[San Gabriel] [Taiwanese] 趴趴走 Pa Pa Walk

Pa Pa Walk

227 W Valley Blvd
San Gabriel, CA, 91776
(626) 281-3889

I met up with the buyer of the Gibson guitar at Hilton Plaza.  I told my family I would get food for dinner.  Since I was already there in the plaza, I decided to go to Pa Pa Walk to try the spicy beef with noodle dish everyone recommended.

It was about 6:30pm on a Friday and the restaurant was busy.  I walked up to the counter.  A waitress was standing there.  She didn't smile and didn't greet me.  I told her I wanted to order for to go.  She still didn't say anothing, but just picked up her ordering pad and a pen.  She didn't even hand me a menu.  I had to pick up the menu myself.  Hmmm.... I didn't like that.

After ordering, I sat near the counter to wait for my food.  The beef noodle dish was brought out first.  The container was left on the counter.  Then different waitresses and waiter would walk by, and open it to see what was inside.  The weird thing was one waitress would do it everytime she came back to the counter, like she was afraid what was inside the box a minute ago would become something else a minute later.  That one box was opened for at least 15 times.  I was getting really annoyed seeing everybody kept on "checking" on my food.

The wait was long.  Maybe about 20 something minutes.  Finally when everything was ready, the waitress put the boxes inside a plastic bag.  Then she took everything out, and put it all in another identical plastic bag.  While doing so, she would open every box to check again.  I don't know.... does she have some kind of OCD?  Finally when everything was set, she handed the bag to me and said, "it's ready".  No "thank you", no smile.

Popcorn Chicken ($3.95)

So I wasn't too happy about their service, but was still hopeful about their food.  Ordered Popcorn Chicken for appetizer.  This dish was pretty good.  No complaint here.

Spicy Beef (Tendon) w/ Noodle (Dry) ($7.95)

Dad and I shared the spicy beef & tendon dry noodle.  Dad liked the beef and tendon, but thought the noodle was undercooked.  But I really like this dish.  I didn't think the noodle was undercooked.  Maybe older people like their noodle softer?  I like their hot sauce a lot.  It left my lips and tongue numb, but wanted some more of it.  The beef and tendon were flavorful and tender.  Even though it was great, I think the dish was way overpriced.

Eel Fried Rice ($7.25)

I saw Eel Fried Rice on the menu.  I pictured the dish to have chopped eel pieces in the fried rice.  But it turned out to be a simple fried rice with green onion and 4 tiny pieces of eel on top of the rice.  And they charged $7.25 for it?  What a ripoff!  And the fried rice wasn't even good.  There was nothing in it, and it lacked flavor as well.  My mom can make a much much better fried rice just using leftover at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.

Fried Pork Chop w/ Rice ($5.75)

I love pork chop rice.  I would try pork chop rice in every Taiwanese restaurant.  Not only was I disappointed in Pa Pa Walk's pork chop rice, my whole family was disappointed.  It was so dry and I didn't like they way they seasoned it, either.  I only had a bite and didn't want anymore of it.

Even though I liked the popcorn chicken and the beef noodle, I would never come back to this restaurant again.  The service was horrible.  The rice dishes were horrible.  This meal cost me almost $30.  It was way overpriced for Taiwanese food.  And it was definately not worth it.  I can't understand how their business was so good.  But sorry, no more Pa Pa Walk for me, ever.

  1. My oh my! When do Taiwanese deli dishes become this expensive??? You are right, the rice and noodle dishes are over-priced. I bet your dad can cook a pot of spicy beef and tendon to mix with noodle for less than $8.6(tax included)!

  3. I'm sorry you had a bad experience at Pa Pa Walk. Maybe you just happened to bump into a bad server that day. Whenever I go, I never had too much problem with their service. One of the owners is pretty cute and he's always very nice to his customers.

I would recommend their beef green noodle. It's superb. Their "coffin board" is pretty good too.

  4. Pa Pa Walk is not bad, but definitely not my favorite.

Eileen, have you been to Dai Ho in El Monte? I had the best Beef Noodle Soup there since Taiwan. Also, the Gan Ban Noodles was good as well. The main thing is the price, a bowl of Beef Noodle Soup was $9!
