[Tustin] [Japanese] Tommy's Sushi & Japanese Restaurant

Tommy's Sushi & Japanese Restaurant
1051 E Main St
Tustin, CA 92780
(714) 544-5241

I saw a picture of the Poke Bowl from Tommy's Sushi on Michelle's blog, and my mouth immediately started watering.   One night when Dr. P and I was out, and trying to think of a place for dinner, I thought of Tommy's Sushi.  Dr. P's first reaction when he heard the name was "Tommy's Sushi?  Do they put chili on their sushi?"  haha....  We punched in the name on my navigation system, and it found the address for us.

The restaurant looked pretty old school from the outside.  There was no window for us to see how the inside was like.  The only way to peek inside the restaurant was through the heavy wooden door.

They had a lively sushi bar with a disco light.  We were seated in a red leather booth.  On the other side of the restaruants are some tatami booth.

Hot Sake ($5.50)

I spilled a whole glass of iced water as soon as the waitress brought it to our table BEFORE I even had any hot sake.  Dumb dumb me.  But our waitress was really nice about it, and I felt really bad.  Well, I just got a little too excited thinking about the poki bowl I was about to have.

Poki Bowl ($10.00)

There it was!  The Poki Bowl I've been drooling over for.  It had big pieces of tuna, yellowtail, octopus, cucumber, avocado, fish roe, and crab salad mixing with sushi rice.  We also requested the hot sauce.  It was VERY spicy, and it tasted like the same spicy sauce used in spicy tuna roll.  This poki bowl was insanely good.  I have to say this was the best poki bowl I've ever had.  It wasn't a big bowl, but very very fulfilling.  Absolutely love love love love it!

Yellowtail Sushi ($3.50) / Albacore Sushi ($3.25) / Spanish Mackerel Sushi ($3.75) / Spicy Tuna Roll ($5.50)

We ordered Yellowtail, albacore, and Spinach mackerel sushi, and a spicy tuna roll.  The fish quality was excellent.  Also they gave us huge pieces of fish.  If I really have to be picky, the only thing I didn't like was they gave us too little ponzu sauce.  But that's only because I love ponzu.  Actually without that excessive ponzu that I usually use, I could really taste the flavor of the fish.

Sea Urchin Sushi ($5.25)

Sea Urchin Sushi was mmmmmmmmmmm!  The sea urchin was so fresh and sweet.

Miso Soup ($1.50)

Miso Soup was great.  As we were eating, we started talking about how this place reminded us of Hide Sushi.  Even the miso soup tasted like Hide's.

Tanishi ($5.00)
Scallops, Shrimp, marinated in Special Sauce & grilled

Dr. P wanted to order Tanishi, but we had no idea what Tanishi is and just decided to try it.  It looked and tasted a lot like dynamite, but it didn't have that much mayonnaise in it.  It was really good, and filled with tons of mini shrimp, mini scallop, mushroom and onion.  This dish was so good to mix with rice.

Grilled Yellowtail Collar ($9.50)

Grilled Yellowtail Collar was on their daily special menu.  The collar was meaty, and the fish meat was soft and yummy.  We couldn't finish it because it was so big.  Leftover tasted just as good the next day.

I think we've found our Hide Sushi in OC.  We like Tommy's a lot!  The food was fresh and delicious, service was good, and the price is very reasonable in OC.  We will definitely have the Poki Bowl at Tommy's again and again and again and again....

  2. Looks like a great deal! It's funny that you spilled water- I spilled water at one particular restaurant every time I visited there! So weird!

    haha that's funny.
Try to be extra careful next time to see if you can break the curse "tradition".
