Chuan Yu Noodles Town
川渝麵莊
525 W Valley Blvd #B
Alhambra, CA 91803

Last time my parents and I went to Chuan Yu Noodles Town, we really enjoyed the food. My dad knows that Dr. P loves spicy Chinese food, and said he wanted to take Dr. P here to try. That morning, we went to the courthouse and officially got married. (I would LOVE to share some pictures, but we are still waiting for the photographer to give us the photo CDs.) For our celebration lunch, we decided to go to Chuan Yu. See, our idea of celebration is not about how fancy the restaurant is, but how good the food is. ^_^
四川泡菜/醬黃瓜/海帶 Sichuan Vegetables Pickles/Cucumber with Soy Sauce/Seaweed ($1.95)
For appetizer, we ordered the seaweed. The lady insisted on giving us a combo appetizer, so we gladly accepted. There were seaweed, cucumber, and pickled cabbage in the appetizer combo plate. Everything we good.
北川涼粉 Chongqing Spicy and Sour Stick ($3.50)
We had the Chongqing Spicy and Sour Stick last time, and absolutely loved it. So we ordered it again this time.
We mixed the "stick", which was made with mung beans, with the sauce. It looked good, but it tasted completely different than the one we had last time. There was something different with the sauce. Unfortunately, we didn't really like it this time.
We also ordered Pork Feet (香滷豬手) as an appetizer. The lady never brought it to our table. When we asked her about it later, she said that the pork feet was made a few days ago, and she didn't think it was fresh enough to serve anymore. I guess it was good that she was honest about that.
鴛鴦麵 Pea with Ground Pork Dry Noodle ($5.95)
We tried a bowl of noodle that we've never had before, Pea with Ground Pork Dry Noodle. The ground pork tasted sort of like spicy jajung noodle (炸醬麵). It was really good. Their noodle is very chewy and tasty. We all liked this noodle dish a lot.
We also had the wontons with hot sauce (紅油過橋炒手). The wontons were good, but the sauce tasted different again. Last time the sesame sauce was really good. This time it was too salty.
粉蒸肉 Steamed Pork Belly with Ground Sticky Rice ($6.95)
When we were ordering, the lady asked us if we wanted to order Steamed Pork Belly with Ground Sticky Rice. We told her that we tried it last time. It was good, but we wanted to try more new dishes this time. But then she brought a plate of the Steamed Pork Belly to our table. We told her that we didn't order it. She said that she thought we did. We told her again that we didn't order it though. Then she said, "but... it's already made", and just stood there looking at us. To end the awkward silence, my dad just said, "It's ok. We'll take it then." Hmmm, I didn't really like that. But I guess for a really small restaurant like this, they can't really afford to lose any money? Oh well, at least the Steamed Pork Belly was good.
回鍋肉 Twice Cooked Pork ($6.95)
Twice Cooked Pork was pretty good, although I think my dad makes a better one. The pork was pretty tender. I just wish that there would be more pork.
麻辣豆花魚片 Fish & Jellied Tofu in Sichuan Garlic & Chili Sauce ($7.95)
Fish & Jellied Tofu in Sichuan Garlic & Chili Sauce looked really spicy, but it actually wasn't. I liked the big pieces of soft fish. It was good with rice. The sauce was really soupy though. I am not an expert on Sichuan food, so I don't really know if the sauce was supposed to be this way. But I like the sauce to be just a little thicker to eat with rice.
The food wasn't bad, but just not as good as last time. We were a little disappointed. I still like their noodle a lot, more than the cooked dishes. I think in the future we'll just stick with ordering noodles from Chuan Yu.

Happy official wedding Eileen :) I've now read your blog through both of our weddings!
ReplyDeletehaha I know! Funny how we never met, but I've known you for so long already! ^____^
Congrats~ Eileen!
ReplyDeleteThank you, xinyi!
we tried this place after reading your blog here last time. I must say we were very disappointed. they also offered us the steam pork belly the same way they did to you. i'm pretty sure they pre-made them and tried to sell them to everyone. Very sneaky. Will never go back!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry for your experience.
They way they pushed the steamed pork belly was definitely a big turn-off.
Plus the dish always comes out first. I think you're right about pre-making the dish.
Congrats Eileen. Did a little post on the Alhambra Source. Let me know if you'd ever be interested in contributing to the site.
ReplyDelete--Daniela
Daniela, thank you so much for the article.
It brought a big smile to my face when I read "Eileen Likes to Eat gets hitched -- then eats spicy noodles on Valley".
hahahaha.... that's funny. I would love to contribute to your website.
You probably already knew that I live in Orange County now.
I don't dine in Alhambra as much as I used to, but occasionally we still go back there for some really good and authentic Chinese food.
My wedding banquet was held at Lunasia in Alhambra!
So wherever I go back there to eat, I'll let you know. ^_^
always drivw by this one, look normal, never though about it's a special one.
ReplyDeleteYup, it's just a hole in the wall kind of Chinese restaurant.
If my dad didn't take me there, I probably would never go, either.
Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteIt's been awhile I catch up your site.
