I spent a night at my parents' house.  Before coming back to OC, I wanted to get some pork chop rice for my family and also take one http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.  I miss Pork Chop Rice from QQ Cafe a lot.  When I went to QQ, I found out they had changed into a vegetarian restaurant.  They still sell pork chop rice and other Taiwanese dishes, but everything is now vegetarian.  I didn't recognize any workers nor the lady who appeared to be the owner behind the counter.  I guess QQ Cafe was sold.  I already had my mind set on pork chop rice with real pork chop, so I went around the corner to the plaza next to QQ to Won Won Kitchen.

排骨飯 Pork Chop Rice ($4.60)

Pork Chop Rice was pretty disappointing.  The pork chop was really thin, dry, and salty.  Oh and very oily, too.  My parents also thought the pork chop was horrible.  They kept on saying QQ Cafe was much much better, and this place can't even compare.  Besides the pork chop, I actually like everything else in the box.  The rice had meat sauce over it, and it was pretty good.  The sauteed cabbage was very tasty.  Soy braised egg and tofu were both good. And I like the dried radish (蘿蔔乾) that was over the rice.

雞排飯 Chicken Rice ($4.60)

I wanted to get Stewed Pork Rice (控肉飯) for my dad, but Won Won Kitchen doesn't have it.  What kind of Taiwanese restaurant doesn't have Stewed Pork Rice?  Oh well, so I got the chicken rice instead.  The chicken was much better than the pork chop.  It was very tender.  But again, it was too salty.  The rice dishes came with soup and tea jello just like QQ Cafe.  I like the tea jello.

甜不辣 Fish Cake ($4.25)

Dad requested to have Fish Cake.  I had a few pieces, and thought their sauce was pretty authentic and tasted good.  This still cannot compare to the ones I've had in Taiwan on the little stands on the side of the street though.

Won Won must be happy that the competition with QQ is gone now.  But we really didn't like their pork chop rice.  My parents told me never go back there to get pork chop rice again.  Also the waitress there was friendly, but I don't know... rude?  While I placed the order, my sister went to the restroom.  When I was paying, she came out.  The waitress said, "oh at least you came out from the restroom when she's paying.  A lot of people just hide in the restroom when the bill comes."  I think she was trying to make a joke to be funny, but I didn't like this joke.  So she thought my sister went to the restroom just to avoid paying the bill at first or what?  I don't know what she was really trying to say.  Anyway, it's time to find another restaurant with good pork chop rice.

  1. God!QQ was sold?! I was just thinking to go there this weekend, but changed our mind.

Now where do I go when I want to eat good pork chop rice? (sob sob)

My sister went to Old Country Cafe (老鄉親) in Alhambra a few weeks ago.
She said she likes their pork chop rice. I used to go to Old Country Cafe back when I was in college.
But that was 10 years ago. Haven't been back for a long time.
Now QQ is gone, I'm going to give Old Country Cafe a try soon.

  3. I think Won Won Kitchen is one of the best Taiwanese restaurants that I've been to in LA... The waitress probably just said a joke that's not funny; I believe she wasn't trying to offend. Been there many times and am quite sure that she's a good person.

Won Won Kitchen was much better before.
The pork chop used to be thick, juicy and flavorful.

I think even Shau May 小美 has better pork chop rice than Won Won.

  6. Won Won's owner was QQ's original owner. They sold it a couple years ago due to health issue. Then maybe a year later, the owner's daughter opened Won Won. The food in old QQ (original owner) was way better than this QQ.

Every time I write about QQ or Won Won, someone leaves a comment about the history of QQ and Won Won.
A lot of people had told me that they like Won Won more than QQ.
But personally I still like QQ more than Won Won.
Oh well, none of that matters anymore because there is no more QQ pork chop rice.

  7. 你可以試試 台北金園排骨 位於羅蘭崗鑽石廣場內.
    這家好像和西門町那家是同一家. 我覺的這家的排骨飯 真的是太好吃了 :)

    1380 S. Fullerton Rd. 106
    Rowland Heights 91748
    (626)810-5570

    這家我有吃過
    不過是很久很久以前
    當時吃是覺得還可以而已
    不過這麼多年沒吃是應該再試試看
    他們好像只有白天有賣排骨飯然後晚上是啤酒屋?

  8. Yea, I think they only sells it at lunch time.
    I also like 好年冬 排骨飯.

    每次去好年冬我都吃肉羹米粉
    不知道為什麼都沒有點排骨飯
    下次也要去試試看

  9. WonWon's main chef is in Taiwan now for vacation, that's why the taste has changed. My neighbor is a regular of WonWon, and she told me the chef will be back in a month or so, and things will go back to how good it was before. I will try back in a month to see if that happens.

    Thanks for the info, warren.
That probably explained why the pork chop rice wasn't as good as before.
I would give it another try in a month after knowing the regular chef will be back.
    Thanks again!

  12. QQ closed? OMG, I ate there every week last year when our office was down the street in Arcadia. Won Won is usually good and the lady there was always nice to me, but I haven't been back there since QQ closed.

Anyway, congrats on the big day coming up!

    Thank you, got-rice!

  13. yah! last time i went to qq by accident, just walked in w/o reading the signs. we thought they just remodeled or something...newayz...we ordered some food and some icy....the food was actually alright, albeit i didn't order the stuff w/ fake meat in it (i'm not really into that stuff). we tried the pumpkin rice sticks....not bad...though that seems to be a pretty easy dish since my dad makes it good too...the icy was a 2 on a scale of one to ten though. QQ make chinese shaved ice about 4 times better...very sad... now i'm stuck going to overpriced asian tea places for ice...=p

Yeah I know what you mean. I really miss the old QQ.
Now I live in Orange County. We don't have that many Taiwanese restaurants around.
And all of them are way overpriced, and the food is not as good.
I wish I know how to cook Taiwanese food at http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com.
Maybe it's time for me to learn how to make pork chop rice.

  14. QQ wasn't sold -- they just remodeled and revamped the menu so it's completely vegetarian now. The owners are the same, and the food is still pretty good and cheap (but alas without meat).

Oh I see. I thought it was sold because the waitresses and the lady behind the counter were all different people.
And I didn't see the previous owner (the funny guy) there, either.

  15. won won is the same owner who had Q Q before..
