I read about Porterhouse Bistro's prix fixe menu online.  4 courses and 2 drinks for $43.20 per person.  Sounds like a great deal.  When I mentioned it to Dr. Park, he was also very interested.  He had dinner there few years back and thought their steak was great.  We made a reservation on Saturday night at 7pm.  We arrived a few minutes earlier and was able to find metered parking spot on the side street.  Since it was after 6pm, we got to park for free and saved the $5 valet parking fee.

The restaurant is spacious and has a large dining area.  It seemed very empty for a Saturday night.  It was quite interesting that most of the customers were Asians.  Yes, us Asians love bargains.

Warm La Brea Bakery Baguette

The waiter made a few suggestions on their "famous" items.  And all these dishes were exactly what we wanted to order!  After ordering, he brought the first course to our table.  The baguette was from La Brea Bakery and was served warm.  Not too many restaurants would count bread as one course.  But perhaps it was the accompaniments that came with the bread made it as the first course.

House Tapenade, Whole Roasted Garlic flower, Balsamic Vinegar & Olive Oil and butter

4 different accompaniments were served with the bread.  The best one was the house tapenade.  The fragrant roasted garlic was addictive as well.  Tomato bruschetta was one of the items on the menu.  But we got balsamic vinegar and olive oil instead.  Maybe they were out of tomato?  But I would like the tomato bruschetta better.

House Chardonnay, 2004, Alice White, Australian ($6.00)

2 drinks were included with each meal.  Besides the regular soda, tea and coffee, the best part was that even wines are included in the deal.  You can order any house wine for free, or add $5 for other wines or cocktails.  We opted for a house chardonnay to accompany our appetizer dishes.  I have included the original price on the menu for reference.

Porterhouse Onion Soup ($8.00)

For our second course, Dr. Park ordered the Porterhouse Onion Soup.  It was served with puff pastry on top of the bowl.  I remember having soup like this in Taiwan all the time, but don't really see the puff pastry style soup too much in the U.S.

The Porterhouse onion soup was a different kind of onion soup.  It didn't have the cheese nor bread inside the soup like traditional French onion soup.  And it wasn't as salty, either.  The caramalized onion made the soup tasted with a hint of sweetness.  It was one of the best onion soup we've had.

Gorgonzola & Caramelized Onion Tart ($10.00)

I had Gorgonzola & Caramelized Onion Tart for my second course.  The tart was served on a bed of greens with sweet raspberry vinegarette.  The rich and strong flavor of the gorgonzola balanced so well with the sweet caramelized onion on the light puff tart.  We loved this appetizer as well.

House Marlot, 2006, Dogtail, California ($7.00) / House Cabernet, 2004, Tunnel of Elms, California ($5.00)

Two red wines to pair with our main course.  One house marlot and one house cabernet.  The marlot was smooth.  The cabernet had a more complex flavor.  It was a bit spicy, which Dr. Park liked.

26 oz Porterhouse Steak ($59.00)

Instead of ordering two entrees, we ordered the 26 oz Porterhouse Steak for 2.  This was their most popular steak.  What is a porterhouse steak?  It's a choice cut of beef from between the prime ribs and the sirloin, taken from the thick end of the short loin, having a T-bone and a sizable piece of tenderloin.  So it's pretty much New York steak plus filet mignon.  Two of us couldn't even finish this giant piece of steak.

We ordered it medium, and it was cooked perfectly.  The outer layer had a thin crust of seasoning (I think?) and the meat was so very juicy.  It was really tender and it just melt in your mouth.  Because the metal plate was piping hot, the steak continued to cook in it.  So the pieces that we ate later was more cooked, but still very good.

Steak Sauce

The house made steak sauce was optional.  I love the tangy steak sauce with my juicy steak, while Dr. Park enjoyed the original flavor of the beef.

Porterhouse Fries ($9.00)

We had choices of two sides.  The first one was Porterhouse Fries.  The seasoned crispy fat fries was so delicious.  We just couldn't stop eating it.

Sauteed Mushrooms ($9.00)

We both like mushrooms and ordered the Sauteed Mushrooms as our second side.  The mushroom was plump and juicy.  But the fries still won this round.

Coffee

Our last included drink was coffee.  Perfect with dessert.

Crispy Apple Tart ($8.00)

Dr. Park ordered the Crispy Apple Tart for dessert.  It was fruity and light.  It came with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.  There's something about apple pie and ice cream.  They just go so well togther.

Chocolate Lava Cake ($9.00)

My Chocolate Lava Cake also came with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.  There's also something about chocolate lava cake and ice cream.  They just go so well together, too.  Okok.  Maybe every dessert goes well with ice cream.  The warm chocolate cake had melted gooey chocolate in the center.  So yummy.

4 courses meal for 2 plus 4 drinks for under $100 in Beverly Hills?  Yes, there's great bargain even in Beverly Hills.

The meal was great, but there were also some misses.  Our waiter wasn't too attentative toward the end of the meal.  We waited for a long time for our dessert and couldn't even find him.  He apologized and offered us one more free drink.  We were so full (and I was too tipsy) and declined the offer.  Also we saw other tables were served complimentary cotton candy before their ordered dessert.  But we didn't get the cotton candy.  >_<

Overall, we like Porterhouse bistro.  The food was great.  The price was amazing.  They even offered a 20% discount on Sunday through Thursday night.  Strangely, it seemed like their business wasn't too well.  I think this restaurant is great either for a romantic date or a big group dinner.  Maybe for my birthday party next year?  ^^

  1. Hi Eileen,

Another great review. :) I remember going to Porterhouse Bistro a few years ago... I thought it was ~Ok. Good prices as well, and it sounds like the current $43.20 price is a great bargain. You might want to try The Steak House for the Grade A5 Wagyu Beef next time you're in the mood for beef (I have a review of it on my site if you're curious :).

    Welcome back (again)! :)

  6. It's funny that you went there. I made reservation there for my husband's birthday at the end of the month, with our kids too. Their kids' menu is good too :)
