[Irvine] [Chinese] Asian Tapas

We were in the mood for Chinese noodle soup, but wanted to try something other than A&J.  We drove to the other side of Irvine to try this new restaurant, Asian Tapas.

Asian Tapas is in the same plaza as The Counter.  I didn't know there's one in Irvine.  I love the burger there!  If there weren't that many people waiting outside of The Counter, we might just change my mind to go there instead.

The restaurant has a big open kitchen.  Even though there weren't that busy with dine-in customers, the kitchen staff was busy working.  I think they get more take out orders.

紅油炒手 Wonton in Spicy Red Chili Oil (8) ($4.49)

Since this restaurant is called Asian Tapas, we ordered some Asian tapas to try.  We started with Wonton in Spicy Red Chili Oil.  The sauce they used was thick garlic soy sauce with spicy chili oil.  I thought it was pretty good, but Dr. P thought it was too salty.

攪和攪和 Bean Curd and Shredded Beef in Spicy Sauce ($3.99)

We also tried the Bean Curd and Shredded Beef in Spicy Sauce.  Those weren't as good as the real 攪和攪和 from Dai Ho Kitchen (大和滷味).

紅燒牛肉麵 Beef Noodle Soup ($6.49)

Beef Noodle Soup's noodle was really good.  It tasted like hand-made noodle.  Beef and tendon was really soft and tender, too.  The only problem was the broth was salty, very salty.  It was so salty that we couldn't drink the soup.  We took the leftover http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com and added water to it, and the soup tasted much better.  We both thought A&J's beef noodle soup tasted better.

海南雞飯 Hainan Chicken with Rice ($8.99)

Hainan Chicken with Rice wasn't bad.  But maybe because I am so used to Savoy's Hainan Chicken Rice, I couldn't help to compare Asian Tapa's to Savoy's.  Savoy's has much better version because the chicken was meatier, tenderer, and tasted better.  The portion at Savoy's was much bigger, too.  And I love the garlic chili sauce from Savoy's.  At Asian Tapas, they only gave us one ginger sauce, and it wasn't all that good.  One thing I like though was that they gave us a lot of green veggies with the dish.  This Hainan Chicken Rice tasted pretty good, but as I said before, I was just comparing it to Savoy's, and I prefer Savoy's more.

We thought the food at Asian Tapas wasn't bad, but it was just ok.  Service was really good though.  The waitresses were really polite and friendly.  I wouldn't mind returning again to try more of their dishes.  Maybe next time we'll order some better items?
