Happiness Restaurant

Happiness Restaurant

Rowland Heights, CA 91748

On our drive back to Los Angeles, Dr. Park mentioned he wants some spicy Chinese food for dinner.  Since we were coming from the east, I decided to venture out to Rowland Heights area.  It was about 9pm on a Sunday night.  We were a little worried if the restaurant would still be opened.  The restaurant is located inside Hong Kong Supermarket building.  Most of the stores were closed.  But there were still a lot of people dining in Happiness Restaurant.

Free Appetizer

We sat down at a table by the window.  Immediately the server brought out a complimentary appetizer.  It was a cold dish made of bean sprout, carrot, peanut and cilantro.  It didn't have much flavor, but it's free.  So no complaint there.

House Special w/ Chili Sauce ($4.50)

Ordered their house special spicy wonton as appetizer.  12 wontons in the plate.  Great portion.  The wontons had pork fillings.  The sauce wasn't too spicy, and it was very garlicky.  I like the flavor a lot.  It's very.... Taiwanese.

Beef, Sliced Fish and Vegetable w/ Hot Sauce

This is Dr. Park's favorite dish.  When he says he wants spicy Chinese food, he actually means he wants this dish.  We only saw beef or fish on the menu.  We asked our waitress if they can make beef and fish for us, she kindly accepted.  The dish had a milder flavor than the other Szechuan restaurants we've been to.  It was spicy and did numb our tongue, but it didn't feel "harsh".  Dr. Park had two big bowls of rice just with this dish.

Tung's Vegetable w/ Garlic Sauce ($6.95)

We also order a non-spicy vegetable dish for balance.  Tung's vegetable is my favorite vegetable.  I'm not sure what is the proper English name for this vegetable.  I've seen other restaurants call it "watercress" or "water spinach".  But in Taiwan, we called it "hollow heart vegetable" because the stem is hollow.  It's Dr. Park's first time trying this vegetable.  He loves it!  It's a very simple dish, just stir fried with garlic.  But it's so tasty.

We like this restaruant a lot.  They use a lot of garlic to flavor their dishes.  And I find most of the dish have a particular "Taiwanese" flavor to it.  They offer 65 dishes for lunch special range from $3.95 to $6.95.  Seems like a great deal.  We will definately be back here to try more.
