My mom heard about J.J. Bakery's lunch bento from her friends. We went to the Rowland Heights location first, and found out that they only have bento between 11am to 2pm. They told us that we should go to City of Industry location for more food. That store was only a few minutes away from Rowland Heights location. It seemed very new. One side was bakery, and the other side was Taiwanese restaurant.
Specialty Pork Chop Rice ($7.25)
I ordered two bentos to bring http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com, and Mom & sister also bought two to bring http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com. To-go orders are 10% off, which was nice. Specialty Pork Chop Rice is their most popular item. The pork chop was oily, but pretty good. Dr. P loved it. I like their bamboo shoots a lot.
Curry Chicken Rice ($6.25)
Mom also ordered a Curry Chicken Rice. The curry was a bit too sweet in my opinion.
Stewed Pork w/ Bamboo Shoot Rice ($6.75)
My favorite was Stewed Pork w/ Bamboo Shoot Rice. The pork belly had just the right amount of fat and lean meat. The meat was stewed with right amount of time and right amount of flavor. The stewed bamboo was so Taiwanese and so good. Love this bento!
Traditional Iced Tofu Pudding w/ Peanut Soup ($3.50)
Mom and sister tried Traditional Iced Tofu Pudding from J.J. Bakery in Arcadia. They both like Arcadia's tofu pudding better. They said the tofu was silkier. Also Arcadia store put the tofu pudding and ginger sugar water in two separate container, so they could add it to the tofu to their own taste. The syrup from this location was just sugar syrup with no ginger taste.
The price here is a bit higher than other Taiwanese restaurants in the SGV, but you get a lot of vegetables in their bento. I would definitely recommend their stewed pork. My sister said their breakfast is pretty good, too. Hope to try their breakfast soon.
P.S. Nice to meet you... ^_^

is this in the new plaza off 60 freeway? is there outdoor seating?
ReplyDeleteI don't know that area that well so I'm not sure if that's a new plaza or not.
There's no outdoor seating for J.J. Bakery.
There's a Japanese Italian plaza in the same plaza that seems quite interesting.

I hope you like 排骨飯, and Peggy, too! ^_*
OK. $7.25? for a Taiwanese bento? OMG expensive! Altho JJ Bakery's breads are just all top notch...
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's a little pricey.
But their side dishes are better, not just the usual cabbage and pickle.
The stewed bamboo shoot they sell (it looks different than the one in your picture)tastes exactly like the bento box side dish in Taiwan. I really enjoy it! Perhaps you can give it a try next time you're there. I like this place and wish they open one in my neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteAre you talking about the bamboo shoot underneath the stewed pork (in the pic)?
I LOVE those! It tasted so authentic Taiwanese. Made me miss Taiwan so bad.
