[Los Angeles] [新加坡料理] Singapore's Banana Leaf

Singapore's Banana Leaf

Laksa (US$8.50)

Farmers Market

  1. Laksa is 叻沙

What you had was probably curry laksa, cooked in coconut curry soup. Unfortunately they probably gave you watered down soup base. There used to be a very good place in Rowland Heights by HK Supermarket that served this dish, but they're gone now. :( You can see some pics of non-watered down versions here:

This type is noodle is not as popular in East Asia, but very popular in SE Asia. If you go to food courts in Singapore or Malaysia, there's almost always someone selling laksa noodles.

    These pictures look SPICY!
The noodle I had was exactly like these in the pictures...
    thick white slippery noodle.
The soup was spicy and tasty.
If I ever get a chance to visit SE Asia,
    definately will try more.

  2. Hi Eileen,

A cheap way to visit SE Asia, is to combine it with a trip back http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com to TW. Most flights going to Singapore will have a stop-over in Taipei, so you can just pay a little more for a longer "stop over".

If you take Singapore airlines, they have "Singapore Stopover Holiday" deals where you can get good prices on hotels and tour packages. They even have a "SIA Hop-on bus" to tour the island:

They have 31 hotels in the Singapore Airline special to choose from with very good prices. If you don't want to take SA or use this package, I could recommend either budget hotel (i.e. Alison) stay near Bugis, or something more expensive by Orchid road. Like Taipei you can take the MRT around town. I don't recommend the roach motels in Geylang.

Singapore has a large selection of food choices from Southern Chinese (Hakka, Hokkien), Malaysian, Indian, Western, and fusion dishes (sticky rice w/palm sugar?). Depending on your stomach's strength, you can start "safe" with any Kopitam food court in malls, then to various Hawker centers & Pasar malam (night market), then to stuff like Burger Ramly from illegal street stalls:

For breakfast, just look for street coffee shops and get kaya toast with tea or coffee. I'm not a Singapore native so knowledge is a bit skim, if you post a request for info I'm sure you'll get much more info from visitors.

If you visit Malaysia, for first time visitors I could suggest staying at Mid Valley Cititel in KL. It's attached to a big mall w/Jusco and near light rail station. You can easily get everything you need from the mall and just go tour the city. Like Singapore the food places in the mall is "safe" for most stomachs, but you get the best deals and best tasting food from street vendors with questionable sanitation. :)

The Chinatown area in SG is nice, but don't go to Chinatown in KL Malaysia. Violent crime is very, very rare but there are cheats and frauds. If street fortune tellers or anyone hit you up for $, just tell them that you're broke and walk away. In Malaysia remember that it's a Muslim country so try to respect local customs. If you have any questions feel free to ask or drop me an e-mail.
