Ji Rong Restaurant

Ji Rong Restaurant

Rosemead, CA 91770

It was my aunt Vivian's 60th birthday.  She picked one of her favorite Chinese restaurants, Ji Rong Restaurant, to celebrate the event.  Dr. P and I drove to Rosemead from Irvine on that Friday night for almost 2 hours.  I don't like traffic!  We got there about 40 minutes late.  So the pictures I took were all half-eaten dishes.  Sorry....

Five Flavor Combination ($18.98)

Ji Rong used to have a $130 banquet for 10 people.  No more!  Now they only offer a $250 banquet for 10 with pretty much similar dishes.  So my parents and aunt decided to order a la carte.  Five Flavor Combination is a cold appetizer platter.  There were braised beef, cold cut chicken, sliced pork, tofu skin, and cucumber.  Everything was pretty good.  But I thought $19 for this dish is a bit pricey.

Three Cup Chicken ($7.98)

Three Cup Chicken was pretty good, but it definitely needed more basil.

Beef Fillet Spicy Hot Pot ($11.98)

Dad knew that Dr. P love Szechuan spicy beef, and ordered the Beef Fillet Spicy Hot Pot for him.  The flavor of this dish wasn't the same as the spicy boiling beef (水煮牛肉) that we were used to.  It was spicy, but just tasted different.  My favorite thing in this dish was the black ear mushroom (木耳).

Lamb Spicy Hot Pot ($11.98)

Lamb Spicy Hot Pot was a good dish to eat with rice.  Tender sliced lamb in a hot pot with enoki mushroom and glass noodle.  I like it!

Sauteed Pork with Mushroom ($9.98)

I LOVE this dish!  Sauteed shredded pork with beech mushroom and cilantro.  I'm going to try to make this dish at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.

Lettuce Wrap Delight Roll ($10.98)

This was two dishes put together on one plate to give room for more dishes.  Shredded Pork Cabbage was a simple dish, but very tasty.  Lettuce Wrap Delight Roll was a very light dish.  It was actually cabbage roll with seafood inside.  I like dipping it in black vinegar (黑醋) for more flavor.

Fish Fillet with Basil ($11.98)

Fish Fillet with Basil was my aunt's favorite dish from Ji Rong.  She orders this dish every time.  The fish was soft, and the basil flavor was really tasty.

String Bean XO Sauce ($7.98)

String Bean with XO Sauce was addicting.  I just realized how much I like string bean.  I can eat it one after another until I finish the whole plate.

Extra Pancake ($3.00)

I love the Combination Vegetable Platter with Pancake.  I remember having this dish all the time in Taiwan when I was little.  We had a different name for this dish in Taiwan though.  It's called Combination Vegetable Wearing Hats I think people present the dish with the pancake on top of the vegetable, so it looks like the vegetables are wearing a hat?  haha....  The way to eat this dish is to spread some hoisin sauce on the pancake, then stuff it with vegetables, and wrap it like a burrito and enjoy.  The dish was made with bean sprout, glass noodle, egg, and cilantro.  Simple, but so good.

Shrimp Fried Rice ($6.58)

Too much food!  I didn't have the stomach to eat the fried rice.  It looked a little bland though.

Jing Dong Meat Pie ($4.98)

Another one I didn't get to try.  Jing Dong Meat Pie looked good.

Green Chive Turnover ($6.58)

Didn't try the Green Chive Turnover, either.  Dr. P had a piece, and said it was good.

Preserved Cabbage with Lamb Hot Pot ($11.98)

Preserved Cabbage with Lamb Hot Pot was already cold when we got there.  I am sure it would tasted much better when it was hot.

For 10 people with A LOT of leftover.  For a large group, eating Chinese is so much cheaper than going to American restaurants.

Taro Pudding Cake

My parents picked up a birthday cake at Cathy's Bakery (香夫人).  It was my aunt's favorite taro cake.

Taro paste in the middle, with pudding on top.  We all like Cathy's Bakery's cake because it's not too sweet.

Aunt Vivian with uncle and my cousins Steven and Angela.  My aunt doesn't look 60 at all.  My brother told my aunt she looks only 40 in Chinese.  Dr. P didn't know my brother said that and told my aunt she looks 35.  Then my brother was like... "oh yeah?  In that case, aunt Vivian, you look no a day order than 21!"  haha....

Happy birthday, aunt Vivian!

  1. Any ONE of these issues would have been enough for 1 day's worth of eating!

  2. That fish fillet with basil looks the most tempting to me. Mmm...I wished you had tried the meat pie though, since it looks really similar to something my mom makes.

Your mom knows how to make the meat pie?
Lucky you! I want to learn how to make it too!
