Ever since I read about The Veggie Grill on Wen's blog, I've been wanting to try their portebello mushroom burger.  I kind of mentioned it to Dr. P, but he wasn't too enthusiastic about it.  I didn't think a meat eater like him would be too interested in trying a vegetarian place.  But one night when Dr. P had to work late, he texted me and asked if I would like to meet him at The Veggie Grill for dinner.  He told me his co-workers also recommended this place to him.  So he finally decided to give it a try.

The Veggie Grill is right across the street from UC Irvine, right next to Trader Joe's.

We ordered our food at the counter, sat down with a number stand, and waited for our food.

Tomato & Basil Soup ($2.95)
Served with herb toasted crisps

Dr. P was in the mood for soup.  It was a Monday, and their soup that day was Tomato & Basil Soup.  I could really taste the fresh tomato in the soup.

Papa's Portobello ($8.50) / Sweetheart Fries ($2.25)
Grilled portobello mushroom, chopped tomato, basil & garlic pomodoro, caramelized onion, pesto, chipotle ranch. onion, avocado, spicy vegan meyo.  Served on a wheat bun with a side.

I got the Papa's Portobello, which is a portebello mushroom burger.  The mushroom was super juicy and tasted meaty.  The caramelized onion was sweet.  We love the chipotle ranch, avocado, and spicy vegan meyo.  This burger was so delicious.  The burger also came with a side of cole slaw or chili.  But I opted to substitute it with Sweetheart Fries for an extra charge.  The sweet potato fries was great, but with the spicy meyo, it was the best!

Bayou Chickin' ($8.95) / Chili
Chillin' chickin', lightly blackened with cajun spices, lettuce, tomato, red onion, avocado, spicy vegan meyo.  Served on a wheat bun with a side.

The counter girl recommended Bayou Chickin' to Dr. P.  The chicken was made with soy, but Dr. P thought it tasted pretty similar to chicken.  The Cajun spices was spicy!  This burger was full of flavor.  We didn't feel like we were eating vegetarian food at all.  The chili was also spicy and tasty.

Dr. P's conclusion after visiting The Veggie Grill was "I can be a vegetarian any day if I can eat at The Veggie Grill or Indian vegetarian food."  I agree!
