[Irvine] [Taiwanese] 好年春 Nice Time Deli

Nice Time Deli
好年春

Irvine, CA 92604

Both Dr. P and I had major hangover the day after the crazy birthday party at Black Cherry Garden.  We finally crawled out of bed in the early afternoon.  With throbbing headache, we were in the mood for some soupy noodle.  We drove over to the 99 Ranch Plaza, walked around, and decided to go into Nice Time Deli.

排骨飯 Pork Chop Rice ($6.45)

Dr. P wanted a bowl of beef noodle soup.  We couldn't find it on the menu.  We asked the waitress, and she told us they don't have beef soup noodle.  What?  What kind of Taiwanese eatery doesn't have beef noodle soup?  We were disappointed.  But Dr. P settled for the Pork Chop Rice.  This seemed to be the most popular item because almost every table ordered at least one pork chop rice.  When the waitress put the plate down on the table, I thought it smelt really really good.  It smelt like the Taiwanese popcorn chicken.  And it was a really big piece of pork chop.

Under the pork chop, there were some tofu, bok choy, and minced meat over the rice.  Dr. P took a bite of the pork chop, and immediately said, "yuck!  I don't like it.  It's way too sweet."  I took a bite.  Yup, it was definitely sweet.  Initially I kinda like the pork chop.  But after eating 2 or 3 pieces, I started getting sick of the sweet taste.  We didn't finish the pork chop rice, and I had the leftover for dinner.  It was grossly sweet.  Nope, we don't like the Pork Chop Rice at all.

四神湯 Four Gods Soup ($5.25)

Dr. P wanted to order a soup to go with his Pork Chop Rice.  I recommended the Four Gods Soup.  But when Dr. P ordered the soup, the waitress said, "No, you won't eat it.  It has pig stomach.  You won't like it."  Fine.  So Dr. P tried to ordered Meatball Soup (貢丸湯), but the waitress said they were out of meatballs.  Then Dr. P ordered Pickled Goose Soup (酸菜鵝肉湯), but they didn't have goose meat that day.  So Dr. P asked what is in their seafood soup.  The waitress answered "just regular seafood".  Hmmmm....  So we went back to where we started, and ordered the Four Gods Soup.  The soup was actually pretty good.  But the portion was so small.  It was a really really small bowl of soup for $5.25.  It was good, but not worth that price.

肉羹米粉 Pork Pottage with Rice Noodle ($6.25)

This was the reason I wanted to go to Nice Time Deli.  I was craving for Pork Pottage with Rice Noodle for some reason.  When I saw this bowl of noodle, I thought the soup didn't have the right color.  It looked really water down.

It actually tasted a little better than it looked.  I added some vinegar, white pepper, and chili sauce, then it tasted alright.  I like the rice noodle, but didn't like their pork.  It wasn't the best pork pottage, but it did served my craving.

I don't really like Nice Time Deli too much, but Dr. P hates it.  He said he'll never come back again.  Let's just say, if we never come back here again, I won't miss it at all.

  3. I was planning on checking out Nice Time Deli next time I'm in Irvine, but now seeing your review I think I'll pass. No beef noodle soup?? and the pork pottage with rice noodle really does not look the right color at all.
Did you see stinky tofu on the menu? I remember reading reviews that they had good stinky tofu.

Yeah I saw some people ordered fried stinky tofu.
But I couldn't smell anything. I guess it wasn't that stinky.
I prefer my stinky tofu a little bit more stinky. You?

  6. Most people I know love this place.
    This post is a bias...

But we are not most people you know.
And we don't like this place.
That does not make this post a bias. It's just our opinion.
    這位路人你以前還笑我說連QQ跟小美都要寫
    現在又來嗆聲,但是好年春跟QQ和小美等級也差不多
    你這麼在乎也挺好笑的

  7. haha, of course it is more expensive if comparing to the price in taiwan. But that is kinda unfair :P They do have some good stuff that I go to once in a while when I am craving for certain taiwanese "small eats". For example not too many places serve white cut goose meat that I know of, and also their 筒仔米糕 I think is pretty decent too. I also like to order Pork Chop Rice from the nice time deli at Rowland Heights !

I saw someone at next table ordered 筒仔米糕.
It looked pretty good. But somehow their pork chop rice and service were both disappointing.

  8. I visited there today and tried the pork chop rice. I am agreed with Eileen that it is a bit too sweet. I also tried the sa-cha rice noodle. It was very good!!

I like their sa-cha noodle so much better than the pork chop rice.
But the pork chop rice sure is a popular item at that restaurant.
