My dad told me he saw Addictive's commercial on TV and thought the new hot pot restaurant looks pretty good.  So last Saturday night Dr. P and I went to check it out.  Afterward I had to tell my dad not to waste time and money to try this place.

The small hot pot restaurant is located in a big plaza.  It's not easy to see from the street.  Just look for the El Pollo Loco plaza.

The restaurant is small.  It's right next door to a Quickly with a door connecting the two stores.  In fact, there was only ONE waiter working at both Addictive and Quickly earlier that evening.  Our waiter was running back and forth to take our order, making boba tea, bring out the food, go back to Quickly to make boba tea, etc.  So of course, the service was EXTREMELY slow even though the restaurant was empty.

The special at this restaurant is the Benz pot.  Instead of the two-sided pot from most hot pot restaurants, they have 3-parts pot.  There are 6 options for the soup base.

Their one page menu doesn't offer as much options as other restaurants.  And their price is expensive.  Everything cost $1 or $2 more.

I do like their condiments table.  Lots of different choices to make your own sauce.  My favorite dipping sauce for hot pot is very simple.  Garlic, green onion, cilantro, vinegar and sesame oil.

賓士鍋 Benz Pot ($4.50/person): 味增 Miso / 蔬菜 Vegetable / 麻辣 Spicy

We ordered Benz pot with herb, vegetable and spicy soup base.  We patiently waited for at least 20 minutes for the busy waiter to bring the pot to our table.  And he mistakenly gave us miso soup base instead of the herb one that we ordered.  He politely apologized and took the pot back.

So we waited for the waiter to go back to Quickly and made few more drinks before he brought the pot back to us.  There went another 10 minutes.  Then we had to wait for the soup to boil.  By the time we started eating, it was already 45 minutes since we sat down at the restaurant.  The spicy soup was our favorite.  I like the slightly sweet herb soup base.  Vegetable soup tasted bland and probably had lots of MSG.

Beef @ Addictive by you.
特級牛肉 Beef ($9.50)

A plate of beef is almost $10.  I think that's just way overpriced.  The beef was good, but I'm sure it doesn't cost that much at elsewhere.

Intestine @ Addictive by you.
大腸 Intestine ($5.25)

I had to order intestine when eating hot pot.  I'm so glad Dr. P gradually started liking intestine.

Fresh Shrimp Ball @ Addictive by you.
新鮮手工蝦丸 Fresh Shrimp Ball ($4.80)

The shrimp balls were alright.  Not as good as the ones from Lu Gi though.  We waited for maybe 30 minutes for those shrimp balls.

Fresh Oyster Mushroom @ Addictive by you.
杏鮑菇 Fresh Oyster Mushroom ($3.50)

Oyster mushroom was good.  But I didn't like how they sliced it into thin strips.

Large Glass Noodle @ Addictive by you.
Q粉 Large Glass Noodle ($2.25)

We cooked large glass noodle at last attampt to get full from it.

Bill @ Addictive by you.

We didn't order that much because the food was so expensive and we don't want to go over budget.  The food wasn't bad, but definitely not as good as Lu Gi.  Service was way too slow.  Even later when two more waitresses showed up, it was still slow.  From the time we asked to packed the leftover food to go, get the check, to walking out the door probably took another 15 minutes.  The waitstaffs were really polite and friendly though.

I don't think I'd come back here again.  If I want hot pot, I much rather go to Lu Gi.  Dr. P also thought Lu Gi was better than here.

  2. Yeah Lu Gi's regular beef only costs like $5 a plate, and it's already pretty good.

I know! I can eat twice as much food at Lu Gi for the same price.

  5. Monterey Park got a hot pot restaurant called 可利亞, which I think is pretty good. Maybe you could try that one.

I went to that restaurant a long time ago. I didn't think the food was expressive but it was so long ago.
Maybe I ought to give it another try. We used to go to 可利亞 in Taiwan when I was little. Ahhh memory!

  7. Hi Eileen,

Thanks for the warning about this place. I've been looking out for a good Chinese Hot Pot place for a while now.

Lu Gi! You gotta try Lu Gi!
I think it's the best Taiwanese style spicy hot pot restaurant in LA.
