Our original plan was to go to New Capital for dim sum and pay for the deposit to have our wedding reception there. Before leaving, I thought maybe we should go back to 888 for dim sum since we liked it so much last time. Then on the 2nd thought, I also wanted to try Lunasia's dim sum since a lot of people recommended it. We finally decided on Lunasia as we walked out the door. Who knew that thought totally changed our wedding reception plan? haha....
The parking lot was packed. Lots of cars were waiting for parking spaces. But as soon as we pulled in the parking lot, a car near the entrance backed out, and we got a parking space without any effort. When we walked up to the door, there were tons of people waiting both outside and inside the restaurant. We even thought if the wait was too long, then we'll just go to 888. We went up to the hostess and said, "2, please" just as a waiter walked by. He turned and said, "2 only? Follow me." The hostess didn't even put our name down on the long waiting list and we got seats. I mean.... seemed like everything was meant to be....
Dipping Sauces
Two types of dipping sauces on the table, mustard and spicy chili sauce. I always eat my dim sum with those two sauces.
Spicy Chili Oil Sauce
But Dr. P wanted something with chili pepper in it. He asked the waiter if they have the chili pepper sauce, and the waiter brought us some. At first I thought Dr. P was being such a troublemaker for the already super busy waiter. But when I tasted the chili sauce, I was glad he asked for it. The chili sauce tasted like http://www.eileenlikestoeat.commade. I thought it tasted like more like X.O. spicy chili sauce. It was really really really really good.
蝦餃皇 Shrimp Har Gow ($3.28)
There's no dim sum cart at Lunasia. So we placed our order, and waitresses brought the food to our table. Occasionally they would bring a small tray of items and asked if anybody wanted it. The price is a bit higher than most of the dim sum restaurants in the area. I thought it was just because the place has fancier decoration. But when we saw the dim sum, we realized the portion is also much much bigger. Shrimp Har Gow was huge! The shrimp tasted so fresh and crunchy.
蟹皇燒賣 Pork Siu Mai ($3.28)
Pork Siu Mai, again, was huge! I tasted more shrimp than pork in my siu mai.
No wonder! The inside of the siu mai was also filled with shrimp. So good!
豉椒排骨 Spare Ribs Black Bean Sauce ($3.28)
Spare Ribs Black Bean Sauce was Dr. P's favorite dish of the day. The spare ribs were bigger and meatier than the other ones we've had before. Flavor was perfect. We also like the pumpkin underneath the spare ribs a lot.
陳皮牛肉丸 Supreme Beef Balls ($2.28)
Supreme beef balls was really soft and juicy. I like the cilantro in the beef balls.
蠔皇叉燒包 Steamed BBQ Pork Buns ($2.28)
Dr. P requested Steamed BBQ Pork Buns. The buns were fluffy and soft on the outside.
I thought the filling tasted alright. It just tasted like any other BBQ pork bun. But the slightly sweet soft bun itself was soooo good.
菜肉生煎飽 Vege-Pork Buns ($3.28)
I love love love love the Vege-Pork Buns. It was slightly pan-fried on the outside. So it was soft, fluffy, sweet, and crunchy.
Inside was filled with some pork and some veggie, but I really didn't care for it too much. The bun was really the bomb. haha.... Oh I just couldn't get enough of those buns. I just realized I really like "opposite" taste and texture mixing together. I like sweet & savory mix, and I also like crunchy & soft mix. haha....
皮蛋瘦肉粥 Thousand Year Old Egg Porridge ($5.88)
This was probably the biggest bowl of Thousand Year Old Egg Porridge I've had in a dim sum restaurant. It was a very simple porridge made with rice, pork, and thousand year old egg. It was done so right though. The porridge was creamy and flavorful. Pork was super tender. Add a little bit of that X.O. Chili sauce in the porridge, I ended up having 3 bowls, and Dr. P had like 5 I think?!
The food was so good at Lunasia. We decided now Lunasia is our favorite dim sum restaurant. Because we were so happy with the food, we decided just to ask the manager about their wedding banquet one last time. The manager we talked to last time told us nothing will be included, and corkage is $15/bottle. Also he didn't seemed to be too happy to answer our questions so we crossed Lunasia off our list. We saw the manager there, but when we asked the hostess to speak to the manager about banquet, that manager went to take a break. (Seriously, it was so meant to be!) A younger manager came and talked to us. So we told him the date that we were planning to have our wedding reception, he checked the date and it was available. We told him we have about maybe 15~20 table. He said we could have the entire restaurant for our party. They'll even let me use the room they have to prepare or do a cocktail dim sum party before the actual reception. We asked about corkage, he said FREE. We asked about seat cover, he said FREE. We asked about soda, he said FREE. We asked about projector, he took out a remote and put the projector down from the ceiling to show us. I mean... it was so different than what that other manager told us before. And this is a even better deal than New Capital, and a better location, and a better restaurant in our opinion. So at the very last minute, we changed our mind. Lunasia it is!
We really like the dim sum there. I am so looking forward to our 10 course wedding dinner now! Yum! haha....

It seems like all was meant to be like you said! How much difference can asking a different person make! Lunasia is a nicer restaurant compared to New Capital :). You're comparing high end (e.g. Sea Harbour, Mission 261, Capital Seafood (not "New Capital") to middle end banquet restaurant.
ReplyDeleteRemember to try lots of different items before finally deciding on what to eat. Every restaurant has its excellent dishes and just ok dishes to order!
Lunasia's banquet price is a little higher than those other restaurants.
I hope food is good. I need to go there for dinner to taste the food soon.
Like you say, when something works it just works!
ReplyDeleteI totally believe in stuff like this.
This is such a happy story!
You're very blessed Eileen, to have Dr. P, to find the love of your life, to start a new life, to work with animals which you love, to have your family who are healthy and around you...and a 10 course wedding banquet?
With free soda???? We're so happy for you!
I feel very blessed everyday. Free soda definitely made my day! haha....
Thank you, Joanna~~~~ ^^
Wow, it's amazing how things turn out. Hopefully you will only have to deal with this younger manager and not the one that wasn't very nice. The dim sum here looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteDim sum is really good here. You should try it sometime.
The younger manager is much nicer. Or maybe that other manager was just having a bad day that one time?
好棒喔
ReplyDeleteso happy for you^_^
K.J
Thank you, K.J.
we really like lunasia also~~we even drive up from Irvine to have dim sum there sometimes :P
ReplyDeletethis banquet thing was really meant to be~~glad it worked out for you~~
After trying it, I don't mind driving up to have dim sum, too!
Thank you, Mochi! ^^
I am glad to hear that you dropped New Capital.... I attend couple of Wedding Banquets there and food was not too good..Great choice at Lunasia, Congrats!! Btw, don't think you will have time to enjoy food on your wedding day, I suggest to feed yourself before the banquet starts :)
ReplyDeleteYup, I heard the bride wouldn't have much time to eat. But no me!
I'll make sure that I make time to eat. It's MY wedding and I get to do whatever I want! haha....
Congratulations to both of you! I was listening to Chinese radio a week ago. They were talking about this restaurant, however, they were eating their regular food not the dim sum. Now, I am going to put "Lunasia" on my dim sum list:)
ReplyDeleteReally? Did they give Lunasia a good review on the radio?
I'm going to try their dinner soon.
When I was listening to that Chinese radio, I was really hungry. Sounded like everything tastes really good!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to go back again!
My biggest regret for my wedding: I changed too many clothes and didn't enjoy the food & the party at all! It's your wedding. Don't need to try too hard to please all your guests. Enjoy your wedding! Congratulation!
ReplyDeleteI am only going to wear one dress throughout the whole banquet.
That'll give me more time to eat. Just hope my crazy friends won't make me drink too much. haha....
I like to see you get drunk lol...... I'm so evil.
ReplyDeleteYes, you're evil. hahahaha....
I loved Lunasia when I went there! Want dim sum now!
ReplyDeleteMe too me too! I want dim sum NOW!

ReplyDeleteHis name is Daniel Yee. Good luck!
My family came to LA from the bay area to visit, and we tried Lunasia because I suggested it after reading this blog post. I'm very happy to say that everyone enjoyed the dim sum there! Thanks for the recommendation!
ReplyDeleteI'm really glad your family enjoyed the food at Lunasia.
Now I am so craving for dim sum!
Great choice! my friend had his banquet there. Congrat on your wedding..
ReplyDeleteThank you, Calvin!
So happy that you and Dr. P are tying the knot! Congrats !!! Honeybuns and I got married last year, but since I didn't have the money to give a banquet (my family's all dead), so we just did the courthouse ceremony. His family all got together and took lots of outdoor locations photo shoots and we just did a family dinner. So I'm so happy when I see people having a nice chinese wedding banquet :-) Enjoy yourself and make sure you eat at your own wedding banquet :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you, tenjo. Congratulation to you, too!
I know! Wedding is SUPER expensive.
Honestly, I don't even know if we can afford it.
I'm hoping to pay for part of it with the red envelope money we will receive. :-P
I read the previous entry and thought this one was my favorite but you already crossed it off your list. Then this happens and i guess it was so meant to be. i checked out their website and the food looks to die for and the presentation is so pretty too. Congrats again and wish you the best!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Cat!
I have been looking for a place for my own wedding banquet. Your blog is a life saver! Can you post pics of your banquet? I'm so excited to see how it all turned out! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI will have lots of pictures soon.
I didn't take any picture on my own at the banquet.
Too busy to do that. I still need to get the photos from our photographer.
