[Anaheim] [German] Jagerhaus Restaurant

Jagerhaus Restaurant

When I was little, my parents always took us to German restaurants in Taiwan.  Our favorite thing to have was German pork hock with sauerkraut.  I have never been to a German restaurant in United States.  When Mr. E suggested to have German food for lunch, I got really excited.

Jagerhaus Restaurant is located in Anaheim.  I don't even know how to pronounce the name of the restaurant.  Ya-Ger-Hows?

As soon as we walked in the door, we saw the wall was covered with articles from newspaper/magazines and awards.

While we were waiting for seats, Dr. P and I took a picture.  Not related to the food at all, but I like this picture.  @^_^@

We were seated in about 10 minutes.  The restaurant has an "old school" feel to it.

Spaten Lager Beer ($15.95/pitcher)

We started the meal with a pitcher of Spaten Lager Beer.  The beer was refreshing and light.

Weltenburg Dark Beer ($15.95/pitcher)

Then moved on to a heavier Weltenburg Dark Beer.  The beer had a really strong taste.  The boys liked it, but I didn't.

Bread

The rolls were good, but some of the dark rolls didn't rise fully, and it was hard.

Baby Back Ribs German Style ($15.95)

I was really looking forward to have some German Pork Hock.  What?  They don't have that on the menu?  How can they not have pork hock at a German restaurant?  Oh well, I guess we had order something else then.  Dr. P and I love ribs.  We decided to try Baby Back Ribs German Style.  The ribs were braised and topped with sauerkraut.  The ribs were really tender, but the sauerkraut was super sour.  I liked the meat, but didn't like the sour taste at all.

German Potato Salad

We got to pick a side dish with the ribs.  German Potato Salad sounded good, but it didn't taste that good.  It was, again, too sour for my taste.  I think they added sauerkraut to the potato salad, too.

Paprika Schnitzel ($16.95)
Pan Fried Pork Steak, Paprika Sauce, Fresh Red & Green Pepper, with Spatzle (German Noodle)

Paprika Schnitzel was recommended by the waiter.  It was pretty good.  The pan fried pork steak was really tender, and we liked the flavor of the paprika sauce.  With this dish, we got to pick 2 side orders.  The Spatzle (German noodle) came on the plate.  The thick pasta tasted great with the slightly spicy paprika sauce.

German Sauerkraut

Another side dish we picked was German Sauerkraut.  We didn't even touch this.  Too sour!

Goulash Soup ($3.95)

The rest of the dishes were ordered by our friends.  I thought Goulash Soup was tomato soup when I saw it.  I had a sip.  It tasted a little like tomato soup, but not really.  I think there was paprika in it?

Buffalo Wings ($4.95) / Fresh Carrots

I didn't try the Buffalo Wings.  It looked.... dry.

Bratwurst Dinner (2) ($10.95)
with Cucumber Salad and German Sauerkraut

I didn't try the Bratwurst sausage, either.

Pork Tenderloin ($17.95)
Mushrooms, Creme Sauce, with German Potato Salad

Pork Tenderloin was the same pan fried pork steak as our entree, but it came with a different sauce.  The mushroom creme sauce was really good.  I like this sauce even better than our paprika sauce.  I think the German noodle would go great with the sauce, too.

Veal Steak Swiss Style ($18.95)
with Spatzle (German Noodle)

Veal Steak Swiss Style was Dr. P's favorite dish.  The veal was tender, and it was even better with the tomato and Swiss cheese on top.

Grilled Elk ($19.95)
with Spatzle (German Noodle)

I had a bite of the Grilled Elk.  It tasted like steak.  It was the first time I've tried elk.

Toast Duck with Plum Sauce ($19.95)
with Creamed Spinach

Toast Duck with Plum Sauce was a popular dish.  The duck was pretty good, but the plum sauce was really sweet.  Creamed Spinach was watery, but still tasty.

Liver, Onion and Bacon ($11.95)

Liver, Onion and Bacon was an offer on their daily special menu.  The liver was beef liver.  Dr. P didn't like it. Wen didn't like it.  But I LOVE it!  This was my favorite dish!  I thought it tasted like pork liver, which I also love.  Most people didn't like the liver, but like the baked crispy bacon a lot.

Potato Pancake (two) ($3.95)

A side order of Potato Pancake came with some apple sauce.  Didn't get to try this.

We were all way too full to have dessert.

Our waiter was very accommodating and separated our check for us.  I like most of the dishes, just not the sour ones.  But I was still a little disappointed that they don't have German pork hock.  Does anyone know a German restaurant that have German Pork Hock on the menu?
