Ji Rong Restaurant

Ji Rong Restaurant

8450 Valley Blvd., #114
Rosemead, CA 91770

My sister's getting acupuncture treatment from a Chinese Medicine doctor now.  While chitchatting, the Beijing doctor recommended Ji Rong, saying they serve really authentic Beijing food.  Sister and I came here for lunch to try some of the doctor's recommended dishes.

They serve lunch special from 11am to 4pm.  Lunch special has dishes that are $3.98, $4.98, $5.98 or $6.98.  Their business was pretty good.  Service definitely needs improvement though.  A waiter was taking us to our seats, on the way a customer asked for a drink, then he just left us there and went to the back to get the drink.  And he didn't even come back to us.  He just totally forgot about us.

Tomato Soup

The free soup was tomato soup.  It tasted more like a ketchup soup.

Beef Rolls ($7.98)

Beef Rolls was one of the recommended dish from my sister's doctor.  This was really really good!  The wrap was flaky and tasty, a bit oily though but I didn't care.  The beef was tender, and the combination of the sweet bean sauce with cilantro was just delicious!  Another appetizer the doctor highly recommended was Chong Qing Spicy Cold Chicken But they didn't have it yesterday.  Too bad!

Pig Liver in Basil Leaves ($4.98)

I wanted to order Sauteed On Choy with Garlic (蒜蓉空心菜) but they were also out of that.  So I changed it to Liver with Basil.  Taiwanese people say liver is good for woman's health.  The liver was pretty good, but the brown sauce was too salty.  I didn't like it at first.  Then I washed the sauce off with my hot tea, and it tasted so much better without the salty sauce.

Lamb with Cumin Flavor ($5.98)

Lamb with Cumin Flavor was a little dry.  My sister thought it tasted exotic and pretty good.

Sweet & Pungent Fish ($6.98)

The doctor said this dish was really really good, but both my sister and I thought it was just alright.

Food at Ji Rong wasn't bad, but it was nothing special or memorable.  The only thing we really like was the beef rolls.  Another good thing was price was cheap.  But that was about it.

  1. My first thought was, were these dishes Beijing specialties?

I have no idea. But seems like typical Chinese restaurant dishes, no?

I was just there Tues, it seems to me that they have changed the chef. Lots of dishes are not available anymore(Eggplant,蒜蓉空心菜..)and no more buy3 with 1 free deal. The food test OK, however there are so many resturants in the area, I won't hurry to go back!

I was also there Tuesday! haha...
Yeah I thought the food tasted much better before.
    This time was just alright.

  3. the doc told me it's 北方菜 on Wed, she also said their 糖醋魚片's good with their 麵粉炸的皮, and something like 他們炸的很好, i think she has a different taste bud for food from us, i wouldn't go back

    Yeah, definitely different taste.
I like the beef roll a lot though.
Still think Harbor Kitchen is the best!

  4. As a Beijing native, I can only say the beef roll looks very familiar but not the other dishes...glad that's the dish that you liked. maybe you can try 京酱肉丝(sweet shredded pork?) next time...there is one Beijing restaurant called 同顺居 on Valley in the same plaza as 许留山. i'll recommend it to anyone who wants to try beijing food~~

    Thank you for the recommendation.
Would love to try 同顺居 next time I'm in that area.
