Most of the time when my parents go out to eat, they eat at Chinese restaurants.  So I like to take them to try different cuisine sometime.  I asked mom if she would like to try Boiling Crab or BJ's.  My mom said that shrimp has high cholesterol, and it's not healthy to eat too much of it.  So she picked fatty pizza at BJ's.  Hmmm.... so pizza is healthier than shrimp?  Strange concept.  haha....

BJ's Brewhouse Blonde ($4.95)
A light and refreshing pale beer in the style of a German Kolsch. Slightly malty with delicate hopping to balance. Well-conditioned for exceptional smoothness and drinkability.

My dad was very interested in their beer menu.  He picked BJ's Breshouse Blonde to try.  The beer was light and tasted crisp.  He loves it.  He started asking me what time does BJ's open, and what time do they close.  I think he's planning to come back to drink more beer.

Best Beginnings Appetizer Combo ($15.95)
This sharable platter is designed to delight all tastes. It features a generous assortment of four of BJ’s most popular appetizers: Spinach & Artichoke Dip, Mozzarella Sticks, Avocado Egg Rolls and Santa Fe Spring Rolls.

I couldn't decide which appetizer to get, so I ended up getting the Best Beginnings Appetizer Combo.  Spinach & Artichoke Dip was good.  Mom really liked the big chunks of artichoke in the dip.  Santa Fe Spring Rolls were crispy and slightly spicy.  Very tasty.

Dad liked the Mozzarella Sticks the best because of the marinara sauce.  He ended up dipping EVERYTHING in the marinara sauce, even the chips.  Mom's and my favorite was Avocado Egg Rolls.  It was deep fried lightly and had lots of creamy avocado in the center.  (P.S. I also love Cheesecake Factory's avocado egg rolls a lot!)  Mom said she would like it even more if it wasn't fried though.

BBQ Chicken Chopped Salad ($11.25)
Grilled breast of chicken with a colorful confetti of tomatoes, corn, green onions, black beans, jicama, cilantro, mozzarella cheese, BBQ sauce and iceberg lettuce, tossed with our special BBQ ranch dressing and topped with crunchy, sweet onion strings.

I picked BBQ Chicken Chopped Salad because I was thinking about Stonefire Grill's BBQ Salad.  My parents liked BJ's BBQ Chicken Chopped Salad a lot.  Everything tasted fresh.  The dressing was light, just the way my mom likes.  The only thing we didn't like was the fried onion strings.  It was soggy and very oily.  Mom said the salad was the best dish of the night.  Dad liked the salad, too.  But when he found out the salad cost $11.25, he wasn't happy that they charge that price just for some "vegetables".  Then he started talking about how American restaurant is always overpriced, and Chinese restaurants has better value.  But I know that's just how Asian parents are.  haha....  But he said he still enjoyed the salad.

Southwestern Deep Dish Pizza (Small) ($14.50)
Our chipotle tomato sauce with spicy blackened chicken, green chilies, cheddar cheese and diced tomatoes topped with fresh cilantro.

Southwestern Deep Dish Pizza sounded good on the menu, but it was just alright.  There weren't much flavor in my opinion.  And I didn't like the "diced tomatoes" described on the menu were actually canned tomatoes.  It was soggy and sour.  I like the deep dish pizza "bread".  It was oily, but so good.  I probably wouldn't order the Southwestern again.

BJ’s Famous Pizookie ($5.95)
You’re never too old to enjoy our freshly baked, hot out of the oven, rich and delicious cookie topped with two scoops of vanilla bean ice cream and served in its own deep dish.Your choice of Chocolate Chunk, White Chocolate Macadamia Nut, Peanut Butter or Oatmeal Raisin Walnut.

It's my parents' first time at BJ's.  Of course they gotta try BJ's Famous Pizookie!  We picked Oatmeal Raisin Walnut cookie to go with the vanilla bean ice cream.  The cookie was warm, soft and sweet.  Love the combination of cold + hot together.  Dad said he didn't want dessert, but he still had quite a few bites.  Mom kept on saying the cookie was too sweet, but she kept on eating.  So I know they both liked the dessert.  haha....

I'm really glad that my parents enjoyed dinner at BJ's.  They saw the lunch special menu, and said they may return to try lunch here soon.  I still like to take them to try Boiling Crab.  Maybe next week.  ^_^

  1. Your mother has the right knowledge as having excess shrimps will increase cholesterol level, which leads to heart diseases or heart attack. Especially for many elderly people, it is really bad to consume high cholesterol food.

I have not tried BJ's pizza, but I am sure it is definitely healthier than consuming pounds of shrimp, crawfish and beer for one meal.

Excessive anything is not healthy I supposed.
I know cholesterol is not good for elderly people.
Guess I'll have to eat as much Boiling Crab as I can when I'm still young. haha...

  3. Looks pretty good! I heard BJs doesn't have that great of food, but the appetizers look really yummy, and I've always wanted to try a Pizookie. Might go with the bf sometime! :)

Everything tasted good to me, except the pizza we ordered.
But I've had other pizza before and they were all good.
Their food is yummy but very fatty. But maybe that's why it's good. haha...

  4. oh wow! the appetizer combo looks soooooo good!! :) btw, your mom sounds just exactly like my mom. my mom's always like: "too salty, too spicy, not enough salt, too sweet, and blah blah blah"...but she keeps on eating the stuff!! ... but we still love them!! :)

That appetizer was really good, but probably has 4000 calories.
I know! Why are all Asian parents like that? hahahaha....
My mom likes to complains about food in restaurants, so I would say something like...
"Yeah, it's too oily/salty/sweet. Your cooking is much much better... tastes better and healthier."
Then she'll get all happy and stuff. ^_^

  5. Chinese restaurants are usually chipper because they don’t have employees working for them, they have slaves and they don’t enforce any sanitation, unlike large companies where they have all HACCP in place.

In general, I still think Chinese food have better value.
You get more variety, cheaper price, and larger portion.
