Grandma P's 100th Birthday

It was Dr. P's grandma's 100th birthday last Sunday. 100th birthday! 100TH BIRTHDAY!!!! I don't think I've known anyone who is 100 years old before I met Grandma P. The birthday party was held at Uncle P's house. Dr. P has a really big family with 4 generations all together at one time.  It was a really great birthday party with a lovely family and delicious food.

There were about 50 people at the party.  Every table at Uncle P's house was covered with food.  Some were catered, and some were prepared by the aunties.

The must-have at any Korean party, kimchi.  This kimchi had a stinky fishy smell to it, but it tasted so good.  Dr. P said this was equivalent to Chinese stinky tofu.  The spicy mushroom banchan dish was also very good.

Chinese style appetizer, braised beef slices, pork slices, and jellyfish salad.

Lots of sushi.

Lots of crab rolls.

The eel tasted fishy though.  I think it would taste better with some of that sweet eel sauce.

Scallop and red pepper kabob didn't have much flavor.  The scallop was really fresh.  We found out that kimchi and scallop went surprisingly well together.

Yum!  Peking duck!

The spring rolls were made with lettuce, shrimp, and duck meat.  Dipping sauce was spicy wasabi sauce.

Stir-fried seafood was soooooo good.

Braised beef and chicken wings.  We love the rosemary chicken wings.

Fish and mushroom with egg battered.

This spicy cold noodle tasted Korean.  I think it was made with the Korean red chili paste.  It was great.

Rice with red bean.

Dessert + fruit table.  I love those Korean mochi balls with red bean paste in the middle.

After eating way too much for dinner, it was cake time.  Uncle P bought one regular cake with cream, and one Korean style rice cake.  The Korean writing on the cake read "happy 100 years".  I had a little piece of the cake, and it tasted just like rice cake (like the sliced kind of rice cake in soup).  The cake wasn't really sweet at all.  Pretty good.

Dr. P's cousin Cindy is a professional face painter.  (You can contact Cindy and book her for your special event at Up Up and Away Face Paint.) After dinner, we had some face painting fun.  Dr. P got Mike Tyson on one side of his face, and grandma P didn't like that side at all.  She made a funny face with a frown when she saw it.

Grandma P (and me too) liked the dragon side better.

Lucine got a pretty butterfly.

Lauren got a cute girly skull.  Aunties all got pretty flowers on their arms.

I had a lot of fun at the birthday party.  It was really nice meeting everyone in Dr. P's family.  I was really nervous about meeting grandma P for the first time.  Even though we had a language barrier so we didn't talk much, but grandma gave me a big smile when we met.  Happy 100th birthday, Grandma P!!

  2. WOW!!!

  5. Happy 100th Birthday to Grandma P! Wish her a lot more years of happy living!

Maybe since the kimchi is the equivalent to stinky tofu you will get Dr. P to try stinky tofu soon :). The sushi looks so pretty and colorful. Love these big types of platters!

That's what I said! If he can eat stinky kimchi, why can't he eat stinky tofu?
haha.... but that kimchi sure is tasty. Dr. P told me it smells fishy because they added those tiny baby shrimp in it.
