Mt SAC Farm

School started two weeks ago. Going to school full time and working full time isn't easy to manage. Especially when I am taking 18 units 6 classes. Everyday I feel like there is not enough time. I only get 4 or 5 hours of sleep every night. Usually I go to school tired. But the strange thing is once the professors start lecturing, I am completely awake. I love all the classes I am taking and I love learning about animals. I actually look forward to going to school everyday. Thinking back to my college years when I was younger, I never liked going to school. What a big difference when you are actually learning something you are interested in!

So for the Animal Handling & Restraint class, we have to work with different animals to learn how to handle them correctly.  The first meeting of the class, the professor took us to walk around the farm.  Mt SAC has their own farm with tons of animals.  There are cattle, swine (pig), sheep, horse, llama, watusi and a greyhound rescue center.  We will have a chance to work with each animal this semester and I am so looking forward to it.

These are lambs.  When sheep is under 1 year old, it is called a lamb.  When you order lamb in restaurant, this is what you eat.... sheep baby.

I like food and I like meat.  But after walking around the farm, I can't help but feeling guilty about eating meat.  Especially after seeing all these cute little lamb, I don't know if I'll be able to order lamb in restaurant anymore.  I understand cattle, swine, lamb, chicken, turkey and even rabbit are raised in farms for meat production.  And I understand that is part of the agriculture system.  But it's still sad if I really think about it.  I wouldn't say I'll become a vegetarian, but I'll definately eat less meat from now on.

I am in the Registered Veterinarian Technician program at Mt. San Antonion College. The 6 classes I am taking are: Animal Science, Animal Nutrition, Animal Breeding, Animal Handling & Restraint, Veterinary Office Procedure and Exotic Animal Management. My goal at this moment is to focus on exotic animal and hopefully work in a zoo one day. I am going to try my best to finish the degree and get my state license in two years. I think it is a great program to prepare people a career in veterinary. If anyone is interested in the program, I would love to answer your questions.

  1. Hi Eileen
    Those lambs are cute.
I'll eat less meat too, don't want to eat lamb chop again... maybe I should eat poultry and seafood.

  3. oh wow I didn't know you went back to school as well. I'm also working and going to school at the same time. It is tough but it will be all worth it in the end, especially if you're learning something you enjoy. Good luck with your program!
