We have been to California Shabu Shabu in Fountain Valley a few times. Then we found out they have a location in Costa Mesa, which is even closer to us. Also we have been going to shabu shabu for lunch instead of dinner. Portion is about the same, and the price is much cheaper for lunch. Yesterday Dr. P was craving for shabu shabu again. So we went to try California Shabu Shabu at this new location.
This California Shabu Shabu looked new and modern. It's right next to Shark Club! I remember I came to this club once when I was really young. Now I found it again, and it's still the same Shark Club!
This location seemed bigger. It has a young, hip and trendy vibe with the artworks on the wall. All the waitstaff also fit that bill.
Ponzu Sauce / Brown Rice / Goma Sauce
Both their ponza sauce and goma sauce were great. The ponzu sauce tasted even better with tons of garlic and two drops of their special "hot drop". I also added two drops to my goma sauce. Bonus: I heard that spicy food speeds up your metabolism so this was my "spicy diet". haha.... We also got the healthier brown rice instead of white rice, with no extra charge too!
Vegetable Plate
I wished they would give us more vegetable though. There were cabbage, green leaf veggie, carrot, tofu, seaweed, and noodle on the plate. Shabu Shabu Bar's veggie plate is much much bigger. Everything on the plate was fresh and clean. I saw this guy only added the noodle to his hot pot, and he didn't eat anything else on the palte. Why don't guys eat veggies? Veggies are good for you!
Choice Beef (Large) ($13.50)
Shabu Shabu Bar might have better vegetables, but California Shabu Shabu has better beef. Dr. P ordered a large, which is 12 pieces of freshly sliced beef. It though it was the cheapest choice of beef, it still had the perfect balance of fat marbling to tender meat.
Pork (Large) ($13.50)
I ordered a large pork. The plate of pork looked so pretty, like a blooming flower. haha.... The pork was great, but it was sliced maybe a bit too thin. Comparing to Shabu Shabu Bar again, I like Shabu Shabu Bar's pork better.
Udon Soup
Ahhhh a bowl of udon soup to end the meal. Heavenly!
Delicious delicious delicious! We really love shabu shabu. We actually like both California Shabu Shabu and Shabu Shabu Bar equally. I think we will alternate going between those two places. We just had shabu shabu yesterday, but Dr. P is craving for shabu shabu again today! haha....
Oh yeah! There's a new Yogurtland in the Diamond Jamboree plaza now! Woohoo~~~~ Now I can walk there and have Yogurtland EVERYDAY!

I would highly recommend Fraiche in Culver City.
It is exactly that you are asking for... It's an American/Italian/French restaurant that has a nice ambience in LA area.
