Mother-in-law's favorite cuisines are Italian and Chinese.  For her birthday this year, I suggested that we take her to San Gabriel Valley to have an authentic banquet dinner for celebration.  Since she likes seafood a lot, we thought lobster and crab at Newport Seafood would be a good choice.  We tried to make a reservation for a Sunday dinner, but they don't take reservation on the weekend.  They told us if we want to be sure to get a table, be there before 5pm.

Boba Milk Tea / Jackfruit Smoothie with Boba

Dr. P and I got to the restaurant at 4:30pm, and got the 7 of us a table in one of the semi-private room.  While waiting for the other people to arrive, we ordered a boba milk tea and a jackfruit smoothie with boba.  I like the jackfruit smoothie, but their boba was not good at all.

Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 ($35.00)

Dr. P also ordered a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon for the celebration.  He said that Newport Seafood barely marked up the price for this wine.  We ordered the 10 course banquet dinner for $238.  Our waiter told us it would be too much food for 10 people, but we didn't mind to have leftover to take http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.

蟹王筍翅湯 Crab Meat Shark's Fin with Asparagus Soup

I saw Crab Meat Shark's Fin with Asparagus Soup on their regular menu for like $80!  This soup was really really good.  Actually I didn't think there were much shark's fin in the soup, and I didn't really care for the shark's fin.  I just love the lumps of crab meat, and white asparagus, and the flavor of the soup with a little bit of red vinegar added.  They put the leftover soup in boba container with the sealed lid for us.  So funny.

新港龍蝦 Newport Special Lobster

Ahhh.... the famous New port Special Lobster!  Our waiter told us that the lobster that came with the banquet was only 3 pounds, and it wouldn't look too good on a plate.  He suggested us to add one more pound for $15.  We did, and that was a smart choice.  EVERYBODY just loved the lobster.  Our table was really quiet for a while because everybody was just busy enjoying the delicious lobster.  We finished the entire plate!  Mother-in-law and auntie loved the sauteed green onion, garlic, and chili.

椒鹽雙蟹 Crab Baked with Salt and Pepper

Crab Baked with Salt and Pepper was really good.  Lots of meat, and the seasoning on the shell was delicious.  But we all liked the lobster just a little bit more than the crab.  We also finished the entire plate in no time.

楊州炒飯 Yang Chow Fried Rice

Yang Chow Fried Rice had shrimp, BBQ pork, and egg in it.  It was so good that I think I had 3 bowls of it.

北菇扒海參 Sea Cucumber with Black Mushroom

Another dish we all liked a lot was Sea Cucumber with Black Mushroom.  When I was young, I thought only old people like sea cucumber.  But recently I started liking sea cucumber a whole lot.  I wonder does that mean I am getting old?  haha....  Not only the sea cucumber, I also like all the vegetables in the dish a lot, especially the bamboo shoot and lettuce.  Sauteed lettuce was quite tasty.  Maybe I'll try that at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.

清蒸海上鮮 Steamed Whole Fish

I liked the sauce for the Steamed Whole Fish a lot.  The fish was very soft.  But it also had too much bones and was kinda hard to eat.

豆苗 Sauteed Peasprout

Dr. P's family had never had Peasprout before.  They all liked it a lot, and wanted to find out the name of this green veggie.  It was sauteed with some fried garlic.  Soooooo yummy!

香草大蜆 Clam with Spicy Hot Sauce

Clam with Spicy Hot Sauce had good flavor, but there was sand in the clam so Mother-in-law didn't like it.

宮保三鮮 Kong Pao Shrimp Chicken & Beef

Kong Pao Shrimp Chicken & Beef was just alright.  I thought it was a bit too salty.  I liked the shrimp, but didn't care too much for the beef and chicken.

京都肉排 Peking Style Pork Chop

Peking Style Pork Chop was also just a so-so dish.  The sauce was a bit too sweet.  Nobody really ate the meat dishes.  We all agreed seafood is their specialty.

We brought a cake, but were so stuffed so brought the whole cake back http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com, along with tons of leftover.

Like all Asian parents, Mother-in-law is picky about restaurants.  Just like my parents, she likes good food with good value.  Often we would hear from her that some restaurants have good food but too expensive, or some restaurants have good price but food not so good.  This is the first time she was completely happy with a restaurant.  In fact, she likes it so much that she wants Dr. P to celebrate his birthday in July back at Newport Seafood.  She even asked us why didn't we have our wedding at Newport Seafood because the food is so good.  haha....  We are really glad that she really enjoyed her birthday dinner.  Happy birthday, mom!

All the dishes are included in the banquet.
The only thing we added was an extra pound of lobster.
