Franklin Canyon Hike

Last year, Wen and I agreed that we would go hiking once a month.  So we went hiking ONCE in the entire year!  Well, it's a new year and we have new resolution.  This year, we are really going to go hiking once a month.

Our January destination was Franklin Canyon Hike.  We went on the plant adventure guided hike.  The volunteered ranger was very knowledgeable about the plant and animal in the area.  We learned a lot of interesting information, but....  The hike was SO slow.  We probably only walked 1 mile for the 3 hour hike.  It wasn't really the "hike until you sweat like crazy and will lose 3 pounds the next day" kind of hike we were hoping for.

This was the first plant the ranger tried to introduce to us.  I did not really remember anything he said.  But I did asked "can you eat it?"  Yes, I am ALWAYS thinking about eating.

We spend a good 15 minutes looking at his little guy.  I wonder if you can eat it.  haha just kidding!

This is some kind of plant with poisonous seed.  The seeds look like beans.

Ahhh.... food.  I mean... mushroom.  A lot of the mushroom in the wild are poisonous though.

This is wild cucumber with cute little white cucumber flower.

I don't remember what this plant is.  But it looks like tiny grapes, no?

Those scary looking plants are called Witch's Hair.  I've never seen it before.  I wouldn't want to fall into it and get caught in the web.

This tree makes it feel like fall.  Wait, isn't it winter right now?

Pretty lake.

And lots of ducks.  I thought the ducks are cute, but Dr. P said the ducks made him hungry.  Wen's son Jonathan must be really hungry.  Because the ranger picked up some dry flat long curly grass to tell us what kind plant it is, and Jonathan said, "that looks like BACON.  Mmmmm.... bacon.  I'm hungry."

During the entire hike, the 5 of us could not stop thinking about food food food.  It was a fun hike, but I probably won't do the tour again.  When I go hiking, I want to sweat.  But if you like an easy and relaxing hike, Franklin Canyon in Beverly Hills is a great place to go. You can find more information and activities here.
