[San Gabriel] [Chinese] 湖南酒家 Hunan Style Restaurant

Hunan Style Restaurant
湖南酒家

529 E Valley Blvd
San Gabriel, CA 91776

I went back to parents' house to have dinner with them.  Dad wanted to try the new Hunan Style Restaurant.  The owner used to own Hunan Restaurant (湖南小館), which was located at where Chung King Restaurant is right now.  Then they moved to Alhambra, but a fire destroyed the restaurant.  After that they opened a new place in Rosemead called Hunan Seafood (大湘園).  And now they just moved to this new location with a new name, Hunan Style Restaurant.  I don't know how my dad knew all that info, but that was what he told me.

We got there really early, maybe 5-ish.  The restaurant was empty.  But by 6, this place was completely full on a week night.  There are many hand written Chinese menus on the wall.  They were a little hard to read though.  I think those were special dishes that are not in the menu.

辣醃蘿蔔 Spicy Radish

We were treated a free plate of spicy radish to start the meal.  It might not look like it, but the radish was weeewowww spicy!  It was really good though.

小炒羊肉 Sauteed Lamb ($10.98)

Since mom doesn't eat spicy food, we actually ordered all the dishes non-spicy.  Sauteed Lamb was my favorite dish.  Tender lamb meat sauteed with cilantro and red bell pepper.  I just need this dish and a bowl of rice for a happy meal.

韭菜香干 Dried Bean Curd with Leek ($6.98)

Dried Bean Curd with Leek wasn't bad, but there was nothing too special about it.  But it's still a pretty good dish to enjoy with rice.

湖南臘肉炒蘿蔔乾 Hunan Style Preserved Meat with Dried Turnip ($9.98)

When dad ordered Hunan Style Preserved Meat with Dried Turnip, I wasn't too excited about it.  I never really like the dried and salty preserved meat.  But this dish was surprisingly good.  The preserved meat wasn't the dried and hard kind at all.  It tasted just like pork belly with smoky flavor.  If I wasn't eating with my parents, I probably would order some beer to drink with this dish.

酒家紅燒肉 Braised Pork with Brown Sauce ($8.98)

We've tried Briased Pork with Brown Sauce from Hunan Restaurant, Hunan Seafood Restaurant, and now Hunan Style Restaurant.  It was always consistently good.

綠豆薏仁湯 Green Bean and Barley Soup

At the end of the meal, our waitress brought us a big bowl of Green Bean and Barley Soup.  This was a Chinese style dessert soup.  It was supposed to be sweet, but Hunan Style didn't make it all that sweet, which we actually like better.  Perfect ending to wash down all that spicy food (assuming if we had spicy food like we were supposed to in a Hunan restaurant. haha...)

Even though we ordered everything non-spicy, we still all enjoyed the food a lot.  My dad loves spicy food.  But every time when we eat with mom, he would order everything non-spicy for her.  I thought that was so nice and loving of him.  Well, I'm really glad that Dr. P loves spicy food just as much as I do.  haha....  I hope to return here again soon.

    這家千味小廚我沒有印象耶.... Sorry!

  4. We had a dinner for about 10 people here late March and went to town. The triple cured meats pot was insanely good, as were most of the other smoked dishes. This is the Hunan cuisine's strong suit, the Hunan's Restaurant does it extremely well. That said, the prices are relatively high compared to Chili King across the street. They're really drawing in the crowd with the beer specials and the big banner right now.

I want to go back and try more of their smoked meat dishes.
Even though their price is higher, I like this place more than Chili King.
I thought Chili King uses too much spices and seasoning. The food is too heavy for my taste.

  5. My girlfriend is from Hengyang (Hunan Province), where the food is spicy and delicious! She is friends with the owners and took me last night. We got to sit with them and I enjoyed their company and the most delicious tofu ever! I also had a terrific, extremely spicy lamb with cilantro. I would recomend this place to anyone who loves spicy Chinese.

I love that lamb with cilantro dish!
