My Dad's "Lu" (Braised) Goodies

我爸現在退休在家,忽然對做菜產生了很大的興趣,每天都在收看美食節目或是翻閱食譜,上周末他花了一整天的時間,做了好多滷味,有雞爪、鴨翅、鴨胗、滷蛋、海帶、豆腐乾,還有我最愛的大腸,另外還做了紅燒五花肉和拌麵飯用的滷肉,真是很厲害,這天我把爸爸做的滷味裝了個滷味便當,便當一打開坐我隔壁的同事就說「哇好香喔」,吃起來更香,非常好吃的滷味便當呢!餐後還有好東西,就是我們家後院種的蟠桃,超級好吃的。

Since my dad's retirement, he develops an interest in cooking. He likes to watch Chinese cooking shows on TV. He also buys and reads tons of Chinese cookbooks. My dad never cooked before. When he first started cooking, there were quite a few unsuccessful dishes. But now he's getting pretty good. I guess "it's never too late to learn" is true.



Last weekend my dad spent all day trying to make some "lu" food. "Lu" is a Chinese cooking method that is similar to braising. Dad used soy sauce, garlic, green onions, peppercorn, star anise, and bunch of chinese herbs to mmake the "lu" sauce. Then food was cooked in the sauce with low heat for hours. The food absorbed all the wonderful flavor from the sauce. It's so good with rice. It can also be good snacks.



My dad made duck wings, duck gizzard, chicken feet, egg, bean curd and intestine (my favorite!) with the same "lu" sauce. It was really really good. I brought a "lu" bento to work. When I opened the lid, the co-worker who sat right next to me commented on how good it smelt. I finished this bento in no time.

My dad's "lu" goodies were really good. Almost like restaurant quality good. In Taiwan, there are tons of "lu" restaurants or stands. But there were none in LA. We jokingly told my dad he could open one. I seriously wish we have a "lu wei" restaurant in LA though.



After my delicious "lu" bento, there was another goodie. Look at these beautiful peaches. These were from our backyard! We have two peach trees in our backyard. I think peach season is here. My mom picked three boxes of peaches that day. The peaches were crisp and sweet. Really delicious peach.

Ok.... looking at these pictures is making me hungry.

  1. 這些滷味和桃子樣子很棒 。 我的北加州的家裡也種了很多果樹。 可以吃到桃子﹐柿子﹐金桔﹐琵琶﹐ 等等. 住在鄉下也有好處!


    我家也有種枇杷耶

    蟠桃也看起来好好吃的样子, 长的都很上镜呢

  6. I think it's better if you go back to writing your blog in Chinese.

    The English writing just isn't as natural or as interesting as your Chinese writing.


    English isn't my first language.
    I know I don't write that well in English.
    But I'm trying hard to improve my writing skill.
    Sorry you don't like it.
    Hopefully I'll get better in the future.
