Thanks to Boiling Crab, I realized how much I love Cajun food.  When I saw the $20 for $40 deal on Groupon for Jack Shrimp, a Cajun seafood restaurant, I bought one right away.

Summerland Chardonnay ($14.00)

We visited on a Tuesday night.  Lucky us!  They have a 50% off any bottle of wine on Tuesday.  I got a bottle of  Chardonnay for half off the original price.  Iced cold crisp Chardonnay went very well with spicy seafood.

Bread

We were given a basket of bread with butter.  We tried not to eat the bread right then because we could dip it later in the spicy Jack Cajun sauce.

Hot Gulf Crab Dip ($8.00)
lump crab, select cheeses, spices, celery, lemon with creole french bread

Our waitress recommended Hot Gulf Crab Dip for appetizer.  It sounded good so we took her suggestion.  The crab dip was yummy!  Lots of crab meat, very cheesy, and delicious flavor.  The toasted french bread was great for dipping.

JACK Shrimp ($18.00)
shell on gulf shrimp in Jack's savory spicy sauce with french bread for dunking.

I ordered the famous JACK Shrimp.  I was somewhat expecting Boiling Crab kind of shrimp, and found out JACK Shrimp tasted completely different.  The sauce wasn't that spicy, and had a lot of rosemary (?) in it.  Also the sauce was very watery.  The shrimp itself didn't have much flavor.  Honestly, I was a little disappointed.  It wasn't bad, but just not what I expected.  Also I thought $18 for a little plate of shrimp like this was a bit expensive.  I probably won't order this again.  It's my personal preference.  I think I like the $8.99/pound shrimp at Boiling Crab much better.

Spicy Creole Pasta ($17.00)
andouille sausage, chicken, bell peppers, onions, and fire roasted tomatoes in a red pepper cream sauce, penne and parmesan cheese

Dr. P ordered Spicy Creole Pasta.  The pasta was much much better than the shrimp.  the red pepper cream sauce was delicious.  The leftover tasted even better the next day.

Mud Pie ($5.00)

I LOVE MUD PIE!  Who doesn't like a big piece of mocha ice cream drizzled with hot fudge chocolate?  Yum!

I like Jack Shrimp except the JACK Shrimp.  haha.... How ironic!  I would definitely come back again and try more of their other dishes.  Just no more JACK Shrimp for me.

  1. I've been meaning to try this place. There used to be a similar restaurant up in Marina Del Rey that I loved. But that shrimp portion does look small, especially for $18.

Yeah, portion was on the smaller side.
Also I didn't like the watery soupy sauce that much.
The pasta was really good though.
But since they are famous for their Jack Shrimp, you should still try it for yourself.
I know a lot of people like it. Just not me.... haha.

  2. I recently made a trip to New Orleans and hit up many of their landmark restaurants. The Jack shrimp reminded me of this extremely delicious and addicting dish called "BBQ Shrimp" (even though there is nothing BBQ about it) which we couldn't stop commenting how great the food was throughout the meal and the weeks after. Maybe Jack Shrimp is just a poor replication of that Cajun specialty. I wish I could find that dish in Cali.

An interesting thing I noticed was that the cooking style from Boiling Crab, like assorted seafood steamed with spice in a bag, couldn't really be found anywhere in New Orleans.

They called shrimp in soupy broth "BBQ" Shrimp? haha... how funny!
Maybe the shrimp was BBQ first before placing in broth???
I know Boiling Crab is owned by Vietnamese.
Maybe it's just Vietnamese invention of Cajun seafood? haha...

  3. Nope, no BBQing the shrimp before. I saw how they cooked it on Man Vs. Food on Travel Channel.

Why would they call it "BBQ"? Hmmm I wonder.
