[Tustin] [Japanese] Tommy's Sushi & Japanese Restaurant

Tommy's Sushi & Japanese Restaurant
1051 E Main St
Tustin, CA 92780
(714) 544-5241

I have been craving for Tommy's Sushi's poki bowl for weeks.  Last night we finally went.  It was Thursday night, and the restaurant was about 90% full.

Poki Bowl ($11.00)

Ahhhh..... THE poki bowl!  I absolutely love the poki bowl at Tommy's Sushi.  Big chunks of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and octopus...  Cucumber, onion, avocado, and scallion....  Also tiny fish roes and crab salad.... I could taste the ponzu and sesame oil in the dressing.... all sitting on top of sushi rice.  It was a bowl of magic!  Love it love it love it!

Spicy Sauce

Don't forget to ask for the spicy sauce.  But be careful.  This spicy sauce is SUPER spicy!  Just a little bit goes a long way.  We like adding a little bit to the poki bowl.  I also like using it as a dip for other items, especially the fried sesame chicken.

Spanich Mackerel Sushi ($3.75) / Sea Urchin Sushi ($5.25) / Albacore Sushi ($3.50)

We ordered 3 sushi to share.  Albacore Sushi tasted creamy.  Sea Urchin Sushi wasn't good last night.  It didn't have that sweet sea urchin flavor, but a yucky sea taste.  Spanish Mackerel Sushi was the best one.  Very fresh.

Spicy Tuna Roll ($5.50) / Yellowtail & Onion Roll ($6.50)

The sashimi in Tommy's rolls were not chopped like the other sushi restaurants.  Spicy Tuna Roll had big chunks for tuna mixing with their spicy sauce.  It was good, but I thought we didn't really need to order this since we got tons of tuna with spicy sauce in the poki bowl.  The menu called it Yellowtail & "Onion" Roll, but we figured they probably meant scallion, and we were right.  Yellowtail + Scallion is such a good combination.  Big pieces of yellowtail mixing with crunchy scallion tasted so good.

Miso Soup

We also ordered a combination dinner to share.  The dinner set came with miso soup.

Fujiyama Combination Dinner ($12.95)
Sukiyaki/Tempura/Sesame Chicken

The dinner combination we ordered is called Fujiyama.  Besides miso soup, it also came with salad, rice, and a piece of orange.  This set included tempura, sesame chicken, and sukiyaki.  Their tempura was very good.  It was crunchy and not oily at all.  The tempura vegetables were string bean, sweet potato, zucchini, and carrot.  Sesame Chicken was very tender.  I like dipping it in the spicy sauce.

Sukiyaki was filled with sliced beef, onion, mushroom, cabbage, and tofu.  The broth was sweet and savory.  Love mixing it with rice.

A girl was celebrating her birthday at the sushi bar.  One of the sushi chefs took out this "unique" looking statue with a big... uh... "bar".

Then he grated Japanese mountain yam (山藥) over the "bar" to make oyster shooters for her. Japanese mountain yam has white, creamy, sticky juice. So... well.... you get the picture. It was pretty funny. Everybody was laughing like crazy.

Delicious dinner!  We really like Tommy's Sushi.  Definitely will return again soon!

  3. Looks like a good restaurant with very reasonably priced food :). I just had sukiyaki a few weeks ago and the sukiyaki itself was 16 bucks...
Xinyi, I think you can get a different profile pic by getting a Gravatar.

Ordering sukiyaki at Tommy's costs $10.
But ordering it as combo only costs $2 more. So we opted for the combo.
Yeah, the price is reasonable, and food is delicious. We like this place a lot.

  4. I am rather distressed to hear that the Uni was not up to par. Do you know where the urchin came from? It is well known around the world that Southern California Urchin is the best in the world. Perhaps this is not Cal. Uni? As I am an Urchin Diver, I would like nothing more than for the sushi vendors to know that local, fresh, live Urchins are available. http://www.catalinaop.com/, sells fresh daily sushi packs...or whole live.
California Red Sea Urchin...the sweetest, freshest, worlds best...right in your own back yard.

    Eat more sushi...Thanks Eileen!!

I love fresh and sweet uni!
Thank you for the info about Catalina Offshore Products.
I will definitely eat more sushi, Jeff!
