I had a $25 for Sunday Champagne Brunch for Two at Orange County Mining Co. Groupon. They open at 9:30am for brunch, and we made a reservation at 9:30am because we want to get a window seat for the view.

We got there right at 9:30am. There were already quite a few parties there ready to feast on Sunday morning.

There were speakers that gave mining sound effect. The building in the picture is the restaurant dining area.

The hostess asked us to wait to be seated in the lounge area. There's a huge bar in the lounge.

I like the rustic furniture, especially the wheel bench.

After a few minutes wait, a hostess with suspender pants brought us to a window seat. This was the view from the window. Nice!

Shrimp / King Crab Legs / Fruit

Sunday champagne brunch is $26.95/person, but if you arrive before 10am with a coupon, it's only $21.95/person. We immediately hit the buffet to get food. Dr. P's first plate had cocktail shrimp, king crab legs, and some fruit. He definitely knows how to get his money worth at buffet.

Omelet

I started at the omelet station. My omelet had all kinds of vegetable with a little bit of ham. It was delicious.

Salad / Ribs

I was just going to grab some salad to go with the omelet, but couldn't resist when I saw ribs. They serve big pieces of beef ribs here. It was tasty, but I prefer pork ribs more though.

Menudo / Corn Chowder

We were so excited when we saw menudo at the soup station. Their menudo was pretty stinky, but tasted good though. It reminded me of stinky tofu, how it smelt bad but taste good. The corn chowder was on the sweeter side, and I like it.

Orange Juice / Champagne / Coffee ($2.95)

Juices and champagne were included in the brunch price, but we had to pay extra for the coffee. Our waitress ALWAYS kept our champagne glasses full. I must had like 5 glasses. Too bad I had to work later that day, otherwise I probably would had more. haha...

After finishing omelet, salad, and ribs, it was time to get my money worth. I had two big plates of seafood. Love their king crab legs! Very fresh. We noticed all the Asian people were busy eating king crab legs, but none of the non-Asian people went for the crab. Only Asian people like crab?

Hot Food

A big plate of hot food for us to share. My favorite gotta be their chicken crepe. The salmon was really good, too. A lot of time I find buffet fish to be dry, but not their salmon. It was moist and soft. The Mexican dish of chicken with green sauce was really tasty, too. Pretty much everything was good.

Waffle / Smoked Salmon

The waffle was strawberry was divine. Can you tell how Dr. P and I have very different style when we go to buffet? I like to get a full plate, and he likes to get just one or two things on one plate. I like to get everything at one time, sit down, and enjoy the food. He likes to make multiple trips to the buffet and try just a few things at a time. How do you buffet?

Prime Ribs

Yummy prime ribs.

Pasta

We ordered our customized pasta at the pasta station. The garlic made the pasta sooooo good! Love it!

Dessert

Flan was the best! Love the strawberry with chocolate, although the chocolate from the chocolate fountain was a bit too watery.

Dr. P was happy.

It's not a big buffet, but we enjoyed everything they had to offer. I have a feeling we will be back very very soon!

  1. Last year my students have a Christmas party there.
    We book the whole store.
    Have a nice performance.

    That's really cool!
I would LOVE to have the whole restaurant all for myself, haha...

  2. I have a fair share of buffet dining and gotta say i notice the same thing about Asian and crab legs. My take is that the non-Asians don't care for "getting their money's worth" and simply eat what they feel like eating at the moment, like my Americanized husband.

As a girl who wears high heels at all times, too many little trips to the buffet stations are painful. So I get a big plate every time going out there.

Last time I went to buffet with Dr. P's family,
they told me their buffet rule is don't eat anything you can cook at home.
That actually makes sense, yeah? haha...

  3. I love seeing you guys go to buffets! haha! I'm just like you Eileen, I like to get a TON of different things on my plate to try everything. Dr. P has a lot of self restraint to just get one thing at a time lol. This place looks great! I think you made your money's worth! I agree, I think we were all taught by our parents as Asians to eat seafood at buffets. When I went to Hokkaido and ate the all you can eat sushi, my parents said "Don't eat the rice, just eat the fish" ha.

If I get fried rice or noodle at buffet, my parents also say "why are you eating the cheap stuff?"
hahahaha.... Now I always eat a lot of seafood not just because they'll get your money worth, but I just really like seafood.

  5. This was a very good deal! I have never used Groupon, but I saw a local TV news commercial saying that they would be reporting on Groupon and complaints from some people who claim that its not always such a good deal (but I didn't stay up to watch it). It seems like you have had many good experiences with Groupon, have you been pleased so far?

Yes, I've been happy with Groupon so far.
Most of the deals are about 50% off.
It's fun to use Groupon to try new restaurants.

  6. If a buffet is under $15 I like to fill my first plate with small samples of lots of items. When I really like something that I sampled I load up on it during my 2nd or 3rd trips. If the buffet is over $15, I try and eat mostly the high-priced items so that I get my money's worth.

I like eating all the seafood (and sushi if there's any) at buffet.
I miss the seafood buffet at Vegas!

  7. Hello,
I saw you, your husband and other friends visit this restaurant again on this Sunday. Our table was next to you.
    This world is so small....XD

    Hello Jared! How funny!
These people are actually Dr. P's family.
Sure is a small world. haha....
    Did you enjoy the brunch?
We thought the seafood was better last time we were there.
But the prime rib yesterday was awesome!

  9. Hi Eileen,

Long time lurker - I found your blog through KirkK's blog.

Did you know that the Orange County Mining Company has been operating since the '60's?

My family and my college friends and I loved to go up for there for the food and the view.

I am glad to hear that the restaurant is still serving good food and, of course, good view.

Ha, Ha, even in those days, regardless of reservations, the hostess always seated parties first in the bar so that they would order drinks, and the drinks have always been served in Mason canning jars.

    Cheers, Jan

Hello Jan! Seriously? The restaurant has been around for 40+ years?
I would love to go back to try their dinner and enjoy the night view someday.
Heard they have good happy hour also. I think I'm gonna start planning for:
drink during happy hour + dinner by the window + watch Disneyland firework with dessert!
    Sounds good, right? haha...

  10. Eileen,

Yes, seriously, 40+ years in business. And your plan for Happy Hour, Dinner by the window and Disneyland fireworks is an excellent one!

Hope we get to execute the plan soon. :-)

  11. Oh and P.S. If you do any shopping for your adorable puppies at PetSmart on Aliso Creek Rd., you might say hi to my daughter, Margot, who works there.

I go shopping there ALL THE TIME!
I'll definitely say hi to Margot when I see her!!
