[Garden Grove] [Vietnamese] Lua Bistrot

Lua Bistrot
9892 Westminster Ave
Garden Grove, CA 92844
(714) 839-8338

I found Lua Bistrot from Monster Muching's blog.  What?  Steak & Egg is only $8.95?  And the steak picture looked so good.  I bookmarked the page immediately.  Dr. P got paid on April 1st and took me for our weekday date night.  I didn't want him to spend too much money right in the beginning of the month.  How about $8.95 Steak & Egg?  Perfect!

Lua Bistrot is located in a big Vietnamese plaza with a 99 cents store.  They are definitely the fanciest and most modern looking place in the plaza.  Don't let the fanciness fool you.  Their price is more than reasonable.

The decor is simple, modern, and clean.  The leather chair is comfy.  There's a nice bar area right by the open kitchen.  Quite a few people sat there and chatted with the chef throughout the night.

Chanh Giay ($2.50)
Passion Fruit

Passion fruit juice was both sour and sweet.  Very refreshing.

Corona Beer ($2.50)

Their beer is cheap, only $2.50 a bottle.  Dr. P ordered a Corona.  It came with a plate of salt and a slice of lemon.  During their happy hour, beer is only $1.75.

Steak & Eggs ($8.95)
8 oz House Rib Eye Steak, Farm Fresh Sunny Side Up Egg, Chef Mixed Green, House Sauce on Sizzling Plate

Lua Bistrot has a small menu, offering Vietnamese French cuisine as well as traditional Vietnamese food.  Steak & Egg is probably their most popular dish.  I saw a lot of people ordering this one.  The waiter told us we might have to wait for a little bit for our food because everything was made fresh, even the rotisserie chicken.  We didn't mind the 15 minutes wait at all for some delicious fresh food.  Dr. P ordered the steak medium, but it came out to be more like medium-well.  Even though it was medium-well, it was still very soft and juicy.  Dr. P commented that it tasted even better than those $30 steaks you get from fancy steakhouse.  The rib eye tasted almost like filet mignon.  The house sauce might have some cognac in it.  It was delicious.  On the side there was a perfectly cooked sunny side up egg with half-cooked creamy yolk.  Garlic fries smelt heavenly.  Dr. P couldn't get enough of those.  The salad had a Vietnamese style vinaigrette (with fish sauce?) dressing.  It also had the Vietnamese style pickled carrot and onion.  So delicious!

Com Suon Nuong ($4.95)
Grilled Pork Chop w/ Rice

We wanted to order the rotisserie chicken, but they were out of it that night.  So we ordered the same thing as Monster Muching, Com Suon Nuong, or grilled pork chop rice.  It came with the same salad as the steak.  The grilled pork chop was done just right, not dry and not too tough.  My favorite part of the meat is the area near the bone.

Fish Sauce

What made the dish even better was the spicy fish sauce.  I could eat a bowl of rice with just this sauce.  Another funny thing is that our waiter didn't give me a knife, but gave me a whole stack of paper towel with my dish.  So the pork chop was meant to be eaten with.... my hands?  haha....

Creme Brulee

After the meal, our smiling waiter brought us FREE dessert!  It wasn't something like jello or ice cream.  It was creme brulee!  Something that actually require some effort into making one!  The creme brulee was cold on the bottom, but still hot on the top since they just made the caramelized sugar top.  Perfect ending to a perfect meal!

We love Lua Bistrot!  Their price is ridiculously low.  How do they even make money?  The price is the same as those hole in the wall kind of restaurants, but this place actually has very nice decor.  I never expect good service at Vietnamese restaurant, but our waiter is nice, polite, and always has a big smile on his face.  He made our dining experience even more pleasant.  We can't wait to go back again to try more of their delicious food!
