[Irvine] [Taiwanese] 余姐清粥小吃 Yu's Garden

I had class all day yesterday and didn't come http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com until 9pm.  Dr. P came http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com from work around the same time.  We were both tired and hungry.  Dr. P suggested us to go to Yu's Garden for some porridge.  He called and found out they open till 11pm daily.  Great!  So we headed over for some late night dinner.

余姐珍珠奶茶 Yu's Tapioca Milk Tea ($2.99 Buy 1 Get 1 Free)

At first we wanted to eat at the restaurant.  But then we saw that to-go price is much cheaper, and opted to eat at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com instead.  They also have a buy 1 get 1 free deal for their drinks.  We ordered 2 boba milk tea, but they only had enough boba to make one.  So they gave us grass jelly in the other milk tea.  Their drink was pretty good.  It's actually cheaper than Tapioca Express next door.

三菜便當 Three Items Combo ($6.25)

If you eat in the restaurant, they charge $1.25 per person for rice or porridge.  But if you get to-go, then it's free.  We got the food for to-go, and saved money on rice and tips.  The combo supposed to come with soup, but they didn't give us soup.  Dr. P picked beef, three cup chicken, and cucumber.  He thought the beef was bland, chicken was too sweet, and cucumber was too vinegary.  He didn't like anything he ordered.

I ordered meatballs (lion's head), stewed pork + egg, and mustard greens.  Dr. P and I both liked my box of food better.  Meatball was soft and flavorful.  I thought Dr. P wouldn't like the Mustard Green because it tasted a little bitter, but he ended up loving it.

I like the stewed pork a lot.  The meat was tender, and I love the fatty part even more.  The stewed egg was flavorful, too.  But just as Dr. P and I were both praising the food, all of a sudden....

Dr. P picked up this white thing in the mustard greens with his chopsticks.  "What is this?"  he asked.  He put it down on the napkin, and poked a little with the chopsticks.  He thought it was garlic or ginger or something.  But we took a closer look, and it was a maggot looking worm!  OMG!  IT WAS A MAGGOT WORM!  Ewwww.... gross!!!!  We were so traumatized that we threw out the food, and washed the chopsticks for like 20 times.

Dr. P was glad that he actually saw the worm and didn't accidentally eat it.  I guess that showed Yu's Garden doesn't clean their vegetable before cooking.  That's just too bad.  We actually liked the food, and planned to return before we found the worm in our food.  Now we are permanently scarred, and probably will never go back again!

  1. Sorry to read about the worm. Glad I didn't try that restaurant while living around Irvine. (Friends recommended it though.) On the same note, you may also want to stay away from the Asian pears at Trader Joes. My husband found "HALF" a worm inside.

OMG! Yuck! Half a worm? I think that's even scarier to find 1/2 worm than a whole worm.

  5. u guy should just skip out on the veggie next time =P or think of the worm as extra protein =P

    The meat dishes were great.
But I don't think Dr. P will ever go back to Yu's with me again.

  8. Wow, that is very unusual! I just got a fly in my water the past weekend in a restaurant. Luckily I didn't drink it through the straw, and the waiter immediately gave me a new glass after I found out.

Sad to see such a bug with so much good food! The tapioca pearl amount could have been more for my liking but you did say they were running out.

    Fly in water? Yuck!
Good you didn't drink through straw.

  10. Hello Eileen,

Greetings from Canada and this is absolutely nonsense and I bet you will never go back to Yu's Garden. Have a nice weekend.

    Vincent

It's very unlikely that we'll ever go back to Yu's Garden.
