[San Gabriel] [Chinese] 成都蜀風園 Shufeng Garden (CLOSED)

Shufeng Garden

San Gabriel, CA 91776

(CLOSED)

I came http://www.eileenlikestoeat.com to visit my parents.  Dad suggested that we go to Shufeng Garden for dinner.  He had lunch at the restaurant before and thought the food was good.  I also heard good things about their Rowland Heights restaurant.

泡菜 Spicy Pickled Cabbage

It was Tuesday night.  We were the only customers there for the whole night.  The meal started with complimentary spicy pickled cabbage.  I like the cabbage.  It was spicy and slightly sour.

荷葉粉蒸扣肉 Steamed Pork with Mixed Flour ($8.95)

My mom doesn't eat spicy food (except kimchi) so we ordered some non-spicy dishes for her.  Steamed Pork with Mixed Flour was made with pork belly with potatoes under the meat.  This dish was good with rice.  The pork was fatty, but very tasty.

蟹黃絲瓜 Luffa with Crab Roe

I usually like Luffa with Crab Roe a lot.  But this dish was horrible at Shufeng Garden.  Everything was drenched in oil.  The oil had a golden yellow color and tasted disgusting.  Luffa soaked up all the oil, and was barely edible.  Super gross!

五更腸旺 Braised Pork Intestines & Pig Blood

Braised Pork Intestines & Pig Blood had the right flavor, but there was barely any pork intestine nor pig blood in the pot.  This dish should just be called Brasied Tofu.  It was all tofu.

酸菜利魚砂鍋 Fish Soup Hot Pot

The Fish Soup Hot Pot had a whole fish in it.  There were also tofu, glass noodle, and pickled vegetables in the soup.  The soup wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either.  I thought there was nothing special about the soup.

Overall, it was quite disappointing.  I had high expectation, but left unsatisfied.  My dad still thinks this restaurant is good.  As for me, I probably won't come back again.

  1. I also heard about this place good and bad too. but looks like it's not even worthy to give it a try, thank god you tried it first, haha, thank you and sorry for the bad experienced, I really hate when got high expectation to a restaurant and the food sucks >_<

I thought Irvine's Szechuan restaurants are better than this place.
And there are plenty other good ones in San Gabriel Valley.

  2. I can vouch for the Rowland Heights restaurant as being quite good. Of course, I only tried the classics (Twice-Cooked Pork, Water-Boiled things, etc.), but it was quite good and maybe you can give the Rowland Heights branch a chance sometime as well.

I would still like to try the Rowland Heights location.
Even if the recipes are the same, different chefs will still cook food differently.

  3. eileen, i've tried this place before and i actually liked it. uhmm...maybe it was just luck. the braised pork intestines and blood dish sounds really appetizing. i love all that internal organs stuff...haha! well, i started to like them 6 months ago :) i will definitively order the entree next time i go. btw, the one in rowland heights is much better than the one in sg.

I gotta go try the Rowland Heights one soon.
