We always do a little fine dining on the second night of our trip.  Dr. Park found the Restaurant at Convict Lake and made reservation at 7pm for dinner.  We came 30 minutes early to walk around the lake.

Convict Lake is about 10 minutes drive from Mammoth Mountain.  It was named Convict Lake because a group of convicts escaped prisons back in 1871 and was captured here.  Now the area is famous for trout fishing and camping.  The lake is truly beautiful.  We hung out at the lake for a big, then headed over to the restaurant.

The restaurant is located next to Convict Lake Resort.  After we told the hostess our name and reservation time, she said, "You guys are not in a hurry, right?  Because I still have couple things I need to take care of.  So just have a seat there."  What the....?  So we patiently sat for 15 minutes before she seated us.  This was the only letdown of the night.

The restaurant is smaller than it looked from outside.  Our waiter was very polite and friendly.  He came over to chat with us a few times.  Very good service.

Half Bottle Pinot Noir, Husch, Anderson Valley, 2006 ($20.00)

We ordered half bottle of Pinot Noir to go with our meal.  The wine was good, but it was slightly warm when it was first brought to our table.  But I still like the wine.

Bread

Bread and butter.  But we didn't really use the butter because we kept on dipping our bread in.......

Mussel in Sherry Wine Sauce ($14.95)

This was the special appetizer of the night.  Mussel cooked with tomato, basil, garlic, Applewood bacon in sherry wine sauce.  The broth was so good that we couldn't stop eating our bread with it.

Beef Wellington ($36.95)

Dr. Park ordered the Beef Wellington.  Filet mignon and celeriac wild mushroom duxelle en croute with cognac truffle glace de veau.

The filet mignon was cooked perfectly medium.  It was super tender and juicy.  Just melt in your mouth kinda good.  There were some wild mushroom between the pastry and steak.  Man, it was so delicious.  The sauce was amazing, too.  I've never had Beef Wellington this good before.

Fresh Alpers Rainbow Trout ($27.95)

I figured if Convict Lake is famous for trout fishing, the restaurant must have the freshest trout.  I ordered the Fresh Alpers Rainbow Trout.  It was sauteed with scallions, oven dried tomatoes and toasted almonds in a chardonnay butter sauce.  This seafood dish was lighter than the steak, but equally delicious.  The trout tasted (and looked) a bit like salmon.  The crust and the sauce were both wonderful.

Our waiter told us that we ordered 2 oldest and the best dishes on the menu.  He said these two dishes have been on the menu since the restaurant first open some 20 years ago, and the recipes still remain the same!  We were just too full to have dessert.  I am sure their dessert would be great as well.

Who would've thought there was such fine food in a middle of nowhere  mountain?  We met a guy who sat next to our booth.  He is 60 and has been coming to Mammoth for 55 years!  Every summer he comes up here from Riverside to camp, fish and hunt.  We had really interesting conversation with him throughout our dinner.  He also commented on how great his chicken pasta dish was.

We just love this restaurant (except the hostess).  I would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone traveling to Mammoth.  It's just 10 minutes drive and the food is just amazing!
