My friend Wen told me about the $20 All You Can Eat sushi lunch special at Kobe Teppan & Sushi.  On the day we decided to go, I purposely didn't eat breakfast and went really really hungry.  (And later found out that was the wrong strategy.  Why do I always get full so fast when I am super hungry?)

Kobe Teppan & Sushi, just like its name stated, serves both Teppanyaki and sushi.  The restaurant is divided into two sides.  Their teppanyaki side was really popular during lunch hour.

Besides all you can eat, they also have the regular Japanese lunch special combo like Teriyaki chicken and tempura that sort of things.  To have all you can eat sushi, it is mandatory to sit at the sushi bar.  Our waitress told us about their policy of charging extra for leftover food before we ordered.

Hot Sake ($5.00)

Hot Sake was really tiny.  3 cups and it was gone.  Not really worth the money.

Miso Soup

Whenever we go to a Japanese restaurant, Dr. P always has to have a bowl of miso soup to start the meal.  Kobe's miso soup was pretty standard.

Baked Green Mussels

We shared some appetizers with our friends.  I thought baked green mussels were pretty good because I like fatty mayo on my food.

Sesame Chicken

Sesame Chicken tasted more Chinese than Japanese.  I kinda wanted a bowl of rice with it.

Aloha Roll / Spicy Scallop Sushi / Spicy Tuna Roll / Yellowtail Sushi / White Tuna Sushi / Salmon Sushi / Albacore Sushi

Sushi time!  The fish was fairly fresh.  They did gave us big piece of sashimi, but it was over a VERY big piece of sushi rice.  I felt like they were really trying to get us full with the rice.

Spicy Yellowtail Hand Roll / Red Clam Sushi

Spicy Yallowtail hand roll was pretty good.  But again, lots of rice.

Garlic Albacore Roll

All their rolls were huge.  Good there were 5 of us to share.  I like the garlicky sauce over the garlic albacore roll.

Oishi Roll

Oishi Roll was my favorite of that day.  It didn't have any rice!  I love the fresh and crunchy cucumber wrap.  This roll tasted so refreshing.

Spider Roll

This is a Chinese owned restaurant.  The waitress and sushi chefs were  all Chinese.  Even though I think I still prefer Japanese sushi chef, when the Chinese sushi chefs heard us speaking Chinese, he started giving us a lot of "special" dishes.  Spider Roll can only be ordered during dinner, which is slightly more expensive.  But the Chinese sushi chef decided to give us a plate anyway.  The soft-shelled crab was yummy.  I just wished they would put less rice in the roll.

Rock Shrimp Roll

Another special, Rock Shrimp Roll.  I LOVE it!  Did I mention I love mayo?

Popcorn Lobster Roll

Yet another special the Chinese sushi chef gave us, Popcorn lobster Roll.  This one was good, too ( I think).  At this point my stomach was about to pop.  I think it was filled with rice rice and rice.

We asked the waitress to split the bill to 2 people, 2 people, and 1 person.  So she split into 2 and 3 people.  Go figure!  Anyway, this place wasn't too bad, but it wasn't exactly good, either.  It's a pretty good deal for $20.  You can get really really full (with rice).  It's best to come with more people so you can share a variety of rolls and appetizers.  I still think Midori in Studio City has the best AYCE sushi!

  1. So glad to see you back on line!
You're right, the strategy isn't starving before going to an ayct. The better strategy is to eat a lot the night before to stretch out your stomach and go for a killer workout the hour before...
But honestly ayce is just not that great for grown women...

I used to LOVE AYCE. But the older I get, the less I enjoy it.
For some reason, I just can't eat that much anymore.
Now I prefer quality over quantity.
But I like your strategy. If I get to go AYCE again, I'll definitely try that method. :-)

  2. I enjoyed reading your honey moon series :) Very interesting seeing the experience you had in Costa Rica.

I loooooove sushi!!!! AYCE is my specialty for sushi. For everything else I get full too fast and then people say I am a waste of money. But for sushi! I can stuff myself for sure, haha. From the looks of your pictures, it certainly does look like you got WAY too much rice. They probably didn't want you eating all of their fish.... haha. That's no good.

I wish there's a AYCE sashimi place somewhere.
But they probably would go out of business pretty soon. haha...

  6. Yeah I've heard our Japanese AYCE is cheaper (on the west coast only though). Other things are probably about the same as the states.....(wish everything was cheaper lol)

New York has the most expensive food!
But everything is so good there.
Yeah, I really wish everything's cheaper.
