Korean New Year Food

Happy new year!!!!  How was everyone's new year?  We had a really fun day with family and friends.

When we got into the car to drive up to my mother-in-law's house, the time was 11:11!  So at that moment it was 1/1/11 11:11!!!!  Gotta take a picture for that special moment.

It's Korean tradition to have Dduk Gook (rice cake soup) on new year's day for good luck.  Mrs. P makes the best Dduk Gook.  She also gave me some rice cake to take http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com to make my own Dduk Gook.  I will have to experiment with it sometime this week.  Anyone has a good recipe for dduk gook?

We also had egg rolls and kimchi to go with rice cake soup.

Then it was dumpling making time.  It's another Korean new year tradition to have mandu (dumpling) on new year's day.  Auntie S. made the filling for mandu.  She used beef and pork mixture.  She said she never buy ground meat from the supermarket.  It's better to buy better quality whole piece meat and grind it at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.  She also made the cabbage kimchi, and chopped it into small pieces to mix with the meat.  There's also garlic (tons of it), ginger, and green onion.

And this is how you make mandu. (I just got a Flip UltraHD Video Camera, and it's pretty awesome! I would like to make more videos for my blog. This is the first one, and I feel very camera shy... @^_^@)

We made about 400 mandu in the afternoon!  Some to enjoy right after, and some for everyone to take http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.

After few hours of hard work, it's dumpling time!

Mandu can be cooked either in boiling water or fried.  Last night we had them cooked in boiling water.  The mandu looked good and smelt good when it came out from the kitchen.

The mandu tasted really really good.  Much much better than the frozen ones from supermarket.  Fresh food with fresh ingredients always taste the best.

Good time with the family!  Happy new year!!  Now off to our New Year dinner #2....
