[West Covina] [Malaysian] 馬來檳城 Penang Malaysian Cuisine

Mom, sister and I went to see Avatar 3D in West Covina.  Love the movie!  I went online to search for a place for dinner in West Covina before going to the movie.  I found out that there is a Hong Kong Supermarket square in West Covina, and supposedly there are a lot of Asian restaurants in that plaza.

The plaza was big, with a big but empty parking lot.  There are a lot of stores and restaurants, but most of them were not even opened.  This plaza just looked and felt strange.  It was like a ghost plaza.... dark, cold, and deserted.  The few restaurants that were opened had no customers.  It was just sad.  Sister decided to try Malaysian food at Penang Malaysian Cuisine.

The restaurant was pretty big.  It felt even bigger since we were the only table there.  When we walked into the restaurant, all the lights were actually off.  They only had the lights at the door turned on.  Even the kitchen light was off.  I guess they weren't really expecting any business.

馬來凍奶茶 Malaysian Ice Tea ($2.50)

Sister ordered Malaysian Ice Tea.  She said it tasted just like very sweet milk tea.  She didn't like it.  Mom and I got water.  Their water had a weird smell.  We weren't sure it was from the water or the plastic cup that they used.

印度麵包 Roti Canai ($3.50)
It's the all-time favorite Malaysian crispy Indian style pancake. Served with curry chicken as dipping sauce.

The waitress suggested Roti Canai for appetizer.  It was my first time trying Roti Canai, and I like it!  The bread was flaky and crispy, a bit oily though.  I thought the bread would be more like a nann, but it was a lot thinner than the nann bread.  The curry was so good.  I could eat a bowl of rice with that curry.  There were 2 pieces of potatoes and a chicken wing in the curry.  I would order this appetizer when I go to Malaysian restaurant from now on.

海南雞飯 Hainanese Chicken ($6.50)
Chicken rice subtly flavored with steamed chicken and chef's special soy sauce.

We ordered 4 dishes because dad was waiting for us to bring some food http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com for him.  Hainanese Chicken was pretty good.  I like the sauce they used for the chicken.  The chicken oil rice is always delicious.

星洲炒米粉 Singapore Fried Mee Hoon ($6.95)
Singapore style stir fried rice noodles in special mild sauce with shrimp, bean sprouts, egg and Chinese cabbage.

Singapore Fried Mee Hoon didn't taste like the ones we had at Hong Kong restaurants before.  The Malaysian version used a thicker noodle with less curry flavor.  The noodle didn't taste too special when we first had it.  But the more we ate, the better it tasted.  The curry flavor was subtle, maybe that's why it took a few bites for this dish to stand out.  Both mom and sister thought this was their favorite dish of the night.

揚州炒飯 Young Chow Fried Rice ($6.95)

Young Chow Fried Rice tasted like your typical Chinese fried rice.  It was good, just nothing special about it.

咖哩麵 Kari Mee ($6.50)
Noodles served in a spicy lemon grass, coconut curry with shredded chicken, shrimp or yong tofu.

I wanted something hot and soupy because it was a really cold night.  I ordered Kari Mee, which is a curry chicken noodle soup.  I love the flavor of lemon grass, coconut milk, and curry.  Sister and I like the dish, but it was too spicy for mom's taste.  I like the soup, but it did got a bit heavy since the soup was very oily.

Food was pretty good here.  The price is very reasonable.  But I don't think this restaurant will survive long with business like that.  In fact, this whole plaza probably won't survive.  Even though the food was good, I don't think we'll go back to that plaza again.  The vibe there is just not good.  Maybe they don't have good Feng Shui there?

  2. I love roti canai and try to order it every time when I visit a Malaysian restaurant. Try it with sugar too- it's very good that way also!

Sugar? Just sprinkle sugar on the bread?

  3. Savoy is horrible. The best hainanese chicken rice closest to the real thing is up in SF.

    You don't like Savoy?
Well, SF is a little far. I still like Savoy's.
