NCL Mexican Riviera Cruise Day 1: Market Cafe Lunch

We were super hungry after we got on the ship and headed straight to the buffet on deck 12 for the lunch buffet.

The buffet was really busy.  We patiently waited in line to get our food.

Dr. P's plate.  The buffet offered the usual buffet food.  Everything looked just alright.  Everything tasted just alright.  It wasn't bad, just nothing too special about it.

This was my plate.  See how I controlled myself not to get too much food?  Because it was already 3pm and we were about to eat dinner in a few hours.  Well, also because nothing really looked too good at the buffet.  This was the only meal we had at the buffet (not counting breakfast though).

The pasta was probably the best thing at the buffet.  You pick the pasta and the sauce, then the chef makes it for you right there.  We got spaghetti with bolognese sauce.  It was really good.

This was the Asian version of the personalized pasta.  You pick the type of noodle and the meat and vegetables you want, then the chef cooks it in a broth for you.  This wasn't good.  Couldn't compare to the Italian pasta at all.  The broth tasted like instant noodle soup.  Noodle was undercooked.  No good at all.

Got two kinds of dessert.  Banana/chocolate cake was alright.  Dr. P liked the panna cotta because it was sugar free and wasn't sweet at all.  We also had some ice cream but didn't take picture.  I thought the ice cream was much better than the cake.

Our first meal on the ship was a bit disappointed.  But we didn't expect much from the buffet anyway.  We were really looking forward for the much nicer sit-down dinner.

  1. Looks alright...just alright...alright...

Yeah, it's more like a Hometown buffet type of food.

  3. TOO BAD FOR NCL.

I understand NCL is not a lux ship, so I don't expect all sorts of fancy'shmancy food. BUT, there's no excuse for the food to be "just okay".

I was 'this close' to booking NCL but there's just too many bad reviews about the food.

Would rather just stay in a nice resort for a week and go out to eat.

The food was great in the beginning, then it gradually got worse and worse as the day went on.
I've never been on a luxury cruise before so I couldn't really compare.
Yeah, I also hope the food was better.... well, the service, too.

  4. Why not eat in one of the MDRs for lunch..seems like maybe the quality of food would be better. The 1st. day we embarked the Star, we ate in Aqua, and the chilled banana soup was so yummy!

We got on the ship too late on the first day.
Only had 30 minutes to eat at the buffet before we had to do that emergency drill thing.
But rest of the trip, we ate at the MDRs for lunch.
You're right. Food was much much better there than the buffet.
