[Arcadia] [Chinese] Chang's Garden

Chang's Garden

I went home to have a belated Mother's Day dinner with my family. Brother suggested Chang's Garden. They all ate there before, and thought the food was good. I've never been there, and was really looking forward for some delicious Shanghainese food.

花生 Peanuts

Our friendly waitress brought us some free peanuts while we looked through the menu. The first thing I noticed about the waitresses at this restaurant was that EVERYONE has the same haircut! They all had this short bob cut with bang. They were all wearing the same uniform. I wonder if they have "uniform hair" rule, too?

Tung Po Pork ($14.95)

After we ordered, Tung Po Pork was brought out right away. Ironically, I think this item should take the longest time to prepare and cook. This is one of their signature items. I assume a lot of people order this dish, so they probably pre-made a whole bunch of them already. The pork had great flavor, but we still thought it wasn't cooked long enough since the meat was still not that tender and soft. The skin was super delicious though. It melt in your mouth, but didn't feel fatty at all. The brown sauce was so good with rice.

Flamming Pig's Intestine ($10.95)

My dad, brother, and I all love intestine. If I can only order one dish to go with rice, I would get this one. the intestine was soft and delicious. Lots of big chunks of pig blood. The sauce was spicy and full of flavor. Really good dish.

Bamboo Fungus with Chinese Squash ($8.95)

Bamboo Fungus with Chinese Squash is a healthy and delicious vegetarian dish. I love the taste and texture of bamboo fungus. You can find info about bamboo fungus on Wikipedia if you don't know what it is.

Preserved Vegetable with Pork & Bean Sheets ($7.95)

Preserved Vegetable with Pork & Bean Sheets had a subtle flavor. I liked the dish because it used very little oil and tasted very healthy.

Shanghai Style Rice Cake ($7.95)

I highly recommend Chang's Garden's Shanghai Style Rice Cake. It was DELICIOUS! The rice cake was cooked with pork and green veggies. I could taste strong garlic flavor in the cooking sauce. It just tasted so good.

Seaweed Flavored Fried Fish ($13.95)

Seaweed Flavored Fried Fish came out last. The seaweed battered fried fish was seasoned well and quite tasty.

Red Bean Sweet Soup

A bowl of hot Red Bean Sweet Soup to end the perfect meal.

We compared Chang's Garden with Shanghai Bamboo House where we went to before. Chang's Garden is more expensive, but the food tastes better. I really like the food here. They also have lunch special, and everything is a few dollars cheap during lunch hour. Would love to return here again for yummy Shanghainese food.

  3. Hi Eileen, Avca69,

There are a few San Diego restaurants that are really good.

For dim sum and Cantonese food, Emerald Restaurant is the best. http://www.emeraldrestaurant.com/
    Really fresh and tasty food.

For real Sichuan food, Spicy City is the most famous. This is the original one and is better (hotter and spicier) than the one in Irvine.

If you like northern Chinese (noodles, dumplings, shui jiao, etc.) you must try Dumpling Inn. This tiny place makes amazing food - reminds of excellent northern Chinese you get in Taiwan (tastes just like home).

Another place that has excellent Chinese food is Golden City. The price is comparable to Emerald, but the style of food is different. They do speak Cantonese and some can speak Mandarin.

I've personally eaten at all of these places many times. I'd go back to any one of these in a heartbeat.

    Thank you soooooo much, Tenjo!
I won't have to worry about finding a restaurant for yummy Chinese food next time visiting San Diego! :-)
