Kanpai, in Taiwan all the time.  It's a BBQ beer house.  If you let them take a kissing picture, you get a free beef plate.  Ahhhh memory!  I kissed so many of my friends just for some free beef.

Kanpai in Rowland Heights was not affiliated with the Taiwan branch.  But they also served the same style of BBQ, along with Taiwanese hot dishes which the Taiwan restaurant doesn't have.

The combo meal with beer looked like a great value.  So we ordered the hot dishes combo, 5 dishes and 2 beers for $49.95.

豆芽 Bean Sprout

Bean Sprout was the free appetizer the restaurant offered.

台灣金牌啤酒 Taiwan Gold Beer

We had 2 Taiwan Gold Beer with the combo meal.  Is the gold label supposed to be better than the regular one?

黑椒牛柳 Beef Cube with Black Pepper Sauce

Beef Cube with Black Pepper Sauce was tender.  The sauce was pretty good with rice.

清炒豆苗 Sauteed Vegetable

Our friend asked me what kind of vegetable it was.  I had no idea what the English name is for 豆苗.  We even asked our waiter, and he had no idea.  I love this vegetable.  Our friends like it a lot, too.

甕蝦蒜香奶油 Garlic Butter Shrimp

Garlic Butter Shrimp was yummy.  It was a pain to peel the shrimp, but it was all worth it.  Our friend Timmy just ate the whole shrimp with the shell and head and all.  He said all the flavor was on the shell, and it tasted better that way.

蒜泥白肉 Pork Belly with Garlic Soy Sauce

I always like Pork Belly with Garlic Soy Sauce.  Kanpai's version wasn't exactly the way I like it.  The pork had too much fat.  The sauce was on the thin side and didn't have enough garlic flavor.  I still ate a whole lot with my rice.  But our non-Taiwanese friends didn't seem to like this dish too much.

三杯豆腐 Three Cup Tofu

Three Cup Tofu was great.  The tofu soaked in all the flavor of the three cup sauce.  Another good dish with rice.

牛舌 Beef Tongue ($7.95)

We also ordered a few BBQ dishes.  Beef Tongue was pretty good.  But I accidentally cooked a few for too long, and they turned rough.

牛肋條肉 Beef Short Ribs with BBQ Sauce ($7.95)

Beef Short Ribs with BBQ Sauce was my favorite BBQ meat.  The beef was really fresh.  The BBQ Sauce was tasty.

雞腿肉 Chicken Leg with Miso Sauce ($6.95)

Chicken Leg with Miso Sauce was a great value.  We got so much meat in this dish, especially comparing to the beef tongue.  The chicken leg meat was tender.  I couldn't really taste the miso sauce though.

奶油金針菇 Butter Enoki Mushroom ($5.95)

Butter Enoki Mushroom was tasty.  But this was way overpriced for what it was.  I could get a big bag of enoki mushroom for $0.99.  Throw in some garlic and butter, the cost couldn'be be more than $1.50.  Dr. P loves it.  I will definitely make this at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com next time.

We ordered 3 more Taiwan Gold Beer because it was happy hour and the price was only $1.50 per bottle.  When we got the bill, they "accidentally" charged 1 beer with regular price on the bill.  Hmmm.... I don't know how did the "accident" happened.  Instead of punching in 3 for "2 HH Tw Gold (B)", they punched in 2 for "HH Tw Gold (B)" and another 1 for "Taiwan Gold Bt"?  If they actually just punched in 3 regular price one, then that seemed more like an accident.  It really gets on my nerve when I find restaurants trying to cheat their customers, especially when they think you had a few drinks and probably won't pay much attention to the bill.

Well, it doesn't really matter anymore.  Beacause I heard a few days after our visit, the restaurant closed its door.  Oh well....

  1. What a fun restaurant! The photos of the food are excellent and the meat looks very nicely presented :). The Sauteed Vegetable is actually called "Pea Tips". It is also one of my favorite veggies!

Thanks! Now I can tell my friend the name of the vegetable. haha....

  2. That is a very short lived restaurant. Too bad, the food looked very yummy.

They should've hired some waitresses in skimpy outfit like all the other Taiwanese beer house.
    Maybe business would be better....
