[San Gabriel] [Chinese] Kingburg Kitchen

I read about Kingburg Kitchen on Pepsi Monster's blog.  I didn't know about this restaurant even though I pass by it all the time.  Pepsi Monster raved about the food and made me want to try it right away.  So I took my mom and brother there for lunch.

Kingburg Kitchen by you.

Kinburg Kitchen is located at the corner El Pollo Loco plaza across from Golden Deli plaza.

Menu @ Kingburg Kitchen by you.

They serve dumplings, noodle, and buns.  The Taiwanese style fried bun is the item that made me really want to try this place.

Pickled Cabbage @ Kingburg Kitchen by you.
泡菜 Pickled Cabbage

After we sat down, the friendly waitress brought the menu and overly sweet pickled cabbage.  The waitress was friendly alright, but she was also friendly pushy.  After we ordered more than enough food, she still try to push us to order even more food.  "Do you also want an order of xxx dumpling?  It's really good.  No?  Then do you want to try an order of xxx buns?  We just made it fresh earlier.  No, too much food?  Then why don't you buy xxx to take http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com?  We also sell frozen dumplings to take http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.  One order of xxx dumplings, ok?  No?  How about one order of frozen xxx buns?"  I find this selling tactic very annoying.  Also since they boasted about their Taiwanese style fried bun, I was expecting this place to be a Taiwanese restaurant.  But it wasn't.  It was mainly China style with mainly China waitress.

Whole Wheat Bun @ Kingburg Kitchen by you.
全麥養生饅頭 Whole Wheat Bun ($1.75)

The whole wheat bun was one of the item that the waitress was trying to sell.  My mom gave in and ordered one.  The waitress said, "Ok.  I'll make one for you using microwave right now and pack the other one frozen for you to take http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.  It tastes better if you steam it at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com."  So I assume one order has 2 buns since my mom clearly only ordered 1.  But later when I checked the bill, we found out the waitress actually gave us 2 orders.  Now that was just wrong.  To me, that was cheating your customer.  Back to the food, the whole wheat bun was tasty.  It had raisins, sunflower seeds and walnut with a little bit sweetness.

Beef Noodle in Spicy Soup @ Kingburg Kitchen by you.
牛肉湯麵 Beef Noodle in Spicy Soup ($6.50)

Kingburg has really good combo deal.  Any noodle plus 5 dumplings combo for $6.00.  If you want fish or the pork/sea cucumber/shrimp dumplings, then it's $7.00.  Since noodle is $6.50, it's actually cheaper to order a combo than order the noodle alone.  My brother got the beef noodle.  The broth was a bit spicy.  The noodle wasn't bad, but there was nothing too special about it.

土雞湯麵 Noodle in Mushroom Chicken Soup ($6.50)

Mom and I shared the chicken soup noodle.  I really like the clear broth.  Rich mushroom and chicken flavor, but very light.

Dumplings @ Kingburg Kitchen by you.
Dumplings

2 orders of combo.  So I had 10 dumplings total.

Sole Fish with Leeks Boiled Dumpling @ Kingburg Kitchen by you.
龍利水餃 Sole Fish with Leeks Boiled Dumpling

The fish dumpling was pretty good.  It was a huge dumpling full of filling.

Pork and Chinese Cabbage Dumplings @ Kingburg Kitchen by you.
白菜水餃 Pork and Chinese Cabbage Dumplings

Pork and cabbage dumpling was quite good as well.  My brother liked this one a lot.

Fried Buns @ Kingburg Kitchen by you.
生煎包 Fried Buns

One order of fried buns has 6 of them.  It was about $8 per order.  A little pricey in my opinion.  But I was really craving for Taiwanese fried buns so we ordered 2.

Pork, Sea Cucumber, Shrimp Fried Buns @ Kingburg Kitchen by you.
三鮮生煎包 Pork, Sea Cucumber, Shrimp Fried Buns ($8.00)

I didn't think I tasted any sea cucumber nor shrimp in this "3 items" bun.  But I did see very very very tiny pieces of sea cucumber and shrimp mixing in with the pork.  But this tasted more like pork bun.  I took a few bite and thought "there's nothing Taiwanese about this bun".  I really don't know how they can call this Taiwanese fried bun because it tasted nothing like the fried buns I had in Taiwan.  The taste was different.  The dough of the bun was way off.  Just because they fried the bun on both sides like how Taiwanese do their fried bun, does not make this a Taiwanese style fried bun.  The bun wasn't bad (not that great either).  But it was just false advertisement.

Vegetarian Fried Bun @ Kingburg Kitchen by you.
素生煎包 Vegetarian Fried Bun ($6.50)

I like the vegetarian fried bun better than the 3 items fried bun.  It had tons of tofu, mushroom and green veggies.

Bill @ Kingburg Kitchen by you.

My mom thought this place was just ok.  No desire to come back again.  My brother thought the combo was a great deal and probably will be back with his friends.  I thought the dumplings were good and I like the chicken soup.  But I really dislike the service here and the Taiwanese fried bun was a scam.  Since I feel cheated when the waitress added an extra order of bun for us, I will never go back to this restaurant again.

  1. Hey Eileen,

Thanks for the shoutout! It's a bummer that they upsell you on some stuffs and then added extra charges. That would turned me off considering I went there a few time and never had that problem. I always ordered the noodle and dumpling combo. If she starts to ask me to order things to go, I'll be pissed for sure.

Funny thing is, a lot of people thought that 101 Noodle Express and Noodle House at Aracadia (RIP) both have that similar problems because the waitress seemed interested to tell people on how they like to eat.

Sorry about hearing you getting hassled. Hope you better luck at your next adventure!

Pepsi Monster~~~~ Thank you so much for your blog for me to find more delicious restaurants to go to.
I do like the dumplings at Kingburg, but the service was a big turnoff.
I think the waitress doesn't push too much for "young" people like us.
She was totally targeting at my mom when we were there.
I had problem with service at 101 Noodle Express as well.
That's why even though I love their beef roll, I've never gone back again.
Sometimes the service is more important than the food to bring the customers back.
I'm looking forward to trying more restaurants from your blog! ^^

  2. Hi Eileen,

Yah, I didn't like the pushy service when I went as well (when it first opened up). Also they use too much MSG for me, and I thought their Dumplings and Buns were average at best. Hope all is well! :)

They did that to you, too? I hope restaurant staffs know what a big turnoff the pushy service is.
I can never taste MSG. I only know when I get really thirsty after a meal. I don't like MSG either.

  3. Hey Eileen - This place has been on my list for a while now. After looking at your photos we'll definitely have to check it out....

The food is not bad. But I just don't like the service there... ><

  4. I have been checking out your website for a while now. Very informative, love reading everything. Do you however have any issues with the mainlanders? I would hope that these political views wouldn't be contaminating an otherwise very entertaining website.

Please don't get me wrong, Sean. There's nothing political here.
And I absolutely have nothing against mainland Chinese.
I am simply trying to say that this is not a Taiwanese restaurant as they advertised.
It's run by mainland Chinese and thd food taste like mainland Chinese style food.

  5. I think Eileen is not against any mainlander at all, she just point out if it is not Taiwaness food, then do not do false advertisement.

Thank you, Jessica. That's exactly what I was trying to say. ^^

  6. I go to that plaza often, I didn't know about this place either. As much as I fear of the pushy services, I will still give it go. The combo is a good deal.

Yeah, the combo is a great deal. Hope you'll have a better experience there.

  7. Hey Eileen. I'm sorry you had a bad experience there in terms of service. I think at Kingburg, the owner is actually Taiwanese, but the server and the cook are from Shandong in China.

Now, I've been here way too many times, almost 2-3 times a week, and I ONLY get the combos. When I come with friends, I might add the pan fried dumplings, but I think the waitress thinks I'm a lost cause and stop pushing stuff to me. I was pushed various "bao" and "man tou" at first, but I just want the combo! LOL. I hope you'll try here again, as I think it's one of the best deal in town.

    -Danny

Yeah I think the combo is a great deal.
But just felt that I can get better food and better service elsewhere.

  8. Hi Eileen! wow, very extensive blog. Anyways, i really like those pan fried bao, but then again I'm not chinese and I haven't been eating that stuff for very long.

Their pan fried bao was good.
But just not the same as the Taiwanese bao I had in Taiwan.
In Taiwan, you can get 10 of those baos for $2 and they are super delicious!
Ahhh how I miss the cheap good eats in Taiwan....

  9. Hey Eileen,

I got the grill buns to go. since my gf was craving for it, but when we opened the box...it was like char black.....it wasn't like golden color like your picture........I was kinda disappointed.....

I read in mmm-yoso's blog that they got RAW PORK in their buns.
I won't go back there again!

  10. It could be annoying to see someone not authentic sell "authentic food", but here in california, you see Mexican cook chinese food all the time...Not bug me anymore...As long as the food is good, I'll go back probably. The quality, on the other hand, would be a problem considering the fact that not all the chinese restaurant owners keep an eye on their cooking environment.

Yup, I see so many Mexican cooks in Chinese restaurant, cooking, making dumplings, cooking noodle...
If the food's good, I don't really mind, either. I mean, anyone can learn how to cook.
If you have an authentic recipe, the food probably will taste authentic.
But when you advertise a certain food, but it isn't actually how it tastes like, then that bothers me.
