[Industry] [Chinese] Flaming Spice

Flaming Spice

My friends went to Flaming Spice for dinner and posted pictures of the food online.  I thought the photo of their hot pot looked so good.  I got the restaurant info from my friends, and took my parents to go try this new hot pot restaurant.

We went for lunch.  They had individual hot pot lunch special during lunch hour.  The all you can eat for $20/person option was also available.  Their buffet wasn't even ready when we got there.  So we opted for the lunch special hot pot.

荔枝冰沙 Lychee Slushy ($1.99)

All of their drinks are $2.  I ordered boba milk tea, but their boba wasn't ready.  So  I switched to Lychee Slushy.

小菜白飯 Appetizers & Rice

Lunch special hot pot came with a small plate of appetizers and rice.  The cold appetizers were egg roll, pork ear, cucumber, seaweed, beef, and fried mochi.  Nothing was bad, but nothing stood out.

啤酒鴨鍋底 Beer Duck Hot Pot ($10.99)

My dad ordered Beer Duck Hot Pot.  He asked for very very very little spicy, but it came out more like very spicy.  Also we thought this was a "hot pot" restaurant, meaning you get meat and vegetable that you can cook in the hot pot soup base.  The pot came out just like a pot of soup.  No hot stove on the table to cook anything.  So no slices of meat, no vegetable, nothing.... just a pot of soup "base".

There were maybe 3 or 4 small pieces of bony duck meat in the hot pot.  There were also some cabbage, tofu, and thick glass noodle.

My dad told the waitress his soup was too spicy.  She apologized and took the pot back to the kitchen, and brought another one back.  This time it was more like what my dad asked for, very little spicy.  Still, he wasn't very happy with the quality of the food.

水煮魚鍋底 Spicy Fish Hot Pot ($10.99)

I ordered Spicy Fish Hot Pot because the waitress recommended it and said this was their specialty.  I asked for medium spicy, and it was very spicy.  The soup base tasted exactly the same as my dad's beer duck one though.  The soup was very spicy, and I don't think it was meant to be eaten like a soup, but should be more for cooking meat and veggies.

There were a few pieces of fish with lots of bone in the soup.  I think they used tilapia.  It had too much bone, and was difficult to eat.

野山菌鍋底 Mushroom Hot Pot ($10.99)

My mom's Mushroom Hot Pot took a long time.  This pot had lots of mushroom, some tofu, spinach, and a few pieces of beef.  It tasted like a pot of soup that anyone could easily cook at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.

酒釀甜湯 Rice Ball Soup

A bowl of rice ball dessert soup after the meal.  The rice ball was tiny, more like boba, but not even in ball shape.  It looked like it was roll out to a string then cut into pieces.  This is a new restaurant that just opened, but the soup bowls were all chipped.  Maybe they bought second hand bowls?

柳橙 Orange

The orange was probably the best part of the meal.  It was very sweet.

We got 10% off because it was Chinese New Year.  But I really regret taking my parents there for our Chinese New Year day lunch.  I saw other people ordering AYCE option.  They got a big hot pot on the table with slices of meat and plates of vegetable.  I would say, avoid this restaurant if you can.  But if you absolutely have to go there, order the all you can eat option.  Lunch is HORRIBLE.  But their AYCE price is $20/person, and that's grand opening 20% off special.  So regular price would be like $25/person?  Very expensive for AYCE around that area.  This restaurant got 4 stars reviews on Yelp, but personally I would give it NO star for our terrible lunch experience.  Ok, maybe I'll give them 1 star because the waitstaff was nice and polite.

  1. Haha, the food certainly looks good though. (Isn't it funny how sometimes we take pictures of bad food and people then comment saying it looks so good?) The plate of appetizer and rice could pass for a lunch, but I don't like how they cheated on saying the soup was a "hot pot", they should have called it soup with rice instead.

I was fooled by the good pictures my friend took, too. haha...
