[Irvine] [Chinese] Chong Qing Mei Wei Szechwan Restaurant

Chong Qing Mei Wei Szechwan Restaurant

We wanted to eat Chinese food for Chinese new year's eve celebration.  The obvious choice was our favorite Chinese restaurant in Orange County, Chong Qing Mei Wei.

]

They were super busy that night.  We had to wait for a while for a table, but it was well worth it.  They redecorate the restaurant a little.  Now they have better comfy chairs, hanging lamp above every table, and rustic looking iron chandeliers.  I like it.

風味冷菜 Cold Appetizer ($5.50)

As usual, we started the meal with 3 items cold appetizer combo.  We got the spicy beef, spicy kidney, and potato.  Potato was a bit too salty that night.  The other two items were great.

水煮牛魚 Boiled Beef and Fish with Hot Sauce ($10.99)

Boiled Beef and Fish with Hot Sauce is always good.  Dr. P's favorite dish.

重慶扣肉 Sliced Pig Belly Steamed with Preserved Vegetable ($9.99)

Sliced Pig Belly Steamed with Preserved Vegetable was soooo good with rice.  The meat was flavorful and really tender, melt in your mouth kind of tender.

蒜炒A菜 Sauteed Vegetable with Garlic ($9.99)

I don't know the English name of this green vegetable.  It's a Taiwanese green leafy veggie was called "A" Vegetable.  It was simply sauteed with garlic.  Very tasty.

酸辣湯 Spicy and Sour Soup ($6.99)

Spicy and Sour Soup had huge portion.  I had two bowls and Dr. P had one, and it still looked like we haven't touched the soup.  Great value for $7.  Some restaurants charge $3.50 just for one small bowl of it.

We just love this restaurant.  Food is always good, and service is very friendly.

All guests get a red envelope after the meal.  Awww that was really nice and thoughtful.  I thought they probably just have chocolate or candy inside the red envelope, but they actually gave everyone money.  Even though it was just $1, it was the thought that counts.  We love this restaurant, and will continue going back!

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!!!! (It's year of the rabbit, my year!)

  1. Pretty cool that they give out actual money to the customers. Oh, and the markup on the veggie dish seems high.

Yeah, the vegetable is more expensive than other Chinese restaurants for some reason.

  2. I think it's called Taiwanese A-Lettuce.

    I told Dr. P it's called A vegetable.
He asked, "are there B vegetable and C vegetable in Taiwan?"
    haha....

  3. Eileen, a recent issue of The OC Weekly reviewed a new place called THE KICKIN' CRAB, 3611 S. Bristol St. Santa Ana (714) 754-8888 (about a block north of the So. Coast Plaza). They liked it and said that its as good as the Boiling Crab---but without the lines (as of now). I don't know about their prices, but shrimp was listed as $8.99 per pound. Maybe someday you & Dr P can review it!

Thank you for the info, Rich.
Now you mentioned it, we haven't had Boiling Crab for a long time.
We'll go try this new place soon!

  4. I checked Yelp and there are two locations for The KICKIN' CRAB, one in Garden Grove and the one in Santa Ana that the OC Weekly loved. The reviews on Yelp were a mix of people who thought BC was better (but some preferred Kickin Crab), but nearly everyone said that Kickin' Crab was terrific to go to because they aren't nearly as crowded as BC.

I think Dr. P's cousin told us about this place, too.
    Hope to try it soon!
