[Rosemead] [Chinese] 大湘園 Hunan Seafood Restaurant

Hunan Seafood Restaurant

August 8th was Father's Day in Taiwan.  Since that was the date my dad was used to, we don't celebrate the US June Father's Day and still follow the Taiwanese holiday.  My brother had to work last weekend.  So we postponed the celebration to Monday.  My dad loves spicy food.  He picked Hunan Seafood for our father's day lunch.

Toss-Fried Mutton with Cilantro ($9.98)

It was dad's holiday, so we let him do all the ordering.  My family loves lamb (or mutton).  The toss-fried mutton with cilantro was really good, and spicy.  I like to mix it with my rice.

Stinky Tofu and Pork Ribs ($9.98)

We like the fried stinky tofu a lot.  The pork ribs had good flavor, but too much bone and very very little meat.  They also had a stinky tofu dish without the pork ribs for about $5.  I think I rather have that one.

Sauteed Bitter Melon ($5.98)

The sauteed bitter melon was on their lunch special menu.  The portion was much smaller.  This dish was only for my parents.  None of us kids like the bitter melon.  I did tried a bite, and it was so.... bitter.  Yuck!  My coworker told me, "when you start liking bitter melon, then you'll know you're old."  I think it's true because most older people I know all love bitter melon.

Black Ear Mushroom and Chicken Soup ($10.98)

The black ear mushroom and chicken soup came in a clay pot.

There were little pieces of chicken and lots of black ear mushroom in the soup.  The soup had a strong ginger flavor to it.  It was a pretty good soup.  But I thought it would come with a whole chicken.

Steamed Fish Head Casserole w/ Special Hot Pepper ($16.98)

Steamed fish head casserole was the highlight of the meal.  This is their most popular dish.  Every table had an order of this dish.  The giant fish head had lots of tender meat and some gooey stuff that my parents insist was very nutritious.  The hot pepper and the sauce was very tasty.  I really like this dish.  We finish the whole thing and there were only hot pepper and sauces left in the plate.  The waitress asked us if we would like to have the leftover for to go.  She said that lots of customers take the sauce http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com to cook tofu with it.  So we did too.  And yes, this sauce is great with tofu.

Great food, great lunch.  My dad was happy so we were happy, too.  Happy Father's Day, Dad!

  4. Hi Eileen,

Nice review. :) What did you think of the service? The last time I went, I found it horrendous (worse than most SGV places).

There weren't much service (just like those Chinese restaurants in SGV).
We had to wait for a long long long long time for the food.
